“Mom loved this garden so much… This was her happy place,” he said in a low voice.
“We used to walk a lot in the garden together, after Lilly’s death. Mom was trying her best to comfort me. My poor mom.” his voice broke.
“I can’t ask you not to be sad, Mr. Patterson. But as I said, I am pretty sure that your mom wants you to stay happy. Don’t break her heart.” I said.
without saying anything, he stared at me.
“I am so glad that you are with me, Sarah…” then he said, holding my hand.
My whole body shivered. I wanted to release my hand, but I didn’t want to hurt his feelings as well.
“It is her own people made her leave this world so early, Sarah… She was too young to go,” he said, still holding my hand.
I couldn’t understand what he was talking about.
“She was young and healthy. They made her a heart patient, which eventually cost her life. But she loved them until her last breath. That’s how my mom was. She was too good for this world.”
“I can’t really understand what you are talking about, Mr.
Patterson.” I said confusedly.
“It is the fight between her brother and my dad, which made her a sick person, Sarah… She begged to both of them, but none of them were willing to listen.” his grip on my hand felt extremely tight. He was angry and disappointed.
“Especially her brother… He didn’t give an sh*t about my mom. He is so desperate for money and power. His unlimited greediness finally killed my mom.”
I felt so sorry for his mom. Her brother must be exactly like Shane. Who is willing to do anything for his own benefit, without thinking about his sister.
“Couldn’t you intervene and try to find a solution to this conflict?” I asked, sadly.
“I tried that’s how I lost my Lilly…” he said. His voice was filled with extreme anger. His grip got even tighter, and my hand started to ache. I think he realized that I was in pain, so he released my hand.
“What?” I asked with surprise. Didn’t he say his Lilly died with an accident?
“My uncle is the one who planned that accident to kill my little angel…” he said.
“What? But why?”
“So hard to believe right? But that’s just a normal thing in this world, Sarah… He did that because I tried to intervene in their fight. My mom begged him to keep me out of this. But he didn’t listen. He wanted to kill me. Unfortunately, it was my Lilly, who paid the price.”
“How could someone become that heartless?” I asked in a broken voice.
No need to tell that I was furious about his uncle. I couldn’t even believe how someone could do something like that to his own sister’s family. I don’t think even Shane can become that cruel.
“People can do a lot of things for power and money, Sarah… Someone so innocent like you can’t even understand them,” he said.
“Does he know that your mom passed away?” I asked.
“Yes… He came to the hospital. But he tried to get into a fight with my dad even there.” he said.
“What? That person is totally unbelievable.” I said, bitterly. Who can actually get into a fight when his own sister is in her death bed?
“It is not just him. His son and his wife are also the same. His wife played a major role in putting my mom mentally down. His son threatened me multiple times, even after Lilly’s death. I am not sure, Lilly’s accident was my uncle’s work, or is it his son, who did all these.” he said.
“My mom has begged all three of them to let us live alone. But they didn’t listen. They all are so cruel.”
“Couldn’t you get the support from Police or someone?” I asked.
“Police…” he said, laughing.
“Police, Courts, and everything is under their arms, Sarah… They can do anything they wish in this country.”
I don’t usually hate people. I can’t hate my parents, my brother, or anyone in the university, no matter how bad they treat me. But at that moment, I hate his uncle and his entire family, with my whole heart. Those people can’t be really human. I wish they all have to suffer for what they have done.
“You know who my uncle is?” he then asked.
“I really didn’t know anything about your dad either, Mr. Patterson. It is just today, I got to know that he is a politician. So how can I know about your uncle?” I said.
“Well… You know him quite well… Even if you don’t know my dad. At least you know his son…” he said.
“What? How I know about him?” I asked confusedly.
“What? How I know about him?” I asked confusedly. I really don’t know many people. Especially I don’t think I know people from their social class.
“Mr. Patterson…” I couldn’t even figure out where Luke’s voice raised. However, his voice made both me, and Mr. Patterson turned around.
“Luke!” Mr. Patterson said in an annoying voice.
“They insist that they need to meet you to discuss a few things,” Luke said.
“What? Didn’t you say I want a break.” Mr. Patterson asked.
“Well… Mr. Patterson, I tried my best. But certain things they asked, both me, and Charles are not capable of giving any suggestions. I think its better you talk to them.” Luke said.
“I thought you may able to handle at least that small matter.” Mr. Patterson said bitterly to Luke.
What is he talking about? It was not Luke’s duty to handle those matters. He was just trying to help. Mr. Patterson has no right to speak to Luke like this.
“It is your mom’s funeral, Mr. Patterson. They are asking about her preferences. How am I supposed to know them?” Luke asked. It was clear that he was trying his best to be polite.
Mr. Patterson just stared at Luke for a few seconds without saying anything.
“Okay, then let’s go,” he said finally.
All three of us walked back to the house. Asking us to wait in the visiting room, Mr. Patterson went to the office room.
“What are you thinking so deeply?” Luke asked. I was thinking about what Mr. Patterson told me. I just wish Luke got a little bit late to come. Then I could know who Mr. Patterson’s evil cousin brother is.
I really don’t know why I am getting a bad feeling about what Mr. Patterson told. For some reason, I feel like something terrible is going to happen really soon.
May be Luke knows something about this. After all, they all are from the same class.
