Levi glanced at him. “Who was it?”
As soon as Levi asked, everyone turned to look at Gavin, curiosity written all over their faces.
Gavin slowly put down his fork and said, “It was from my future daughter-in-law.”
Levi was confused.
Jacqueline looked at Gavin in surprise. “You found a girlfriend that fast?”
Before Gavin could respond, Lance raised an eyebrow and said, “Gavin, you didn’t just pick up some random woman to keep Mom and Dad off your back, did you?”
Gavin shot Lance a look, then let his gaze linger on Amelia sitting beside him. Amelia instantly had a bad feeling and tightened her grip on her fork.
Sure enough, the next second, Gavin spoke up, “Lance, you and Amelia have been married for months now. Why isn’t she showing any signs of pregnancy? What’s the matter? Are you not man enough?”
Amelia was stunned for a moment. Her face flushed with embarrassment.
Lance stayed cool, slipping his arm around Amelia’s shoulders as he said lightly, “Gavin, I’m just saving your pride here. If I went ahead and had a kid while you’re still single, how would you save dignity?”
“Are you really just saving my pride, or is it that you just can’t do it?” Gavin stared him down.
Lance said, “Come on, Gavin. I’m still young. Do I look like I can’t do it?”
Gavin said, “Then prove it. Why not have a kid?”
Lance said, “I’m just worried others will laugh at you.”
Their banter was heating up.
Bradley adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and said, “Lance, maybe Gavin will have a kid before you do.”
Lance said, “I don’t care.”
Lance shot a meaningful look at Amelia, who was sitting right next to him. They were still enjoying their time alone together. There was no rush to have a kid.
The last thing Lance wanted was a little third wheel tagging along.
Jacqueline asked curiously, “Gavin, did you really find a girlfriend?”
Gavin replied, “Mom, I’m still waiting for her answer.”
Jacqueline wanted to ask more, but seeing how reserved Gavin was with his answers, she decided not to press further. The others didn’t ask either.
After dinner, Gavin went straight back to his room. He waited for Britney’s call all the way until 11:30 PM, but there was still no sign of his phone ringing.
“Did she forget?” Gavin muttered to himself.
Of course, Britney hadn’t forgotten. She’d been wrestling with her thoughts all night.
It wasn’t until almost midnight that she finally gathered the courage to call Gavin back.
Gavin picked up after three rings.
“Yeah?” His tone was icy.
Britney took a deep breath. “Hi, Gavin.” After calling his name, Britney fell silent, clearly at a loss for words.
Gavin listened to the nervousness in her breathing and got straight to the point. “Ms. Watson, what’s your answer?”
Her breathing grew heavier, and after a long, awkward pause, Britney finally said with guilt in her voice, “I’m sorry, Gavin. I can’t say yes.”
Even though he’d seen it coming, Gavin couldn’t help but frown at her answer. He pressed, “Why?”
Britney said, “Gavin, we’ve only met twice. We barely know each other. Getting married out of the blue like this. It’s just way too crazy.”
“Okay,” Gavin said flatly.
Britney was totally stunned.
Gavin said, “It’s late. You should get some rest.” And with that, he ended the call.
Britney stood there holding her phone, a little dazed. She couldn’t even tell what she was feeling right now.
‘Is it disappointment?’ she wondered. She really didn’t know.
The next day, Britney headed to work as usual. Her workday started at 9, but she usually showed up around 8:30.
She’d just wrapped up the morning meeting when the receptionist told her someone was looking for her.
Britney put on her professional smile and walked into the lobby, only to spot Gavin the moment she stepped in, standing there with a bouquet of roses in his arms.
The roses were breathtakingly beautiful, each petal lush and dewy with the freshness of morning, their sweet scent drifting through the air.
“Gavin?” Britney paused, surprised.
Gavin stood up and offered the bouquet of roses to Britney.
Britney’s smile stayed in place, but she was clearly at a loss. For a moment, she was caught in an awkward spot, not sure if she
With people coming and going in the lobby, Britney didn’t want to embarrass Gavin in front of everyone, Britney took the roses. Thank you” –
Gavin’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Mind if I steal you for a few minutes?”
Britney glanced down at the roses in her arms. “Give me a second.”
Gavin nodded. “Sure.”
Britney carried the roses over to the front desk.
“Ms. Watson, your boyfriend is so handsome,” the girl at the front desk said enviously.
Britney just smiled and didn’t explain, setting the flowers down. As usual, she led Gavin to the small conference room.
Britney thought to herself, ‘Even if Gavin came all the way to the hotel, I still have to say no to him.’
But before she could get the words out, Gavin beat her to it.
“My name is Gavin. My parents gave me this name because they hoped I’d live a bright and splendid life,” he explained.
“There are seven people in my family, my parents, my brother and his wife, my little sister, and her boyfriend. You’ve met everyone,” he continued.
Gavin pulled out his documents from his briefcase and laid them out in front of Britney one by one.
“I’m thirty-four years old. I started kindergarten at three, and graduated from Wholeford Business School with a master’s degree when I was twenty-four,” Gavin said, laying out his credentials.
“Right now, I’m the CEO of the Yates Group. As for salary, well, since it’s a family company, there’s really no such thing. Last year, our total revenue was over 30 billion dollars, and I basically have free rein over it all,” he continued.
“Gavin?” Britney’s jaw dropped a little more with every word he said, her face full of shock. She couldn’t help but interrupt him, “W-Why are you telling me all this?”
He had even brought his ID, diploma, and some company documents, laying them all out in front of her.
Britney found herself clenching her hands without even realizing it.
Gavin looked at her calmly. “Didn’t you say we didn’t know each other well enough? I’m laying everything out for you now. Ask me anything you want, and I won’t hold anything back.”
Britney could only stare at him, speechless. She’d just said that casually last night. No wonder he’d just said okay last night..
Gavin pushed a financial report toward Britney. This is our revenue from last year. Take a look.”
“No.” Britney hurriedly waved her hands.
‘Isn’t a company’s financial report supposed to be confidential? How could someone like me, an outsider, be allowed to see this?’ she thought, feeling uneasy.
Gavin looked straight into her beautiful eyes. “Ms. Watson, if we get married, you’d get a share of the profits, too.”
Britney was at a loss for words.
Gavin said casually, “By the way, I’ve never dated anyone before.”
Britney stared at him in surprise. ‘No relationship experience?’ she echoed in her mind. At his age, and with how outstanding he is he an dated anyone?’
“Is there anything else you want to know?” Gavin asked.
To Britney, it almost sounded like he was saying, ‘Is there anything left you can use to reject me?’ she thought to herself.
Gavin’s actions seemed perfectly polite, but there was an invisible, almost domineering edge to them. He locked his gaze on Britney, not taking his eyes off her for a second.
Britney felt the pressure mounting. She said quietly, “Gavin, I didn’t really mean what I said last night.”
