‘Remy, if you want to come against me or to take my life, we can have a face-off in the future. I will certainly not shy away from it. But, right now, let me go to her.”

Jeremy’s eyes welled up with tears as he pleaded; a lump rose in his throat. “Please, I beg you.”

A moment later, he realized that the person behind him was remaining silent. As such, he picked up his pace. Suddenly, Remy called out to him. “Jeremy.”

Jeremy knitted his brows together tightly and turned around. The snowy winds billowed as their eyes met.

Remy swung his arm and hurled a black object toward Jeremy.

Jeremy lifted his left hand and caught the object in his hand. He opened his palm and was stunned.

He couldn’t believe that he had Remy’s car keys in his hand.

‘You are indeed mad. You are quite a lunatic,” Remy scoffed.

He turned around coolly and strutted away. “Remember what you just said. I’ll take you up on that challenge next time.”

Jeremy curled his fingers around the car key as he watched Remy move farther away. As he spaced out, he mumbled, “Damien…”

With Remy’s car, Jeremy arrived at the foot of Crater Mountain in less than 20 minutes.

At this moment, Elias was leading a team of forest rescue team members to head up the mountain to rescue Alyssa. He bumped into Jeremy coincidentally.

“Mr. Walsh?”

With the illumination from the searchlight, Elias studied Jeremy’s face, which looked even whiter than snow. In utter shock, he exclaimed, “W-What took you so long? What happened to you? Are you hurt?”

Jeremy had used slush to wash the blood and dirt off his hands and his face. Even so, he still looked to be in terrible shape.

Even though the freezing temperatures could slow down the aggravation of the wound on his right shoulder, he was still being tormented by that excruciating pain every second.

“I’m fine. Where’s Alyssa? Have you heard from her?” he blurted.

‘I haven’t! Her secretary contacted me. He’s on his way here as we speak. I’ll first take the rescue team up the mountain to search for her.

“Ms. Alyssa has experience hiking outdoors, so she’s capable of avoiding danger. I hope that she’ll be able to hang in there.”

Although that was what Elias uttered verbally, he was still extremely worried.

He continued, “It’s just that we’ve got such adverse weather tonight. If, in any case, she missteps, she might fall down a cliff and be buried in the snow. It would be terrible if that happened!”

Upon hearing that, Jeremy was frightened deep down. His entire body went cold. “I’ll go up the mountain with the rest of you!”

“Mr. Walsh, what in the world happened to you and Ms. Alyssa? Did you both break up? Or did you have a fight?” Elias let out a sigh. He gave Jeremy a slightly resentful glare. “I know that this is a private matter between the both of you, and it’s not for me as an outsider to comment. But Ms. Alyssa is so devoted to you. She’s such a nice woman. How could you disappoint her?

“Did you know? She came over early this afternoon to wait for you right here. She just stood at the foot of the mountain on her own, in the cold, waiting for you to show up.

“I’ve known her for so many years. Truth be told, I’ve never seen her look so pitiful and miserable. Imagine putting all your hopes on one particular person, only to discover that it was a waste of time. I feel terrible just thinking about it!”

Jeremy held his breath. The image of Alyssa waiting bitterly for him at this place appeared in his mind.

His lips were quivering. His body, already hanging by a thread, seemed to buckle further under the weight of the guilt.

The snow was falling heavily, and the chilling winds howled through the night.

Remy had no car, so he trudged through the snow alone, each step more exhausting than the last.

His thoughts were consumed with Alyssa-was she still alive? In danger? And Jeremy’s unrelenting resolve to reach her, even after being shot and drenched in blood.

Remy pressed his calloused, trembling hand to his chest. His heart hammered in his ribcage erratically.

A sharp, searing pain shot through his temples, blurring his vision. He collapsed to his knees in the snow, his body racked with agony. The pain surged deep within him, and his eyes felt like they were going to burst from their sockets. It was unbearable.

His breath came in ragged gasps. His hands scrambled for the necklace hanging from his neck-inside it was a hidden medicine box.

Justin had told him that the medication in there could calm him down and relieve him of any pain. It would be able to save his life.

But in his desperate haste, the pill slipped from his fingers and fell into the snow.

Remy’s head buzzed. Trembling, he searched frantically in the snow for it. He had never felt such panic.

His headache was intensifying.

In order to relieve the agonizing pain, he removed his shirt and buried his scarred body in the snow, allowing the bone-piercing iciness to relieve him of his pain.

To his surprise, this method he tried randomly was effective!

Slowly, he opened his bloodshot eyes. Though his insides still felt tight and his head throbbed, the pain was more bearable.

His face was as white as a sheet. He had just put his shirt back on when his phone rang.

Seeing that Sheryl was his caller, a look of annoyance came across his eyes. He hesitated for a moment.

He left his phone to ring for a while before answering. He placed his phone by his ear.

“Remy, I heard that you called for backup. Why? Did something happen to you?” Sheryl’s voice was emotionless as if she was just checking with him as part of a standard procedure.

A glint flashed across Remy’s eyes. In a steady voice, he answered, “Yeah, I lost my car. I need a car to head back.

Skeptically, Sheryl questioned, “You lost your car? What happened to it?”

“Jeremy stole it from me.”

Sheryl exclaimed in disbelief, “What? You didn’t stop him? Did you fail your mission?’

Remy felt suffocated. For whatever reason, he uttered a lie, which was something he had never done before.

“Mr. Justin did not ask me to take his life. I smashed his car to ruins and fought against him. He then snatched my gun from me and shot me.”

Sheryl fell silent for a moment. She seemed to have believed him.

After all, Jeremy was once the best soldier in the military academy. He was outstanding at fighting. It was only reasonable that Remy wasn’t a match for him.

“Some subordinates have left to go pick you up. But, the consequences of your failure this time are severe. When you’re on your way back, think about how you’ll explain yourself to Mr. Justin!”

Upon saying that, Sheryl hung up mercilessly.

Remy gazed into the night, his breath misting in the cold air.

After some pondering, he lifted his hand slowly and fired a shot at his left shoulder.

The pure, white snow was stained with drops of fresh blood.

As a result of the pain, Remy’s forehead became covered in cold sweat. Even so, none of the agony showed on his face.

On the contrary, he curled his lips upward into a resolute smile.

“This is my account to Mr. Justin.”

Dragging his badly wounded body, Jeremy tagged along with Elias and the rescue team as they entered the depths of the forest.

“Mr. Walsh, you really don’t look very good. Are you sure you’re alright?”

Noticing Jeremy’s face covered in sweat as if he had just gone for a dive, Elias couldn’t help but feel worried.

“You can leave it to us to search for Ms. Alyssa. Plus, Mr. Lynch has informed her family members. We have sufficient manpower, so why don’t you just wait for us at the foot of the mountain?”

“No, I have to find her.” Jeremy’s vision was clear at times and blurry at others. He trudged forward numbly. “I owe her this much.”

Elias sighed. “Both of you used to be well-known in Solana City for being a model couple. Why did you both end up in this current state? It’s such a pity…”

Jeremy pursed his lips together and hung his head low. Each step he took in the snow also seemed to leave a heavy mark on his heart.

Emotions surged within his chest, crushing and pushing against his insides silently in this freezing weather. As much as he was unwilling to admit it, he had no choice but to admit that he regretted it.

It was important to him to locate Burton Dove. But if the price for that was for Alyssa to fall into danger and risk losing her life…
