Cornell lifted his eyelids and said impatiently, “Who let you in?” Cornell’s eyes flashed with annoyance, apparently conveying his displeasure at Audrey’s appearance.

The urge to run away overwhelmed Audrey, but his feet wouldn’t move.

He clenched his hands tightly, still wanting to explain himself.

“Yesterday… I didn’t mean to ignore you. I witnessed Henley’s sudden fall and believed he was in grave danger. I panicked…”

Henley had sacrificed himself to save Audrey at that critical moment.

The scene weakened his knees, directing his attention to the critically injured Henley. His instincts prevented him from prioritizing Cornell at that moment.

In addition, Henley was still unconscious, demonstrating the severity of his case.

“I am deeply moved by the fact that you were willing to sacrifice yourself to save me…”

Cornell could no longer bear to listen. Moved? Was that it? He had nothing more to say? Yesterday, he had wheeled himself to Henley’s room, hoping to find some clue. But what did he find?

Audrey was taking care of Henley.

If he really cared about him, why didn’t he check on him in the evening? He could have, but he didn’t. Instead, she ignored him completely. Was she so oblivious, didn’t she realize he had feelings for her?

Pent-up frustration hardened Cornell’s expression, his gaze turning cold and distant.

“Are you done already?”

Audrey gaped. She remained frozen in place, stunned by his cold stare. Her heart ached so much. She wanted to speak, but the words wouldn’t come.

Cornell’s gaze strayed to the magazine in her hand.

“You should leave when you’re done.”

His cold words hit Audrey like a hammer, making the pain in his chest increase. Audrey held his breath, afraid he would end up crying if he didn’t.

A few seconds passed and she looked up at him, her voice trembling.

“Is that really what you want?”

Was he being sincere, did he really want him to leave?

Cornell didn’t answer anything, but squeezed the magazine tighter. His fingers paled from how tightly he gripped it.

His silence only made Audrey feel worse. He set the thermos down on the table and stared at it.

Just when Cornell thought Audrey was about to leave, unexpectedly, she leaned in and her lips met his softly. She lacked tactility, but she kissed him softly.

A few seconds passed and she pulled away.

“Well? What’s your answer now?”

Audrey’s voice wavered, betraying his uncertainty.

Taking such a bold step was unfamiliar to him, and his hand, resting on Cornell’s arm, was stiff with tension.

Cornell looked at Audrey with an indifferent expression.

“What difference does it make?”

Audrey had overcome his reservations to take this difficult step.

Unfazed by his nonchalant attitude, she felt the impulse to withdraw.

However, remembering his determination to save her, she hesitated.

Determined not to give in, she held his gaze firmly.

“If you really don’t want to see me, I won’t appear before you again.”

Audrey’s lips, delicate and soft, lingered near Cornell, exuding a subtle, sweet presence.

Cornell’s expression remained stoic, but his hand tensed involuntarily, a warmth spreading through him.

It was a simple Audrey kiss, unrefined and impractical, but it awakened in him a deep desire to conquer her at once.

Remembering the events of the previous night, Cornell felt a chill in his heart. Her words were cold and cutting.

“And your boyfriend?”

Audrey was momentarily taken aback, not knowing to whom he was referring.

After a brief pause, understanding lit up her face, but before she could clear it, she noticed a smirk play on his lips.

“Or perhaps you wish for both?”.

Audrey’s breath hitched and a tightness gripped his chest.

Was this how he saw her? Like a deflated balloon, his courage and determination quickly vanished.

The complexities of their relationship could not be unraveled with mere words.

Audrey regretted her rash decision and her spirits plummeted.

She lowered her gaze, defeated, and began to rise.

“Sorry for the inconvenience.”

But as she started to walk away, her wrist was gripped tightly.

Cornell held her hand tightly, eyes intense.

“Is it really that hard for you to make a decision?”

She was pushing him to the edge of reason-why was it so hard for him to make up his mind?

Even if she cheated on him, he could accept it. But she refused to even contemplate the idea of lying.

Her grip tightened, causing Audrey pain. Tears welled up in his eyes and, in a pained whisper, he said, “I just….”

Bang. The door to the room suddenly opened, creating an abrupt interruption in the already tense atmosphere.

Luciana entered with a young woman following her. The woman, with her long wavy hair cascading elegantly and her figure accentuated by an elegant suit, gave off an air of grace and beauty.

Luciana, who at first had not noticed Audrey, said excitedly to Cornell, “Cornell, guess who’s back?”

However, her joy faltered when her eyes fell on Audrey near Cornell’s bedside. Luciana sketched a forced smile.

“Oh, Audrey, have you come to see Cornell?”

Audrey, sensing the tension, quickly withdrew his hand and replied politely, “Yes.”

Their greetings were polite but tense, creating an awkward silence in the room.

Then, the young woman with Luciana broke the silence with a melodic voice.

“So, you’re Cornell’s ex-wife?”.

Audrey was momentarily taken aback, not expecting her identity to be known.

The woman stepped forward, introducing herself in an extroverted manner, “Hi, I’m Katie Glyn.”

Audrey returned the greeting, “Hi.”

Katie looked at Cornell lying on the bed and smiled graciously.

“Cornell and I grew up together.”

A shadow crossed Audrey’s face. She rarely interacted with Cornell’s friends and was unfamiliar with Katie.

Admiring Audrey’s beauty, Katie commented, “Cornell is very lucky.

He didn’t expect his ex-wife to be so captivating.”

Audrey responded with an awkward smile, “Thank you. You’re pretty stunning yourself.”

Katie’s bearing was refined and elegant, distinctly different from Cecilia’s affected grace.

Extending her hand, Katie said cordially, “Nice to meet you.”

When Audrey saw the bracelet on Katie’s wrist, his heart skipped a beat and his face lost color.

That bracelet was the same one she had given back to Luciana shortly before. It was a gift from Luciana when she hadn’t divorced Cornell.
