Gavin nodded gently. “Then what’s the real reason you’re saying no to me?”
Britney sighed, “It just feels too fast.”
That night at the Yates Manor, she’d just acted on a whim. But now, she’d calmed down.
Britney had just been betrayed by both her best friend and her boyfriend, and it was hard for her to jump into a new relationship so soon.
“Too fast?” Gavin repeated the word, rolling it over in his mouth. “Then, how long do you think would be right?”
Britney shook her head gently. She didn’t know. Honestly, she didn’t want to get into a new relationship right now. But Gavin really was a great guy.
Gavin said, “Then from this moment on, I’m going to pursue you until you finally say yes.”
Britney looked up in surprise. She opened her mouth to say something but hesitated. Seeing the determination on Gavin’s handsome late she knew her refusal wouldn’t work.
Gavin began to gather his documents and put them into his briefcase. He lifted his gaze at Britney and asked, “Do you like the red roses cent you?”
Britney bit her lip.
Gavin zipped up his briefcase and stood up. “If you don’t like them, I’ll bring you different flowers tomorrow.”
Britney really didn’t know what to say for a moment.
Gavin picked up his briefcase and started walking out. Britney quickly followed after him. Suddenly, Gavin came to a halt.
Britney bumped right into his broad back and couldn’t help but let out a soft cry.
Gavin turned around and saw Britney rubbing her slightly red nose. He lifted his hand, then let it fall.
“Are you free tonight? I know a great little private kitchen. I’d love to take you there,” he said.
Before Britney could answer, Gavin added, “You can turn me down if you want.”
“Tonight, I-” Britney stammered.
“But honestly, I hope you won’t,” Gavin said, cutting her off.
When Britney met Gavin’s deep eyes, the words of refusal that had reached her lips were swallowed back down. ww
She hedged, “I’m not sure if I’ll have to work overtime today. There’s a big tour group checking in, and if the front desk gets overwhelmed, I might have to help out.”
Gavin nodded. “Alright, I’ll come pick you up tonight.”
‘Didn’t I just say I might have to work late?’ she grumbled inwardly. ‘Why does he act like I’ve already agreed?’
But before Britney could protest, Gavin was already striding off with his briefcase.
Britney let out a sigh. She really did have her hands full today.
With a big tour group checking in, there was a mountain of work waiting for her.
But by mid-afternoon, she got word from the sales department that the tour group wasn’t coming after all.
Britney found it odd. Groups that booked this far in advance almost never cancelled. On the bright side, at least she could get off work on time.
As soon as she stepped out of the employee entrance, she spotted the Rolls-Royce parked at the intersection.
That was when Britney remembered that Gavin had said he wanted to have dinner with her this morning.
She was off work now. There really wasn’t any reason to turn him down. Honestly, Britney had to admit that she didn’t really want to refuse him.
Even though she hadn’t met Gavin that many times, she actually thought pretty well of him.
Britney grabbed her bag and walked over to the car. The driver had already hopped out and was holding the back door open for her.
“Ms. Watson, please get in. Mr. Yates has been waiting for you,” the driver said.
“Thank you,” Britney replied as she slid into the back seat.
The door closed behind her. The partition between the front and back seats rose up. Now the back seat was completely sealed off from the front, leaving her in a private, enclosed space.
The man beside her didn’t say a word, but his presence was impossible to ignore.
Britney turned her head just a little and caught sight of him in his tailored suit, his profile unfairly handsome, exuding the air of a successful urban professional.
Britney clutched her handbag a little tighter, feeling a bit self-conscious.
The silence between them was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
In the end, it was Gavin who finally spoke first. “It’s a bit of a drive from your hotel to the restaurant, about forty minutes,” he said.
Britney turned to look at him. “The tour group that was supposed to check in today canceled.”
Gavin nodded slightly. “I know.”
“You know?” Britney blinked in surprise.
Gavin replied, “I had them switch to one of the Yates family’s hotels.”
“You? Why?” Britney asked, wide-eyed.
Gavin said, “Didn’t you mention you might have to work overtime because of them?”
‘So that’s why they suddenly canceled,’ she thought, stunned. ‘I knew something was off.’
Britney asked again, “Why would they agree to switch hotels?” Usually, there was a penalty for that. Most of the time, the deposit would just be forfeited.
Gavin tapped his fingers on his knee. “I told them they could stay for free. Who’d say no to that?”
Britney was taken aback for a moment.
For a few seconds, Britney’s face was frozen in shock. Then she blurted out, “You’re disrupting the market.”
Gavin let out a soft, amused laugh.
Britney frowned at him. “What’s so funny?”
Gavin turned to look at her, his gaze lingering on her delicate face. In a low voice, he said, “I thought you’d be touched.”
Britney was speechless. ‘Touched?’ Britney thought. ‘All I feel is shock. Just pure shock. That tour group needs over a hundred rooms. And he’s letting them all stay for free? Does he think money grows on trees or something?’
Upon seeing the surprise still written all over her face, Gavin, almost without thinking, lifted his hand and gently stroked the top of her head. “Alright, just this once. Don’t expect it again.”
He sounded just like he was coaxing a child. Gavin quickly moved his hand away.
But to Britney, it felt as if the warmth of his palm still lingered on the top of her head. For some reason, her cheeks started to feel warm.
Britney turned away, gazing out the car window. The setting sun bathed everything in a rosy glow, while cars streamed by outside. The backseat had plenty of space.
With just the two of them in the back, it felt especially roomy.
As Britney stared out the window, she suddenly felt his knee brush against hers.
She was wearing a long, pale yellow dress paired with sheer stockings.
The instant Gavin’s suit-clad knee touched hers; it was like a jolt of electricity shot up her leg. Britney immediately pulled her knee away and turned to look at him.
Gavin, however, was still gazing out the window, as if nothing had happened. It was just an unintentional touch on his part.
‘Guess I was just imagining things,’ Britney told herself. She edged a little closer to the window. The rest of the ride passed in silence.
Half an hour later, the car pulled into the parking lot of an exclusive private kitchen restaurant. Gavin stepped out first, with Britney following close behind.
Wesley had reserved a table by the window. As soon as they walked in, they spotted two familiar figures.
“Cam?” Gavin called out. He was a bit surprised to run into Cameron and Bradley here. It was obvious the two of them were out on a date.
What a coincidence. They’d actually picked the same restaurant.
“Gavin?” Cameron blurted out, just as surprised.
Bradley looked over at Britney, who was standing behind Gavin, and pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses. “Gavin, you and your girl are here for dinner too?”
“Yeah.” Gavin nodded, “You two go ahead.”
Britney gave a slight nod to Bradley and Cameron, then followed Gavin to their own table.
Cameron smiled as she watched Britney from across the room. “It’s just as I expected.”
