Alicia turned her face away and spoke in a cold tone. “It’s not necessary.”
Yolanda weakly lowered her head and said, “Caden, please set me down. You should clarify things with Ms. Bennett to avoid any misunderstanding.”
Caden put on a stern face. Noticing Alicia’s detached demeanor, he understood that trying to explain would be futile.
“I’ll take you to the hospital first,” he told Yolanda.
Caden walked briskly toward his car.
Yolanda sobbed, her voice trembling. “Do you think Ms. Bennett will hold me responsible? I’m sorry, Caden. I was incredibly selfish. I shouldn’t have brought you into this. I truly regret it…”
Caden started the car, his expression darkening. He focused on the road ahead, but thoughts of Alicia filled his mind.
She stood quietly, poised and graceful. However, her eyes reflected deep disappointment aimed at him.
A tightening sensation gripped his chest.
It was an emotion he had never experienced before.
When they arrived at the hospital, Yolanda seemed very understanding.
“Caden, you should go find Ms. Bennett. It’s late, and she shouldn’t be out alone,” she advised.
Caden turned to the doctor and said, “Please keep me informed about her condition at all times.”
Yolanda offered a faint smile.
“I’m fine, Caden. Don’t worry about me,” she assured him.
Once Caden left, her smile faded as she lay back down.
She turned to the doctor and said, “I bit my tongue. Can you treat the injury?”
Yolanda had been harsh enough with herself to cause a significant wound.
The doctor, recognizing her importance to Caden, didn’t dare neglect her care.
When no one was watching, Yolanda discreetly grabbed a bottle of pills from the treatment room. She swallowed two pills quickly.
Her body often reacted poorly to various medications, and taking them carelessly could lead to severe allergies or even death.
After swallowing the pills, she couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of what was about to happen.
Alicia sat by herself, remembering the look Yolanda had given her just after Caden walked away.
Yolanda once asked, “Isn’t your role to satisfy Caden?” At that time, Alicia didn’t believe it.
However, Caden’s behavior tonight made it clear that Yolanda was right.
The realization struck Alicia like a heavy blow. She felt disoriented, unsure of how she managed to leave.
Just then, a taxi pulled up beside her, and the driver inquired, “Ma’am, you’ve been standing here for a while. Do you need a ride?”
It was only then that she realized she was standing on the side of the road. She nodded, thanked him, and climbed into the car.
Caden’s call lit up her screen.
Alicia stared at his name, feeling a sting in her eyes but unable to cry.
It took two calls from him before she finally answered.
“Where are you?” Caden asked.
Alicia didn’t feel like responding. Instead, she asked, “Why are you calling?”
The hoarseness in her voice was impossible to miss, and Caden felt a sharp pang in his chest.
“I took Yolanda to Averibon for treatment. That’s all,” he explained.
Alicia’s heart tightened. The memory of seeing him with Yolanda hit her hard. She replied, “Then you should focus on her. I don’t need your concern.”
Caden’s breathing became heavier. He tried to rein in his frustration. “Alicia, stop playing games with me. I don’t have time to coddle you right now.”
Alicia let out a quiet, bitter laugh. She drew in a deep breath and ended the call, holding onto what little pride she had left for both of them.
The road was slick with ice, and the taxi crawled forward. The driver warned her, “Ma’am, hold on. This road is dangerous. Lots of accidents happen here.” Alicia nodded in response.
Moments later, a car beside them lost control and veered directly into their path.
A deafening crash echoed around them.
The taxi spun, skidded, and flipped over. Alicia’s vision darkened, and a loud ringing filled her ears.
Trapped in the cramped space, Alicia felt searing pain coursing through her body. She couldn’t tell exactly where the injuries were.
Sirens wailed around her, echoing in the night.
Her head throbbed, and dizziness overwhelmed her. After some passersby pulled her from the wreckage, she found herself sitting on the roadside. Her vision blurred, and her heart raced.
A voice called out, “Ma’am? Can you hear me?”
She barely managed to open her eyes, struggling to focus. It took what felt like forever before the man’s face came into view.
He waved his hand at her and asked, “Are you alright?”
Alicia nodded and lowered her gaze to assess her injuries. She felt so numb from the cold that she couldn’t tell if her limbs were still intact. Panic crept in as she wondered if she had lost an arm or leg.
The man beside her said, “Your calf is injured, but it doesn’t seem too bad. I’ve already contacted your emergency contact. He’s coming to get you.”
Alicia processed the words slowly, trying to make sense of them. “My emergency contact?”
“Yes, the person listed as your emergency contact.”
Alicia froze for a moment. The man was talking about Caden.
Before she could say anything, the man quickly added, “Take care. There are more people who need help, and I have to assist them.”
opens doors to wonder
Alicia nodded faintly, unsure of how to feel.
She didn’t want to face Caden, but the pounding in her head left her too weak to make the call herself. Without thinking, she wrapped her arms tightly around her body, trying to cover her bleeding calf.
All of a sudden, her phone buzzed.
She accepted the call, and Caden’s voice came through clearly. “How are you?”
Her voice was hoarse as she responded, “I’m fine. It’s just a minor injury.”
“I’ve already called the police. They’ll come to get you soon. Yolanda took the wrong medication, and her condition is critical. I need to return to the hospital now.”
Caden spoke, but Alicia said nothing in response. She didn’t even feel like speaking anymore.
Caden continued, “You understand how important Yolanda is, right? I can’t let anything happen to her.”
Alicia’s face went pale. She had no idea how important Yolanda was supposed to be. What she did know was that Caden made her feel sick in that moment.
Unable to hold back, she said, “Caden, just go and do whatever you want. Why call me just to make me feel worse?”
Caden remained quiet for a few moments. The tension between them through the phone felt like a spark waiting to set off an explosion.
His voice became deep and intimidating. “I don’t have the patience to calm anyone down. Couples waste time getting stuck in misunderstandings, but that’s not something I do. I’m telling you this now to prevent any unnecessary confusion.”
Alicia let out a bitter laugh. “You’re giving yourself too much credit. I’m not important enough to waste my time thinking otherwise.”
She rubbed her eyes, which had gone dry from the cold wind. She refused to let herself cry.
“That’s all I wanted to say. I won’t trouble you again.”
With that final thought, she deleted his number from her emergency contacts without hesitation.
She sat by the roadside for a long time before the police finally arrived.
After going to the hospital to have her wounds bandaged, she headed to the police station to give her statement. When Caden called later, she ignored every attempt he made.
That same night, she booked a ticket and flew back to Warrington.
Caden sat in the hospital, gripping his phone. His face showed nothing but frustration. He massaged his temples, trying to think.
When Alicia didn’t answer, he called Gerry instead. Due to his active nightlife, Gerry was still awake at this late hour.
“What is it, Caden?” he asked.
“Has Alicia tried to reach you?” Caden asked.
“Alicia? Isn’t she in Averibon?” Gerry replied. “Why would she call me?”
Caden narrowed his eyes. “What is she doing in Averibon?”
Gerry realized he had made a mistake and tried to change the subject. “Why are you looking for Alicia?”
Caden wanted to press further, but he understood this wasn’t the right moment. Alicia wasn’t answering his calls. It felt like she had disappeared completely.
