“What?”

“You almost lost your innocence!”

“Lost what?” Jeremy frowned.

“Earlier in the garden, Ms. Gillis almost threw herself at you. Luckily, my swift reflexes kicked in, and I arrived just in time to protect your virtue,” Xavier boasted, sporting a self-satisfied grin.

Virtue?

Upon seeing his smug look, Jeremy wanted to knock some sense into him.

“Even if you hadn’t appeared, I wouldn’t have any contact with any woman other than Lyse,” Jeremy stated with closed eyes. “Am I that unreliable?”

“That may be so, but even a whoremaster can’t stop a shameless bitch.”

Jeremy’s face darkened at those words.

“No matter how vigilant you are, those annoying bugs will seize any opportunity to land on you.”

Without noticing the invisible wrath enveloping him, Xavier continued to ramble on, “Seaview Manor isn’t like your private residence with Madam. It’s crowded with people of all sorts.

“If there were any physical contact between you and Ms. Gillis, and someone with ill intentions spread rumors, Madam might not allow you into bed if she hears about it.”

Anger flashed in Jeremy’s eyes as he kicked the back of Xavier’s seat. “Tell me. Who’s the whoremaster?”

Xavier’s throat went dry, and he didn’t know what to reply.

“If you can’t explain, say goodbye to your bonus for this month.”

Xavier immediately surrendered for the money. “I was wrong, Mr. Walsh! My brain short-circuited, and I used the wrong metaphor. I won’t do that again!”

Jeremy smirked, but the emotions in his eyes remained inscrutable. “Your task for the next few days is to find out Ms. Gillis’ background. Focus on her work history. I want to know whether she really worked as a doctor without borders in Luminara.”

It was late at night, and Alyssa still hadn’t fallen asleep; she was thinking about Jeremy.

While on the living room couch, she took out several pieces of her high-priced jewelry, carefully wiping and cleaning them under the light.

Some were her own designs, priceless and unattainable regardless of one’s willingness to pay. There were also items she had acquired at auctions¡ªfrom emerald bracelets to top-quality rubies, each piece was an envy-inducing treasure.

Alyssa carefully placed her treasures back in their boxes with a contented smile.

Those were all for Lauren. She had been saving them up, eagerly anticipating Lauren’s wedding day, so she could personally give her the wedding gift.

Recalling the moment when Lauren woke up holding hands with Landon and sharing a deep gaze, Alyssa couldn’t contain her emotions. Her eyes instantly welled up with tears, and a lump formed in her throat.

Everything was finally settled this time, right? No one would torment this loving couple anymore, would they?

As she finished tidying up, the door to the room was gently pushed open.

“Jeremy!” The melancholy in Alyssa’s eyes dissipated and was replaced by a bright gleam as she saw the tall figure of the man entering.

“Lyse, why are you still awake at this hour?”

Jeremy was somewhat surprised. He had entered quietly to avoid waking her up, but he hadn’t expected her to still be awake.

“You have to attend Mr. Cornelius’ funeral early tomorrow morning. Are you sure you can wake up in time, you sleepyhead?”

“I couldn’t sleep without you.” Alyssa hurried over to Jeremy and assisted him in removing his suit and loosening his tie. As she leaned in, she sniffed at his shirt collar. “You didn’t drink tonight?”

“Justin’s body can’t take alcohol, so we didn’t drink. We had tea tonight.”

Jeremy hooked his left arm around her waist while using his right hand to unbutton his shirt. His pleasant voice was laced with tenderness and guilt. “I had a chat with Grandpa, so I came back late. Sorry for making you wait.”

“What’s wrong? You seem so down tonight, like a pitiful puppy.” Alyssa brushed her fingertip against his charming double eyelids while looking at him gently. “Did Justin do something to you? Did he bully you?”

Suddenly, she pouted angrily. “If he dares to mess with you, I’ll overturn his wheelchair! If anyone bullies my man, I’ll make sure they won’t end well!”

Jeremy, who had been trying to hide his emotions, finally couldn’t restrain himself. He stared at her intensely, his eyes slightly reddened. Suddenly, he scooped her up and carried her to the bedroom.

Alyssa was gently pressed against the bed. The silk robe adorning her body gradually slipped off as they intertwined in passion.

Jeremy’s breath gradually became heavy. His eyes, blazing with desire, captivated her, causing her to lose herself in the moment.

His lips left delicate marks on her fair neck. He knew her sensitive spots well. With his touch, she felt herself melting.

Under the moonlight, the rising tide of pleasure momentarily swept away Jeremy’s troubles.

After several rounds of passionate lovemaking, Alyssa lay spent on the bed, her body too weak to even turn over.

“What’s wrong with you tonight? You were so wild,” she murmured, on the verge of falling asleep.

They remained entwined. Jeremy took her hand and intertwined his fingers with hers. He landed scorching kisses on her shoulder blades, leaving behind his fervent obsession.

“I’ll protect you, Lyse. I’ll definitely protect you. No one can touch you.”

Rosie knew that Jeremy and Alyssa were attending a funeral that day, so she got up early to prepare a hearty breakfast.

In order to let Alyssa laze in bed a little longer, Jeremy brought the food into the room and fed her bite by bite, spoiling her.

“Alright, alright. It’ll take a much longer time if you feed me. Let me do it myself.” Alyssa took the cup and gulped down the entire glass of milk in one go.

The white liquid remained at the corner of her lips. Jeremy’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he asked in a low, husky voice, “Was it good?”

“It was okay…”

Alyssa’s voice trailed off as he captured her lips and licked away the remaining milk on her lips.

“What about when compared to last night?” Jeremy’s voice tinged with a low chuckle.

“Hey! You pervert!” The memory of last night’s thrill flooded Alyssa’s mind, making her both bashful and annoyed. She playfully pounded his chest as her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue.

Jeremy couldn’t bear to tease her anymore. He regretted having her relieve him like that last night.

It didn’t matter if he felt good or not. In their intimacy, his only goal was to make sure she felt good and happy.

“Oh, by the way, I forgot to tell you something,” Jeremy said as he took a napkin to wipe her lips.

“The diagnosis came out. Betty has gone completely insane. She was sent to the hospital yesterday for shock due to excessive bleeding.”

“I can understand if Betty has lost her mind. She wasn’t a normal person in the first place. But how did she lose so much blood?” Alyssa grazed her lips against Jeremy’s palm.

“I heard she was laughing and cursing at the detention center. She’d grab anyone she saw and claim to be a Walsh, saying that her father is the president of the Walsh Group. The inmates beat her up. The more they beat, the more agitated she became.”

Jeremy’s heart melted at Alyssa’s submissive demeanor. He couldn’t resist trailing his fingertips over her milk-stained lips.

“What an ambitious lunatic.” Alyssa sneered.

“Last night, something must have snapped in Betty’s head. She cut her hand and smeared blood on her cellmate and the wall, hence the blood loss.”

“Perhaps she was already teetering on the edge of sanity then. She still remembered that she had contracted AIDS. She probably used her disease as a means to retaliate against the inmates.”

Alyssa’s eyes hardened as a cruel glint flickered within them. “But honestly, it’s better this way. I was at a loss about what to do with her.”

Legally, Betty would face three to five years for assault. However, if deemed mentally unstable, she’d be committed to a mental institution. There, she could continue to cling to her delusion of being a Walsh and live out her days.

That day marked Cornelius’ funeral.

A shocking tragedy had struck the Harper household, leaving a family shattered by internal strife.

Landon bore the weight of great misfortune. Yet, despite the turmoil, the funeral proceeded smoothly thanks to his efforts.

Cornelius had been a legend and a powerful figure in his time. To face such a tragedy at the end of his life was devastating.

Yet, more often than not, once an influential person lost their position of power, others ceased to care. The attendees were mostly acquaintances from the business world or old friends. Loyal to a fault, these “people of the trade” ensured a respectable ceremony even amidst the Harper Group’s controversies.

Landon, Cornelius’ eldest grandson, wore a simple black suit and carried his grandfather’s photo as they made their way to the burial site. His heavy steps mirrored the weight of his grief while his emotionless eyes, a stoic mask concealing utter devastation.
