With unwavering confidence, Caden responded, “Yes.”
Alicia was left dumbfounded.
She knew Caden could be unreasonable, but this latest statement surpassed all expectations. He had genuinely compared himself to a dog!
Exhaling deeply, she retorted, “I sympathize with your situation, but I’m not the one who can assist you. Perhaps you should consider contacting the authorities to look after you.”
Caden responded, “Then why not call them for the dog?”
“I am responsible for Cade. I’m his owner,” Alicia said, before shifting the tone of the conversation. She teased, “If you agree to be my pet, then, of course, I’ll look after you too. Is that what you want?”
Caden fell silent, letting the argument drop.
“I don’t have time to care for the dog. He can fend for himself. If he doesn’t make it, I’ll just get another.”
His voice was cold and detached. Alicia recognized that he was deliberately trying to provoke her.
She rolled her eyes in exasperation.
With the maid away for the holidays and no one else to turn to, she had reluctantly reached out to him.
“Alright, if you’re not willing to help, let’s leave it at that,” Alicia said briskly, ending the call.
Caden’s demeanor remained cold, void of warmth.
Their exchange hadn’t been overtly hostile, nor had it escalated into an argument.
Yet, there was something irksome about it, something that irritated him deeply.
Once again, Alicia had managed to provoke him profoundly.
After finishing his work for the day, Caden selected a robot and brought it home.
Once activated, this robot was not just programmed for household tasks. Feeding the dog was only one of its many functions.
It was also equipped with dual cameras, allowing it to surveil the entire apartment continuously.
Caden initiated a video call to Alicia.
After she accepted, the camera displayed Cade happily wagging his tail while eating.
Interestingly, the robot even engaged in light conversation with Alicia. She responded with a few casual remarks.
Caden was nearby, out of the camera’s view, so Alicia couldn’t see him.
He scoffed.
There she was, chatting with a robot, yet ignoring him as if he didn’t exist.
That evening, Alicia attended a charity event.
In the photographs circulating in the news, she looked absolutely stunning-poised and alluring. She stood out like a brilliantly blooming rose.
Captivated by her elegance, Caden found it hard to look away.
How could anyone be so effortlessly beautiful?
Frustrated, he flipped his phone face down, closed his eyes, and pinched the bridge of his nose.
The following afternoon, Alicia returned to Warrington. After several days on the road, her diet had been poor, and now her stomach was upset. She decided to cook something light for dinner. As she began preparing, her thoughts wandered to that stubborn man.
After a brief hesitation, she decided to call him.
Caden answered with clarity, “What’s up, busy philanthropist?”
His tone was light and teasing, which only fueled Alicia’s resentment.
“Have you had dinner?” she asked.
“No,” he replied.
“Would you like to come over for dinner?”
There was a pause before Caden responded, “Are you trying that old trick again, Alicia? Do you think I’m that easy to fool?”
Alicia didn’t respond right away.
Then she exhaled and said, “Suit yourself.”
She purchased fresh ribs and prepared rib soup.
Even after her meal, Caden hadn’t shown up.
She filled a bowl for Cade.
As Cade happily wagged his tail while eating, a smile spread across her face.
“You’re definitely cuter than Caden.”
No sooner had she spoken than she heard the sound of the door unlocking.
The man who had just entered, less adorable than any dog, stood in the doorway.
Caden was surprised. He hadn’t expected her to actually go home and cook. The aroma of the rib soup wafted toward him, igniting a pang of hunger.
He had brought dinner too-takeout from a fancy restaurant. It was visually appealing and aromatic, but it paled in comparison to the homemade rib soup Alicia had prepared.
Silence hung between them.
After washing his hands, Caden approached the dining table.
He noticed only an empty bowl sitting there.
It was clear he wasn’t expected to share the meal. His face fell as he opened his takeout and began eating alone.
Soon, Cade finished his meal as well.
Alicia collected her dishes and moved to wash them. From the corner of his eye, Caden watched her move around the kitchen.
The familiar setting softened his feelings for a moment. But then, he noticed Alicia dumping the remaining rib soup into the trash.
He frowned. “Did you make any for me?”
Alicia turned to face him.
With a steady gaze, she replied, “I did.”
Caden’s expression grew more severe. “Why didn’t you let me know?” he demanded.
“You didn’t ask,” she responded. “Besides, you already brought dinner. Why would you think about eating my soup?”
Caden remained silent.
The quiet stretched between them.
Alicia then took the leftovers outside to feed the neighborhood strays.
Caden was caught off guard by Alicia’s unexpected return. In the midst of undressing for a bath, the door swung open. His physique was fully exposed, the contours of his muscles undeniably alluring.
A flicker of amusement crossed Alicia’s face as their eyes briefly met before she quickly looked away.
She chided him, “You’re not alone here, you know. Show some decency.”
With a nonchalant shrug, Caden replied, “Who knew you’d come back?”
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Given Alicia’s usual quick exits, her lingering now felt unexpected.
She maintained her stoic expression, choosing to ignore him.
Caden, however, didn’t hesitate. He strode directly toward her. Alicia, usually so composed, found herself unsettled by his boldness. Her eyes darted away to avoid his gaze.
He stopped abruptly in front of her, letting the tension hang in the air for a moment. Then, with casual confidence, he brushed past her and secured the door. Alicia stood dumbfounded.
She understood his tactics. He was flaunting his naked body to provoke her-a typical move for Caden with his impudent charm.
Exasperated, yet intrigued, Alicia glanced at the robot, an idea beginning to form in her mind.
Turning back to Caden, her voice steady, she said, “How about we sleep together tonight?”
Caden, taken aback, questioned his hearing. Alicia-known for her fierceness rather than flirtation-proposing something like this was astonishing. Yet, Caden was always up for a challenge.
“Yes,” he answered, his voice bold. “Tonight’s first rendezvous will be in the master bedroom.”
Despite his outward playfulness, the idea set his pulse racing.
With effort, he reined in his rising anticipation and retreated to the bathroom.
Once the door clicked shut, Alicia wasted no time. She reactivated the robot and began modifying its code.
Ten minutes after his shower, Caden turned off the water.
