So, they sat down on the couch, planning to chat for a bit before heading to bed.
“Why are you still up?”
From the doorway came a man’s deep, slightly amused voice.
Camilla turned around, a smile spreading across her face. “Brad, what took you so long? It’s already midnight.”
Bradley was dressed in a black suit, his white shirt buttoned up perfectly-he looked every bit the serious, steady professional.
Gold-rimmed glasses rested on his nose, masking the clever, calculating look in his eyes.
Bradley set his briefcase down on the couch and said, “An extra busy day at the law firm, that is.”
After graduating from abroad, Bradley opened a law firm in Viremont. In just a few years, his firm had made quite a name for itself, so he barely had a free moment.
Bradley turned to Damian. “And you? What took you so long?”
Damian replied, “We went to Viremont for a big shot’s celebration banquet.”
“Viremont?”
Camilla nodded. “Yeah, Viremont. Brad, I heard you went to high school there, right?”
“Yeah.” Bradley nodded.
His high school was indeed in Viremont.
But after graduating, he went abroad and never made it back to Viremont.
“You two went together?” Bradley chuckled. “That must’ve been a pretty big deal-someone that influential, and they inved both of you to their celebration party?”
Damian turned on the TV, flipped through a couple of channels, and happened to catch a news segment about Cameron.
“That’s her. She’s the one who came up with the breakthrough treatment for leukemia,” Damian said, pointing the remote at the girl on the screen.
Bradley stared at the TV for a few seconds, a look of surprise on his face. “Wow, she’s that young? And a woman, too? She’s quite pretty
He quickly looked away and turned to Camilla. “Camilla, it’s really late. Go get some sleep.”
Camilla stood up. “You too, Brad. Don’t stay up too late.”
“Okay.” Bradley nodded.
“You’re back? Brad, you also came back just now?” Beth had guessed Camilla check. And sure enough, they were home.
“Mom, why are you still up?” Camilla walked over and linked her arm with us.
Beth replied, “How could I sleep when you weren’t…”
Damian would be back around this time, so she came downstairs to
Just then, they heard the TV announcer say, “Cameron Yates has developed a revolutionary treatment for leukernia…”
Beth immediately turned to look at Bradley.
Bradley didn’t seem to notice. He was looking down at his phone.
Without hesitation, Beth quickly walked over and turned off the TV.
She then smiled and said, “It’s really late. You should all go to bed.”
“Goodnight, Mom,” Camilla and Damian said in unison.
They both headed upstairs.
Bradley was about to get up too when Beth called out, “Brad.”
He looked up at her. “Mom, what is it?”
Beth looked at him with a smile. “You’ve been coming home late a lot lately. Is work at the law firm keeping you that busy?”
Bradley nodded. “Yeah, I’ve been swamped. What’s wrong, Mom?”
Beth looked at Bradley with concern. “You can’t keep working yourself to the borte. You need to take care of yourself, too.”
Bradley smiled and put his arm around her shoulders. “Mom, I’m doing just fine. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“There’s one more thing,” Beth said, looking at him intently.
“What is it?” Bradley asked.
Beth said, “Brad, you’re five years older than Camilla, and even she’s already settled down. Osborne is married and already has three kids. Don’t you think it’s about time you started dating, too?”
Bradley paused for a moment, caught off guard.
He shook his head. “Mom, I’m swamped with work. I don’t have time for dating.”
Beth said, “Work never really ends, you know. You’ll be turning twenty-seven in a few months; it’s about time you started thinking about settling down.”
Bradley shrugged and said, “Mom, even Reginald isn’t in a hurry, so why should I be?”
Beth was left speechless for a moment.
She sighed helplessly and said, “I’m not trying to force you to get married right now, you know. But can’t you at least get yourself a girlfriend? With all those girls at your firm, not a single one has caught your eye?”
Bradley just shook his head. “Nope.”
Beth fell silent again.
After a while, she sighed, “What, are you planning to stay single forever?”
Bradley couldn’t help but laugh. “Mom, come on, it’s not that dramatic. I just don’t feel like dating right now.”
Beth pressed, “So when do you actually want to start dating?”
Bradley shrugged and said, “When that person shows up, I guess.”
Her face grew serious. “That person?”
Bradley nodded. “Yeah. So far, I just haven’t met anyone who makes me want to be in a relationship.
“If she ever shows up, I might just get hitched on the spot.
“Mom, don’t be too surprised when that day comes,” he added playfully.
Beth chuckled at his words.
“Get hitched on the spot?’ she mused to herself
Beth couldn’t help but recall how Bradley had thrown caution to the wind a few years back.
In fact, he really might just go through with it.
But that was all in the past now.
Beth let out a sigh. “Brad, can’t you just lower the bar a little?”
Bradley shook his head. “Mom, it’s late. Go get some sleep, or you’ll end up with wrinkles.”
Beth gave a helpless smile. “You’re just trying to brush me off again.”
Bradley walked her back to her room, then finally returned to his own.
Standing under the shower, the hot water washed the exhaustion away.
Dating Brad thought to himself. “I really dons for that!
The next day, as soon as Bradley arrived at the firm, his phone rang.
“Hello, is this Mr. Bradley Saunders?” a man’s voice asked, sounding all business.
“Yes, this is he. May I ask who’s calling?” Bradley replied.
“Mr. Saunders, thank goodness. I finally got in touch with you. I’m with the property management at Noble Vista,” the man said.
Bradley asked, “Is there something you need from me?”
The man explained, “Mr. Saunders, the water pipe at your villa burst last night. We couldn’t reach you, so we had to break down your front door to get in and fix it. We’d like to talk to you about compensation.”
