“Exactly,” I laughed. “How was your night?”

She snorted, shaking her head.

“Well, my partner-Lila or whatever her name was-was pissy the whole time, saying we didn’t earn the claw. But if you didn’t do what you did, we’d be on that consequence list.”

A shiver ran down my spine at that word. Consequence.

On my way back to my room, I’d overheard what happened to those who failed. They were thrown back into the wilderness for a full week, Alone.

They weren’t allowed to get any supplies like before. Most of them will die if they aren’t strong enough. Our wolves are solely instinctual and can survive any condition in the wild. But that’s just it. They weren’t allowed to shift. And if they shifted, they would-

You get it.

Eva seemed to catch my/thoughts because she muttered, “Yeah. We got lucky.” “Did you run into anyone?”

“Yeah. W went to pee for one second, and a team attacked us.” She huffed.

“Did you get hurt?”

“No.” She snorted. “But, Lola-

“I thought it was Lila?” I interrupted.

“Whatever her name is.” Eva shrugged. “She almost made us lose the claw. She can’t fight for shit.”

I smirked. “Let me guess. You kicked their asses?”

“Obviously.” She wasn’t even modest about it. She and Max were definitely related. And Lily didn’t make another peep about your help for the rest of the night.”

Naughed at that, grateful that the tension was finally released from my body. We had survived.

I grabbed some clean clothes and headed for the shower, taking my time, trying to wash yesterday off me.

Trying to wash Nate off me.

But even after I scrubbed my skin raw, I could still feel him.

When I walked back into the room around 11 a.m., drying my hair, Emari had just stepped in.

She stood in the doorway, looking like absolute shit.

“Wow. You look like death,” Eva mumbled, causing me to snicker.

Emari squinted at me, her eyes barely slits, I had no idea why she had it out for me so much. She rarely spared Eva a glance whenever we were all in here, even when Eva made snarky remarks like that.

“I just finished using the shower. You should too,” I said, and I genuinely meant what I said.

But of course, she took it as an insult, along with everything else I’ve ever said.

“And how was your night with Nathaniel? Huh?” She tilted her head at me in a manner that seemed unnatural, folding her arms over her bloodied chest. “You had fun? I doubt you didn’t have as much fun as you would’ve wanted to right? I’m sure you tried and he said no.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

That bitch.

She leaned against the doorframe lazily, her smirk sharp.

“Oh, Jiselle. Did you really think you won? That he wanted you too?”

What the hell does she’mean by ‘too’?

“Piss off, Emari. You’re just mad Jiselle beat you in your own challenge,” Eva snapped.

Emari laughed. “Upset?” She tilted her head. “Why would I be upset when it landed me exactly where I wanted to be?”

A knot coiled in my stomach.

I forced myself to ask. “What are you talking about?”

Her smirk widened.

“Why do you think I didn’t sleep in here for three nights after the challenge?”

I froze.

“What the hell are you saying?” I demanded. I was done with her games. Emari grinned. “I was very cozy in a certain third-year’s private chambers.” My stomach turned.

Max? No.

No, he wouldn’t. He hated her. He wouldn’t-

But there was only one other third-year I knew she had her sights on. No.

No, it wasn’t possible. Maybe Max would but Nate wouldn’t… Would he?

Emari’s smirk grew, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes as she finally saw that my facade crumbled a bit.

“This. This is what I wanted. To see the look on your face when you realized.”

Realized what?

My throat went dry. “Emari-“

She leaned in slightly, voice mockingly soft. “That I slept with Nathaniel.”

Everything inside me shattered.

*Jiselle**

I didn’t know what it was.

I was stupid for reacting.

Stupid for giving Emari exactly what she wanted.

But before I even realized what I was doing, my feet were moving.

The corridors blurred around me as I stormed through the academy, my heart hammering against my ribs.

My hands shook, my breaths came short and sharp, and I felt like I was seconds away from bursting apart. Seconds from shifting.

I missed my wolf. I needed to let her out soon.

But I didn’t stop until I reached the cafeteria.

My twin was sitting there, thank the moon goddess.

Ethan was laughing at something, his head tilted back slightly as he nudged the person beside him-Nate.

They looked so normal. Like nothing had changed. Like my entire world hadn’t just shattered into a thousand irreparable pieces.

Ethan spotted me first, his laughter dying instantly as he stood and rushed toward me.

His arms wrapped around me, squeezing me tight.

“I knew you were okay, but-” He pulled back, his green eyes scanning me carefully.” Damn, Jizzy, I’m glad you’re alive.”

“Me too,” I told him with a half-smile.

“Every time I heard that bell chime, my chest would tighten until I felt that our bond was in place.”

“Same, Ethe. Same, tried to respond properly, tried to hold onto the warmth of my brother’s love, but all I could see was Nate.

I barely managed to press a quick kiss on Ethan’s cheek before pushing him away. Because Nathaniel was the reason I was here.

Nathaniel was the reason I felt like this.

He was still seated, one elbow propped on the table, watching me approach with calculated ease. His expression was blank, void of any emotion-but the tension in his shoulders, the way his fingers twitched on the table, he wasn’t as unaffected as he wanted to be.

Good.

I wanted him to feel this.

I stopped in front of him, ignoring the confused glances from the few people in the cafeteria. Most students were still either recovering from the assignment, resting, or being thrown back into the wild if they failed.

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

“You slept with Emari?”

Shock flickered across Nate’s face. There. There it was. But it was gone just as quickly, and he schooled his expression into something impassive.

He raised a single brow at me but didn’t deny it.

I scoffed. “I’m so stupid,” I muttered, my voice shaking with rage. “I should have listened to Ethan.”

“Listen to me about what?” Ethan asked from somewhere behind me. “What did he do,

Jiselle?”

I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t look at Ethan.

“What did you do to her?” Ethan asked again, this time, directed at Nate instead.

Nate’s expression didn’t change as he leaned back in his chair. “I didn’t do anything to her.”

I let out a humorless laugh.

“You’re right. You didn’t.” My hands trembled as I forced out the words. “This is who you are. This is what you do.”

I laughed again, shaking my head at myself. How could I have been so blind?

It wasn’t just about Emari. It was everything. It was the fact that he never wanted me. He was a playboy. He was known for being this kind of person.

And yet, it still hurt. Because in truth, he was my first.

And it had meant nothing to him,

“I don’t care who you sleep with, Nate,” I lied, my voice sharper than glass. “But she broke my rib. Do I really mean nothing to you?”

Amusement flickered in his eyes. He had the audacity to actually be amused.

“And if I remember correctly,” he said smoothly, “you left her with a headache that lasted three days.”

My vision flared red. “Don’t take her side!”

I felt someone step behind me, but I assumed it was Ethan.

Nate’s eyes flickered to them, then hardened as he leaned forward.

“So what if I did?” he growled, and the air left my lungs.

“Are you admitting that you did?”

The person behind me gripped my shoulders, steadying me.

“Yes.” Nate’s eyes darkened, his entire posture going rigid.
