Alyssa’s desire to make her family proud was marred by the unfortunate targeting. Otherwise, it would have ended perfectly.
When they left the racecourse, Winston patted Jameson’s shoulders approvingly. He said gratefully, “Thank you for today, Jameson.
“Don’t worry. Let me know if the Harper Group picks a bone with you next time. You’ve been such a great help to Lyse. I won’t put you in an embarrassing position.”
A humble and compliant smile appeared on Jameson’s face. Before he could say anything, Alyssa’s cold and indifferent voice came from behind, “Dad, you must be getting old. He never appeared throughout the incident. Now, you’re rewarding him because he showed up and said something at the very end. Don’t be so ridiculous.”
Jameson had his back facing Alyssa, his face turning grim as he adjusted his glasses.
Jeremy stood beside Alyssa, lightly pursing his lips. He wanted to stop her, but her words beat him to it. Moreover, intervening now would mean falling for Jameson’s trap. He would then be his bitch, as Landon had disgustingly phrased it.
“Lyse, are you okay? Does your waist hurt?”
Winston wasn’t bothered about Alyssa’s sarcasm. He was more concerned about her injury. “You are so stubborn. You should have gone to the hospital the moment you fell from the horse. Jonah and Mr. Atkins could have taken care of Blaze. Why do you need to do it personally?
“You are just like your mother. Even ten horses wouldn’t be able to pull you back when you are this stubborn. Jonah, get on the phone with Mr. Liverton now. Get Lyse to the hospital and gather a group of specialists to get her treated.”
However, Jonah read the situation well and didn’t comply. Jeremy and Alyssa wanted time alone. It would be awkward if he forced his way between them.
“It’s okay. I have Jeremy to help.”
Alyssa proudly laced her fingers with Jeremy’s, turning to gaze deeply into his eyes. Under that burning gaze, there was no room for anyone else. “Dad, let me remind you¡ªa true man doesn’t try to flaunt what he has done to gain favor.
“Who collected evidence, apprehended the culprit, and stood up for me, Blaze, and the Taylor family under great pressure? Who was the one who quietly did everything and never spoke to you about it, keeping his name and hard work under wraps?
“I hope you can be more discerning and not be swayed by an outsiders sweet talk. Don’t place yourself in a bad place and become a laughingstock.”
After Alyssa finished speaking, she walked past Winston and Jameson proudly with Jeremy’s hand in hers.
A chilling sense of abandonment grazed Jameson’s shoulders. His heart was pricked painfully, and his face was downcast as he clenched his fingers tightly.
When Jeremy walked past Winston, he didn’t forget to nod at Winston politely. It was hilarious how stiff he was.
“That brat! I’ve lost control over her now.”
Winston glared at their backs as they left. He didn’t stop them but pointed at his daughter’s retreating figure and reprimanded, “You are so sharp-tongued. The person you marry would be the unluckiest man in the world.”
Jonah and Lyla couldn’t help but laugh after hearing it.
Even if men wanted to become this unlucky, they would have to wait in line.
Jameson watched as Alyssa sat in Jeremy’s passenger seat and left. Hatred and dissatisfaction hit his chest like a raging storm, his eyes reddening.
However, he collected himself and looked at Winston grimly. “Uncle Winston, it was my fault for acting too slow toward Lyse’s accident. I didn’t get to the bottom of it in time and have caused so much trouble for you and Lyse.”
“Don’t say that. You have done enough. The Harpers might have devoured Lyse alive if you hadn’t shown up in time.” Winston maintained his friendly tone
“If I’d done better, Lyse might look my way more. Then, you wouldn’t need to worry for us that much, too.” Jameson lowered his head, riddled with guilt.
“Jameson, I noticed everything you’ve sacrificed for Lyse.”
Winston pondered for a moment. His eyes flickered as he said earnestly, “But you have to understand that love cannot be forced.”
Jameson’s eyes shrank; his heart stopped. He didn’t understand what Winston meant.
Previously, Winston had sworn to help him and Alyssa get together. Now, he had changed his mind. Jameson wondered if Winston’s impression of Jeremy had shifted because the latter had helped the Taylor family find the culprit during the horseracing event.
Was it that easy for Winston to overlook Jeremy’s wrongdoings toward Alyssa over the years?
Or perhaps Winston had never hated Jeremy as much as he claimed in the beginning.
Jameson had tried so hard to excel in front of Winston. Just when he believed he had the happiness he had dreamed of within reach, Winston casually said that to him.
All of Jameson’s efforts proved futile as he found himself back at the same starting line as Jeremy. He couldn’t accept that outcome. He needed Alyssa. He had to marry her!
“Yes, Mr. Jameson. Love can’t be forced,” Lyla said.
Lyla then walked elegantly to Winston’s side and caressed his waist. Her tone was gentle and non- threatening, yet each word felt like a stranglehold on Jameson’s throat. “I’m sure Winston didn’t mean it. We know you are serious about Lyse.
“But, it takes two hands to clap for love to last. As Lyse’s family, we are thorough with everything we do because we want Lyse to be happy. If she eventually marries someone she didn’t love, we would be kissing her happiness in this lifetime goodbye.”
Jonah was silent. His lips curled into a mocking smile as he stared contemptuously into Jameson’s eyes.
Lyla usually appeared gentle and harmless. However, she was an intelligent person.
Her intelligence lay in how well she knew Winston. She didn’t mention Jeremy the entire time and played the emotion card. Winston, a man who stood for love to be free, understood his daughter’s situation
Jameson’s face turned stiff and pale. A dark glint lingered in his eyes. He could barely hold his chivalrous and elegant demeanor any longer.
“Jameson, Lyla is right. You can take a horse to the water but not make it drink.”
Winston sighed thoughtfully, “Don’t be disappointed and don’t be overly stubborn. Let things be.” Alyssa was unwilling to head to the hospital. However, Jeremy eventually managed to coax her into receiving treatment.
By the time they returned home after treating her wounds, it was late into the night.
“Why are you so annoying, always going against me? I told you I don’t need to go to the hospital for this injury! Ouch!”
Alyssa struggled to exit the car, her aggression causing her to injure her waist. Deep furrows formed on her brows, reflecting the pain as she gasped for air.
Jeremy was so anxious that he could hardly catch his breath. He quickly scooped her into his embrace. “You eejit! Stop being so stubborn! Do you have any idea how loud your screams were while you were receiving treatment at the hospital?”
“I-I didn’t scream.” Alyssa’s delicate face turned as red as a tomato.
“What do you mean? I thought I was standing in front of the delivery room while you were giving birth to our baby.” Jeremy lowered his head and kissed her sweaty face hard.
His breathing was heavy, and his kiss was forceful, as if he was punishing her.
Alyssa thought about the word “baby”.
An agonizing pain swelled in her heart as she instinctively tried to slip away.
Jeremy didn’t notice something was off with her. He thought she was acting unnaturally because of her wounds. Without saying a word, he carried her into the villa.
Everything that took place at the horse racing event shook the entire country like a nuclear bomb. Upon discovering the news, Rosie skipped her dinner and anxiously awaited Jeremy and Alyssa’s return.
“Madam Alyssa, how is your injury?” Rosie saw the ugly look on Alyssa’s face and how Jeremy was carrying her in his arms. She was about to burst into tears as her heart ached.
“I’m okay, Mrs. Rosie. I can walk.”
Alyssa pouted and lightly punched Jeremy’s chest. “It’s his fault for making it such a big deal. I’m not as fragile as he thinks.”
Jeremy chuckled lightly. His eyes were filled with affection. “Yes, yes. My beautiful Lyse is a warrior. She is the coolest and sassiest woman I’ve ever met in my life.”
He didn’t like to use the word “strong” to describe a woman. No one was willing to be strong if they had a choice.
Alyssa was like a delicate flower Jeremy cared for attentively. No matter how big the storm or how vicious the battle was, he was there to defend her.
Alyssa was so starved that her stomach rumbled.
Rosie hastily went to the kitchen to make dinner for both of them. However, Alyssa was restlessly asking for a shower.
“I want a nice-smelling bubble bath. I smell like horse shit!”
“No. The doctor told me specifically that your wounds can’t be in contact with water for a week. Otherwise, it will get infected.”
Jeremy carried her back to the room. “I’ll wipe you off, okay?”
“Will I be clean from wiping?” Alyssa pouted sulkily.
“Of course. When have I not helped you?”
Jeremys breath landed against her ears. His voice was raspy and enticing. “I guarantee you will be squeaky clean inside out.”
“D-Don’t you dare have any naughty ideas. I’m exhausted today, and I want to sleep.”
The positions that appeared in Alyssa”s mind were enough to make her blush. Plus, with Jeremy’s naughty words and the moon shining bright outside the window, her delicate body began to turn warm.
