Her tone made Taliana wary. “Why’s that?”
“Because I want him back,” she answered, but her determined gaze had gone back to Sebastian. “So I suggest keeping out of the way.”
With one last artificial smile in Taliana’s direction, Blair swept out of the room as quickly as she had appeared.
Once the shock subsided a bit, Taliana turned to Sebastian, wondering what the hell had just happened. “Well, that was interesting.”
Sebastian swore under his breath, dropping his head into his hands. “I hate her so much.”
“Well, I’m not that fond of her either,” Taliana offered, still attempting to gather her thoughts. The only thing she could really think about was how possessive Blair seemed. “What happened between you two anyway? She clearly still thinks you belong with her, so whatever it was must not have been that bad.”
“That’s really none of your business, Stick Girl.”
True, it may not have been, but she couldn’t squash her curiosity. She had a feeling that if she wanted him to tell her, she was going to have to bargain with him.
“I’ll tell you why I hate Zak if you tell me why you hate Blair.”
Sebastian dropped his hands from his face, revealing his furrowed brow. Taliana could see the wheels turning as he contemplated her offer, trying to decide if telling her would benefit him at all.
“Fine,” he agreed a moment later, sitting up again. “You first.”
“You were right yesterday. Zak cheated on me.”
Sebastian’s eyebrows shot up. “Really?”
Taliana chuckled, feeling the bitterness well up again. “Yep. With my best friend.”
“Damn.” He glanced away momentarily before bringing his gaze back to hers. “The same thing happened to me.”
This time it was Taliana’s turn to be surprised. “Blair cheated on you with
Michael?” So maybe the rumors were true.
He shook his head. “No, not Michael. My brother.”
Taliana couldn’t help but cringe. “Ouch. That might be worse.”
“You’re telling me.”
A silence fell a moment later, and as much as Taliana didn’t want to admit it, she actually felt a little bad for Sebastian. It was clear the two of them were in the same boat with their exes. Still, this wasn’t something she would have wished on her bitterest of enemies, but said enemy hadn’t been able to escape it either.
Taliana glanced up when she saw Sebastian shift out of the corner of her eye, and after looking down at the costly Rolex on his wrist, he rose to his feet and moved toward the door.
“Where are you going?” Taliana asked, frowning as he put his hand on the knob.
“I didn’t get any coffee this morning and I need some. I doubt our monitor will be back anytime soon.” He opened the door and glanced back at Taliana. “You wanna come with?”
Though they’d just had a sort-of bonding moment, the idea of leaving this room with him didn’t seem so appealing. “Why would I go anywhere with? you?”
“Suit yourself,” he said, shrugging as he stepped out the door. “You can stay here alone for the next hour.”
As Sebastian disappeared around the corner, Taliana wondered if her knee-jerk reaction had been the right one. Of course, she didn’t want to spend more time with him than she absolutely had to, but getting out of there for some coffee did sound nice. Then again, having the monitor show up to find the both of them gone wasn’t so nice. Who knew what kind of punishment they’d be struck with if that happened?
Still, it only took another second for Taliana to make up her mind.
“Wait up!” she shouted, springing out of her seat and jogging after him.
Sebastian smirked when she finally caught up halfway down the hall. “That’s what I thought.”
“Keep the snarky comments to a low, asshole.”
They somehow managed to make it outside to his car without anyone spotting them, and Taliana climbed into the passenger’s seat. It wasn’t until they’d pulled out of the parking lot and were moving swiftly away from the school that Taliana noticed something strange.
She glanced to her left, taking in Sebastian’s relaxed appearance. He had one hand on the steering wheel while the other rested lazily on the gearshift. Usually when they were within ten feet of each other, he looked like his head might explode, but there wasn’t even a hint of animosity rolling off him now. Taliana hadn’t seen him this calm since the night of his birthday, which meant something was up.
“What are you planning?” she asked, suddenly suspicious.
Sebastian glanced at her, faint surprise etched on his features. “What?”
“Either you’ve lost your mind in the past five minutes or you’re up to something. I’m putting my money on the latter.” Taliana cocked her head to the side in question. “Why are you being so pleasant all of a sudden?”
The surprise faded as he turned his gaze back to the road, a faint smile playing around his lips. “It’s just occurred to me that we have a common enemy.” He stole a brief glance at her. “Why hate each other when we should be hating our cheating exes?”
Was he sure he wasn’t concussed? “Do you not get it? I hated you way before I hated Zak, even though what he did to me was ten times worse than what you did.”
“And that brings us back to the original question: why hate each other when we should be hating them?”
Taliana mulled it over for a moment, sort of seeing where he was coming from. “I mean, I guess…”
“You know I’m right, Stick Girl.”
Leave it to him to ruin the moment when they were actually getting along. “Reel in that ego before I have to do it for you, dickhead.”
Sebastian snorted and took a hard right, merging into a new traffic pattern. “You couldn’t do that even if you tried.”
“Want to bet?”
