His dark eyes looked so tender, sincere, and profound.
Nevertheless, to Alyssa, it felt like his eyes would become an abyss of etemal damnation once she took a wrong step.
Justin’s public appearance with Alyssa at the Walsh family’s party stirred up endless speculation. They even became a trending topic.
Not only that, news about Jeremy and Alyssa’s breakup spread like wildfire.
Feeling down, Jeremy left the venue before the party even ended.
After getting into the car, he ripped off the tie bar that Sheryl gave to him. With a repulsed look in his eyes, he flung it carelessly at Xavier, who was driving.
“That’s for you.”
Xavier was confused. He caught the tie bar in his hands and asked, “What’s this, Mr. Walsh?
Jeremy closed his eyes to rest. He tugged at his tie knot but still felt suffocated.
“It was from Sheryl,” he answered.
Xavier let out a cry. “This filthy thing is from that wild woman? I don’t want it!”
With a disgusted look on his face, Xavier hurled the tie bar aside. I’m already seeing someone. I don’t want my girlfriend to misunderstand me.”
Girlfriend?”
Yeah, Mr. Walsh. Maggie is my girlfriend.”
With his eyes closed, Jeremy frowned. “She’s become of age?
Xavier didn’t know how he should react. “She’s already in university, Mr. Walsh. Am I that much of an animal in your eyes?”
Suddenly, the memory of himself and Alyssa rescuing Maggie flashed through Jeremy’s mind.
Just then, Xavier exclaimed in surprise, “Mr. Walsh, look!”
Jeremy opened his eyes slowly, and his heart jolted. Standing alone before his car was Alyssa, framed against the piercing headlights, snow swirling around her. The wind tossed her dark hair, and she looked almost fragile as if the wind might carry her away.
Without hesitation, Jeremy stepped out of the car and approached her.
“Hi, Mr. Walsh.” Alyssa smiled slightly at him.
Looking at her face, which had tumed red from the cold, he could tell that she had been wandering outdoors for a very long time.
He opened his mouth to speak but could not make a sound. All he could taste was a slight bitterness at the back of his throat. He remembered that she was someone who got cold quite easily.
Once the temperature dropped, she loved to snuggle in his arms and use his hands as her source of heat; his hands kept her warm regardless of the time of day.
Alyssa didn’t hope to hear any words of concem from him. Even so, she didn’t mind it. She softly asked, “Mr. Walsh, do you have time for a chat?”
Jeremy pursed his lips. ‘Let’s chat in my car.”
“Sure. Thank you.” Alyssa was very courteous to him. Even her way of speech sounded a little distant.
Her mature and sensible demeanor annoyed Jeremy.
Xavier, being quick-witted, made space for this pair of ex-lovers to spend time together by getting out of the car to wait for them.
“It’s your birthday tomorrow,” Alyssa spoke up first to break the awkward atmosphere.
“Yeah.” Jeremy looked askance at her. He gulped silently.
He was just about to say that he didn’t need any gifts when Alyssa surprised him with her next statement.
“Do you remember what you promised me?”
Jeremy locked startled. He answered in a low, deep voice, “Of course.”
“It’s time for you to keep your promise.”
“Then, it’s time for you to fulfill that promise.” She clenched her hands, her gaze intense. “I want you to go on a hike with me tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.”
Jeremy was surprised. He narrowed his eyes and asked, ‘A hike? Where?’
“At Crater Mountain, Do you remember where that is?”
Alyssa laughed softly and choked, “Many years ago, you once saved a woman from a storm at that place. That was the beginning of your story with her.”
Jeremy’s heart skipped a beat. He balled his hands into fists. He hadn’t lost his memories. Of course he remembered.
What I want you to promise me is to go hiking with me tomorrow.”
“Is that all?”
Alyssa clicked her tongue. “If not, what did you think I’d ask you to do? To give yourself to me?’
Alyssa crossed her arms before her chest and tilted her chin proudly as if the high and noble Alyssa Taylor from the past had returned.
“Don’t be so verbose. Are you going to promise me or not?”
“I promise,” Jeremy answered without any hesitation.
“Great. Pinky promise.”
Without waiting for Jeremy to react, Alyssa grabbed his warm hand. She extended that disabled pinky finger on her left hand. Strenuously and clumsily, she locked her pinky finger with his.
At that moment, Jeremy’s pupils constricted. He could feel that quiver in her pinky as a jolt of electricity shot through his heart.
Alyssa released Jeremy’s hand and quickly opened the car door.
“Mr. Walsh, see you there, rain or shine.”
The warmth of her touch left his fingers as she withdrew, Jeremy instinctively curled his fingers inward, his mouth parting to say something anything but hesitation held him back. Without waiting for his response, Alyssa slipped out of the car and disappeared into the night without a backward glance. It wasn’t until she was fully gone that he whispered in a low, hoarse voice, “See you there, rain or shine.”
When Alyssa returned to the parking lot, Sean was standing worriedly beside the car, waiting for her.
Seeing her approach, eyes glistening with unshed tears, he knew she had just seen Jeremy. A dull ache tugged at his heart, and he was certain their conversation had been anything but pleasant.
“Ms. Alyssa, he began softly, “I know you’re relentless in everything you pursue. But some things in life… they just can’t be forced. Sometimes, letting go can be its own kind of freedom.”
He knew his words were harsh, almost ruthless. But the last thing he wanted was to see Alyssa shattered over Jeremy.
“Sean, I understand what you’re trying to say… I really do.” Alyssa lowered her head, her hands cold in her coat pockets, fingers clenched tight in silent resolve. “But I just want one last chance. This will be it. If those memories we shared can’t reignite his feelings for me, then I’ll walk away for good.”
Sean’s eyes stung at her words. He never imagined that someone as proud and indomitable as Alyssa would be brought to such depths over Jeremy. Was this their fate? Or some twisted form of karma?
Trying to change the subject, Alyssa asked with a soft smile, “Sean, Taty’s eight months along now, isn’t she? I heard you’re having a boy.”
“Yes, we’re having a boy.”
A fond smile crossed Sean’s face, though tinged with a hint of helplessness. “You know, once I absentmindedly mentioned wanting a daughter, and when we found out it was a boy, Taty was down for days.
“But honestly, as long as our child, I’ll love them with all my heart. I just didn’t want her to think I favored having a son over a daughter.
“It’s not like I have a dynasty to continue. Even if I did, a queen is just as worthy-like you, Ms. Alyssa. You are KS Group’s queen.”
Alyssa waved his compliment away with a dismissive gesture, her expression growing serious. “I’m no queen, Sean. I’m just a high-ranking employee serving Winston and the interests of KS Group. Everything I do is for them.
“I may not understand what pregnancy feels like, but at a time like this, you should be spending more time with Taty. You’ve been running yourself ragged over Project A5 and barely see her. I feel guilty for keeping you away.
“Go and spend the night at Heights new Villa tonight. I’ll give you a few days off. You don’t have to do anything else but spend time with Taty.”
Concerned, Sean argued, “But, Ms. Alyssa, you won’t have anyone to watch over you.”
“I plan to give myself a few days off too.”
As Alyssa pondered her upcorning meeting with Jeremy, a rare, heartfelt smile spread across her face. The prospect of seeing him, rain or shine, filled her with a joy she hadn’t felt in ages.
