Alyssa felt a wave of emotions-bitterness mixed with a strange warmth. It was like finding a piece of candy in a pile of sand.
After ending that call with Rosie, Alyssa stared blankly into space as she sat in the car. She couldn’t pull herself out of those complex emotions that she was feeling.
Sean glanced at her through the rearview mirror from his driver’s seat. He noticed the tears in Alyssa’s eyes. “Ms. Alyssa, I’ll send you back to Heightsnew Villa,” he offered in a warm voice.
“No, I don’t want to go home,” Alyssa responded softly.
Concern crept into Sean’s voice. “You’re not thinking of going to KS Group, are you? You need to rest.”” ‘Let’s make a trip to Fifth Prison. Once Jeremy’s influence on her thoughts subsided, Alyssa gathered herself. The sadness that had weighed on her face disappeared, replaced by a fiery intensity in her gaze.
She added, “Do you remember the inmate Mr. Steven mentioned? I want to visit him. I’m starting to think this isn’t just a coincidence. I also want to meet that ruthless killer-Justin’s uncle. I’m starting to get curious about the Duttons.”
Sean came to a realization. Then, he asked, “Ms. Alyssa, what if there isn’t anything more to that prisoner, but that he’s just a normal prisoner? Would you still help him out?”
“I will.” Alyssa curled her lips upward into a bright smile. “I’ll just take it as doing a good deed.”
It was a weekday today, so traffic wasn’t particularly heavy. Sean and Alyssa arrived at the entrance to Fifth Prison soon enough.
“Ms. Alyssa, it’s cold outside and you are not yet fully recovered. Just wait in the car while I go in to inquire on your behalf. I’ll leave the heater on in the car,” Sean suggested as he unbuckled his seatbelt.
“No, it’s alright. I’ll go with you.”
Alyssa opened her eyes; she looked a little weary. She had just moved from her seat when she caught sight of a black car heading toward the prison from a short distance away.
Her Spirit of Ecstasy Rolls-Royce was too showy, so Alyssa intentionally decided to swap it out for a regular, low- profile car before coming over.
She watched as the black car stopped outside the gate to the prison. Through her car’s front windshield, Alyssa could see a rather familiar-looking outline of a woman, albeit vaguely.
With a firm look in her eyes, Alyssa lifted her hand suddenly and pressed down on Sean’s shoulder from behind.
“Wait.”
Sean was taken aback. He didn’t dare to make any rash moves.
Right at this moment, the door of the black vehicle was opened. Sheryl, wearing a white lab coat, stepped out of the car with a frown etched on her face.
Dressed lightly for the weather, she stomped her feet to shake off the cold, crossing her arms in front of her chest in a poised manner as she shivered slightly.
Sean exclaimed in shock, “Ms. Alyssa, that’s Justin’s doctor!”
“I see her too.” With a steady look in her eyes, Alyssa stared fixedly at Sheryl as she hurried through the prison gates under a prison officer’s guide.
Even though Sheryl assumed no one had noticed, she had exposed her unnatural mannerisms; it was as clear as day.
Alyssa was overwhelmed with the same feeling of familiarity as before.
Sean frowned. “That’s strange. What’s that woman doing here?”
‘She’s like…”
‘Ms. Alyssa, what did you say?”
A sharp gleam flashed across Alyssa’s face. “That woman reminds me of someone I knew. Other than her looks, her every move looks extremely similar.”
Sean pressed on, “Who is it?”
“Liana Gardner.”
Liana’s name was one that Sean hadn’t heard in a really long time. At first, he was caught by surprise, stunned into silence.
After a while, his eyes widened, and a surge of resentment welled up in his chest. He had to take a few deep breaths before he could calm himself down enough to say, “Ms. Alyssa, don’t mention her name. It feels like a curse! When I think about all the pain she caused you, I-‘
“Those are stories of old. Forget it. Let’s just focus on the now. Sheryl always reminds me of Liana.”
It sounded almost absurd to say that aloud.
Liana had been Jeremy’s childhood friend, growing up alongside him. But, of all people in the world, Alyssa was the one who knew Liana best.
When Newton matched her with Jeremy, Alyssa secretly tried to emulate Liana in subtle ways, hoping to please him. She mimicked Liana’s style, soft voice, and mannerisms.
Over those three years, Alyssa had humbled herself, compromising and living in misery. She lost herself in her feelings for Jeremy, becoming someone she wasn’t.
But that was over now. She had found herself again and vowed never to lose sight of who she truly was again. Sean was shocked. “Unless… Are you suspecting that Sheryl and Liana are connected?”
“Even though I hate to think so, their behavior and speech are extremely similar. The only differences are their voices and their looks.
“The easiest thing to change is one’s appearance. It is their habits, on the other hand, that are difficult to change once they are embedded deep into their core.”
Sean nodded in full agreement.
Alyssa’s imagination was always vivid. Once she began suspecting something, her mind would race with possibilities. If there was even a hint of the truth, she would relentlessly dig until she uncovered it.
It was only a matter of time.
Alyssa’s suspicions started to take root at that very moment. Thoughts and possibilities rushed to her mind, but they were disjointed fragments she couldn’t yet assemble into a coherent whole.
“The Gardners went bankrupt back then, and Liana’s reputation was completely tarnished during her engagement ceremony. She had subsequently fled to Mosgravia, and interestingly, Sheryl had returned from Mosgravia.
Sean knitted his brows together as he pondered over Alyssa’s words. “But Ms. Alyssa, there are countless people who share similar traits. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be doppelg?ngers in this world, would there?”
Alyssa smiled faintly, her eyes cold. “That’s true, but two people with such uncanny similarities have appeared in my life. And, what’s more, they’ve both been my adversaries. Now that’s suspicious, don’t you think?”
Sean fell silent, realizing she had a point.
‘Ever heard of those TV shows where a woman returns for revenge after undergoing plastic surgery? Sometimes real life is even more dramatic than the stories we see on screen.
Alyssa’s own life had often felt like a thrilling drama, full of unexpected twists and dangers.
Sean gulped. ‘Ms. Alyssa, if… And, this is a big if… If Sheryl is Liana, how did such a dumb woman become a doctor? And how did she end up with Justin? How are they connected?”
The look in Alyssa’s eyes went dull. “Is this not the case?”
The car fell into a heavy silence.
They were connected. Both Justin and Liana were connected to Jeremy. Other than that, Liana harbored a deep- seated hatred toward Alyssa.
Even Jameson ended up working for Justin. So, why couldn’t Justin have found Liana while she was lost in the world?
*Sean, these are just our speculations. We need to have convincing evidence to support our theories. So, we must not do anything that alerts them until then.’
Alyssa’s gaze hardened. “But it doesn’t matter whether she is Sheryl or Liana. If she causes harm to Jeremy or anyone close to me, I won’t hesitate to make her pay.”
Sean nodded seriously. “Ms. Alyssa, wait in the car. I’ll go inside and take a look.”
“Wait. Stay here for now.”
Alyssa shook her head. “Sheryl knows who you are. Trouble will ensue if she sees you. Let’s wait and see for now.”
After Sheryl entered the prison, the prison warden attended to her personally by leading her to the area where mentally sick prisoners were being held.
“I have isolated him. He hasn’t been behaving himself the past few days. He even dashed out to Mr. Lynch to say that he needed legal assistance.
“He’s quite severely ill, don’t you think so?” The prison warden winked, as if he were trying to take credit for all that.
“That’s normal for a mentally ill patient.”
Sheryl stopped in her tracks at the door to a prison cell. She curled her lips upward coldly as she listened to the wails coming from the man within.
She pulled out a bank card from her lab coat pocket and handed it to the prison warden. “Thanks for your help lately. This is for you.”
The warden accepted the card from her excitedly, expressed his utmost thanks, and then walked away.
With a grim expression on her face, Sheryl pushed the door open and entered.
The cement walls were gray. A man struggled frantically as two medical personnel pinned him down to the dirty bed in the corner. His hysterical howls were so loud that Sheryl had to cover her ears.
A moment after he was forcefully administered a shot of sedative, he quietened down.
