Thomas added, “Cam, Eli can be pretty quiet. If you have time, come over to our place and hang out with him.”
Cameron said, “Didn’t you know? Elijah’s coming to work at my company for the summer.”
Thomas was stunned. He thought, ‘He’s going to work a summer job at a small pharma company when he could work at any of the hospitals we own?
But Thomas just said, “As long as he’s happy.”
Cameron smiled, thinking, ‘It seems Thomas, like Elijah, has a warm side under his cool exterior.
The office door swung open, and Thomas stepped out.
Elijah had been propping himself against the wall, waiting. The moment he saw his father, he straightened up. “How’d the meeting go, Dadri Elija asked.
Thomas gave his shoulder a pat. “Great. I’ve got other stuff to take care of. I gotta go.” With that, he walked away briskly
Elijah furrowed his brows, wondering, ‘Great? What does that mean?’
Cameron emerged from the office too.
“So, Cameron, how’d it go?” Elijah asked.
She nodded. “We made a deal. I’ll have our people handle the rest,”
Elijah looked at her, stunned. He thought, ‘It’s done? Just like that? It has been less than 30 minutes. How on earth did he convince Dad?”
He couldn’t help but ask, “Why did my dad agree to partner with you so quickly?”
Cameron smiled, “That’s my secret.”
Elijah grinned and didn’t push further, even though he was super curious.
Cameron said, “Elijah, I’m heading back to the company. Wanna come?”
“Can I?” he asked.
“Definitely! I couldn’t have landed this huge deal without you. I’ll buy you dinner tonight.”
Elijah smiled, “Sure thing.”
Cameron brought Elijah to the company. She showed him to the meeting room, then went straight to find David.
She told David all about the contract.
David’s eyes popped open. “A magic bullet for leukemia? Mr. Wallace, you’re joking, right?”
Cameron’s face was dead serious. “I’m not.”
“But Mr. Wallace,” David said, “there’s no way we can make a leukemia drug. Five years won’t cut it, not even fifty!”
That way, they’d just be working for the Moore family for nothing.
Cameron said, “Trust me, Mr. Tucker.”
David stared into her eyes. Her gaze was steady, almost reassuring. After a long pause, he nodded. “Okay, Mr. Wallace. I’m with you.”
Cameron was definitely more mature than her peers. Sometimes, even more so than him. And right now, he and Cameron were in the same boat. If one sank, the other would too. All he could do was to trust her.
Cameron smiled, “You’ll take over the rest from here.” She patted David’s shoulder.
David nodded firmly. “Yes, Mr. Wallace.”
Cameron gave Elijah a tour of the company, showing him around so he could get a sense of the layout.
Elijah smiled, “Cameron, this is really good. Looks like a proper setup.
She grinned. “I think so too.”
This was just the start. Things would only get better.
But Cameron had someone to thank-Samuel. For the 15 million dollars in startup capital she had gotten from him.
Cameron said, “About time for dinner. What do you feel like eating? My treat tonight-order anything you like.”
Elijah chuckled, “I’m not fussy. Whatever you choose is fine.”
They ended up at a chic restaurant.
After dinner, Cameron said she
Wa going back to Noble Vista.
Elijah was surprised. “You moved back?” That meant he could move back too.
Cameron nodded. “It’s more convenient here.”
Elijah said, “Then I’ll stay at Noble Vista tonight as well.”
“Good. We can go to the company together tomorrow.”
When Cameron got back to Noble Vista, she
Hawa delivery guy knocking on her door.
Puzzled, she asked, “Excuse me, who are you trying to reach?”
The delivery guy turned around. “Are you Mr. Wallace?”
Cameron Hodded. “Yeah, that’s me.”
He asked again to confirm, “What’s your phone number?”
She told him her phone number,
Satisfied the info matched, he handed her the bag. “Here’s your order, Mr. Wallace.”
Cameron was even more confused. “I didn’t order anything.”
The guy replied, “It’s from a Mr. Murphy.”
Cameron was confused. She wondered, ‘Mr. Murphy… Xander? He sent me food? How did he know I came back here?”
Before she could argue, he stuffed the bag into her hands. “Don’t forget to leave a good review, Mr. Wallace.” Then he hurried off-he had more deliveries to make.
Cameron looked down at the bag, then at the empty hallway, and went inside.
She placed the bag on the table, opened it, and saw the food Xander had ordered-a milkshake, a chocolate cake, and a fruit salad.
Cameron was stunned. Since when was Xander this good at picking things? This was exactly what she loved-how could she say no? But she didn’t touch it.
She took out her phone, took a photo, and messaged Xander: [You ordered this?]
Meanwhile, Xander was checking the delivery app. It showed “delivered.”
‘Does that mean the guy left it at her door?’ he wondered, about to call when a message popped up.
‘Cameron? Am I dreaming?’ he thought as he quickly switched to WhatsApp-yep, it was from her.
“Yes!” Xander jumped up, thrilled. Talk about a lucky break!
He’d ordered the food on a whim, knowing she wasn’t living at Noble Vista. But it was the only address he had. Never thought she’d actually be there. He was over the moon.
He fought to keep his excitement in check and messaged Cameron: [Yeah, I sent it. You like it?] It had taken Xander ages to research online what small gifts girls were more likely to accept.
Cameron replied: [20 dollars. I’ll transfer you the money.]
Xander: [It’s no big deal. Why pay me back? It’s my treat.]
Cameron: [Why would you treat me? What’s the catch?]
Xander was at a loss for words. He thought, ‘What’s the catch? Can’t she see I liked her?’
But Xander didn’t dare say it outright. What if she shot him down? How would he ever face her again?
After a pause, he wrote back: [Cameron, I’m sorry for coming on too strong before. This is just a small apology. Please take it.]
Cameron read the message, glanced at her phone, then at the milkshake, if it melted, it’d be gross
She quickly transferred 20 dollars to Xander, grabbed the milkshake, stuck in a straw, and took a sip
