Wouldn’t it then be possible for her to benefit from being close to Jeremy, which would result in them developing feelings for one another?
Alyssa’s husband was about to be stolen from her.
They were in a dangerous situation!
“Xavier, go make me a cup of coffee.” Jeremy was completely disinterested in the dispute between Xavier and Sheryl. He lowered his eyes and continued looking through a document.
Through gritted teeth, Xavier acknowledged, “Will do, Mr. Walsh.”
The look in Sheryl’s eyes dimmed. She smiled and asked in a calm voice, “Mr. Walsh, do you enjoy drinking coffee?”
Jeremy answered, ‘Yes.’
“Not only can I brew tea, but my coffee-brewing skills are pretty good too. Shall I brew some for you to try next time?’
“To date, I have never seen anyone make coffee better than my girlfriend does.”
The moment Jeremy blurted that statement, his heart started pounding hard.
The images that flashed through his mind were from those early mornings after he had made love with Alyssa.
She stood in the kitchen, clasping gently at the nightgown draped around her. He saw how adorable and pleased she looked as she hummed a tune while making coffee for him.
A ray of sunshine shone warmly on that beautiful and attractive face of hers. In his memory, he once wrapped his arms around that slim waist of hers because he just couldn’t help himself.
He’d lower his head and kiss her deeply on her blushing cheeks and on every part of her that he set his eyes on. “Jeremy, will you always love me?*
“Lyse, I love you… I will always love you.”
Jeremy’s heartbeat was always steady. All of a sudden, he could feel his heart skip a beat.
He steadied his breathing and corrected himself in a low voice, “I meant my ex-girlfriend.”
“Oh, Ms. Alyssa? I do admit that she’s a multi-talented woman.” Sheryl laughed tenderly. She leaned in toward Jeremy and continued in a profound tone, ‘But over time, one is bound to get sick of coffee brewed by the same person. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a taste of something different.”
“Dr. Gillis, aren’t you encroaching on my personal matters?” Jeremy finally lifted his eyes. He stared at Sheryl with a frigid gaze.
Sheryl scoffed on the inside. She pulled out a few packets of pills from her bag and placed them before Jeremy. “This is a medication that I’ve prescribed for you, Mr. Jeremy. It’s meant to treat your current symptoms specifically. You may try taking it for a while. If it’s not effective, you can just stop taking it.’
Jeremy had just picked up the pills when Xavier walked over with coffee. He stared at Sheryl coldly.
“Mr. Walsh almost lost his life because he consumed medications from an unknown source. Did you think that he would just take these funny substances that you’ve just whipped out out of nowhere?”
In other words, he suspected something fishy about the medication.
After all, Sheryl was someone who worked under Justin. Even if Jeremy was indebted to Justin, he still needed to be wary of him.
Brotherhood was not a concept within wealthy families other than in the Taylor family. The Schmidt family was one such example.
Sheryl sniggered arrogantly. “I know what you’re worried about, Mr. Hall. Back then, Mr. Justin almost died trying to save Mr. Jeremy. How many brothers on this earth would be able to do what Mr. Justin did?
“If he had motives of his own, wouldn’t it save his time and energy if he had just abandoned Mr. Jeremy back then?
Xavier was fuming. Yet, what Sheryl said was true. He couldn’t fight back.
There was a slight quiver in Jeremy’s eyes as he pursed his lips.
“If both of you have your reservations about the medication and Mr. Justin’s sincerity, I have a simple solution for you. Just take these pills and run tests on them. I’ll take them myself if you find any problems with them,” Sheryl challenged fearlessly and straightforwardly.
“Please thank Justin on my behalf.” Jeremy looked at Sheryl with an emotionless gaze. “I will take the medications. I’ve got work to do, so you may go ahead and take your leave, Dr. Gillis.”
“I shall not take up any more of your time, Mr. Jeremy. Contact me promptly if you feel unwell in any way.
Upon saying that, Sheryl turned and walked to the door.
“Xavier, I will attend the charity event on the weekend,” Jeremy informed in a deep voice.
Xavier was overjoyed. “Got it, Mr. Walsh. I will make the necessary arrangements shortly!”
Sheryl’s eyes briefly lit up before they narrowed. Then, she strutted away.
The moment the door was closed, Jeremy picked up the pills. With a frosty look on his face, he tossed them into the trash can.
“Mr. Walsh, have you come to your senses?” Xavier was so close to bursting into happy tears. He had thought that Jeremy had already been blinded by that cunning fox!
“It’s true that Justin saved me. But that doesn’t mean I’d have to accept everything he gives me.”
Jeremy closed the document on his desk. As he breathed slowly, he recalled the conversation he and Justin had on the rooftop the other day.
He could feel a dull pain in his temples as he tightened his grip around the pen in his hand.
In the blink of an eye, the weekend was here.
This year’s Solana City charity event was different from past events. Several affluent families from the city, as well as government and non-government organizations, had come together to form a charity foundation. Such events allowed people to showcase their generosity and build a positive public image.
Alyssa, now the president of KS Group, had an obligation to attend, especially since she was already at the forefront of many philanthropic efforts.
Her Rolls-Royce glided to a halt outside Solana City’s largest orphanage, one of the foundation’s key initiatives. Unlike the glamorous charity dinners, the daytime event at the orphanage involved more hands-on effort, so most of the affluent chose not to participate.
As Alyssa and Sean stepped out of the car, Andie Campbell, the orphanage director, greeted them.
It had just snowed last night, so the courtyard was covered in a blanket of white. Teachers and volunteers were clearing the snow away.
“This year’s event has brought a lot of energy to our orphanage,” Andie began.
While showing Alyssa around, Andie remarked with a sense of relief, ‘In previous years, the charity dinner was always bustling with activity, while our orphanage remained so quiet. Hardly anyone cared to visit. This shows you have a kind heart, Ms. Alyssa. You really care about children.”
Alyssa gave a small, thoughtful nod. “Is there anyone else attending today, aside from myself?”
“Yes! Mr. Walsh from the Walsh Group is here too.”
Suddenly, Alyssa stopped in her tracks. Her heart hammered against her chest as she asked in a slightly hoarse voice, “Mr. Walsh… Where is he?”
“He’s playing soccer with the children in the back.”
Alyssa forced herself to hold back that strong urge of hers to meet with Jeremy. She went to the back, pretending to be calm. Before she even stepped out there, she could hear joyful laughter from the children.
In the next second, she froze on the spot. Her racing heart sank in disappointment.
The view before her eyes was a snowy white scene as serene as a painting.
Justin was wearing a black woolen coat as he sat in his wheelchair, maneuvering it around the children. He smiled from ear to ear while playing soccer with the kids.
Despite his physical limitations, he was really agile. Not only was there no sign of clumsiness, but he even appeared to have a hint of youthful vigor and recklessness.
“Watch out, sir!”
The ground was slippery due to the snow. Noticing that Justin’s wheelchair was a little unstable, a young boy rushed up to him to stabilize his wheelchair.
“Thank you, kiddo.” A warm smile came across Justin’s face as he lifted his hand and stroked the boy at the top of his head.
“Woah… Look, sir. There’s a beautiful lady over there!”
The boy pointed in Alyssa’s direction. Justin looked in the same direction and beamed.
“What a coincidence, Ms. Alyssa.”
Even though Justin was fully capable of operating his wheelchair, two young and adorable boys still helped with pushing him toward Alyssa.
“Mr. Justin, I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Although Alyssa responded politely with a smile, an observant person could tell that her smile was forced. “I didn’t think you would attend an event like today’s.”
Justin lifted his elegant and bright face. He chuckled and asked, “Were you disappointed to see me?”
Alyssa’s heart trembled. She posed an obvious question. “What is there to be disappointed about?”
