“And haven’t you noticed? Ms. Lauren has been happier and more

Javier nodded.

Even he didn’t know how long it had been since he had seen Lauren smile so brightly. It was evident that Landon was truly good to her, and she genuinely felt happiness from the bottom of her heart.

“I’ve spoiled Betty too much. She’s Lauren’s sister. How could she do this?”

Javier thought of the innocent and adorable Betty from childhood and felt heartbroken at the current situation.

“Mr. Javier, you should understand the principle of ‘one who keeps company with the wolf will learn to howl,” Rory pointed out. Javier’s eyes turned deep, and his jawline tightened.

Just then, someone knocked at the door. Betty’s sickly, sweet voice floated through. “Are you in there, Dad?”

“Come in.”

Betty opened the door and walked in with a plate of snacks. She was smiling widely.

“I’m sorry for causing you trouble today. I specially prepared some of your favorite fruits and treats to seek your forgiveness. Please don’t be angry at me anymore, okay?”

Betty set the plate on the table. She then went over to Javier, intending to act spoiled like she used to whenever Javier got angry at her for causing trouble.

But this time, Javier stopped her with a raised hand.

“I hope this is the last time you ever misbehave in a manner unbefitting someone of your status. You’re Ms. Betty Walsh, not some rich, disrespectful warlord. You have to behave in a classy manner. Otherwise, how would you be any different from a mad woman?” Javier chastised.

Betty’s arms were left hanging awkwardly in mid-air. Her smile was dry and pitiful. “Yes, Dad. I won’t misbehave again.”

Javier said nothing else. He didn’t even eat any of the snacks Betty brought.

“We’ll be attending the horse racing event in a couple of days, Dad. Didn’t you say I looked good in my riding habit before? I had a set customized for you. The tailor just brought it over. Why don’t you go downstairs and try it on?” Betty asked.

She tried her best to appease Javier as his anger toward her hadn’t. completely dissipated.

“I think it’s best you don’t attend the race this time, Betty,” Javier said. lightly.

“What?” Betty gasped. She immediately stomped her feet angrily. Why not? You bring me there every single year!”

“This year is an exception.”

“Why?” Betty demanded, her face beginning to crumple in anger. “All the rich socialites and heiresses will be there. How could you not bring me?”

“I’ll be bringing Lauren to this year’s races.” Javier looked down, not even sparing a glance at Betty.

“How could you do that?” There was a loud, droning noise in Betty’s head.

“Why can’t I? Lauren is my daughter and a member of our family too,” Javier responded.

When he looked at Betty now, there was a coldness in his eyes that had never been seen before. “Plus, you’ve already been to the races. for so many years. You must be bored of it by now. Lauren has never attended the event, and many people in Solana City don’t know her well.

“From now on, I’ll give Lauren more chances to make a public appearance. It’s only fair.”

Fair?

Javier had neglected Lauren for more than a decade, but here he was suddenly bringing up the issue of fairness?

“What is it? You don’t seem very happy.” Javier cocked an eyebrow. noun’t you Do Luminy vurunu snunny her, being her big sister and all?”

“It’s… it’s not that, Dad… Lauren is autistic. What if she has a meltdown at the races when you bring her there? How could she handle it all?” Betty stammered.

“You don’t need to worry about that. Mr. Harper will be taking good care of her.”

Betty flushed red and paled at the same time. She had nothing else to say now.

“You can leave now. I have some things I need to do,” Javier said.

Betty’s expression was stiff and pale. When she turned to leave, she ground her teeth, her eyes boiling with rage.

Jeffrey was tossing and turning restlessly in East Solana Federal Prison. It was now midnight, and it had been days since Alyssa and Jeremy paid him a visit. However, he had spent every night unable to fall asleep, continually thinking back to all that Alyssa had said to him.

la him waver even

Her offer to him had been too tantalizing. It though it was likely a trick.

But Jeffrey despised Alyssa and Jeremy too much. He hated what a perfect match they were, how powerful and rich they were. One was a wealthy business magnate in Solana City, the other a multifaceted heiress.

Just the thought of them angered Jeffrey to no end. Plus, it was still their fault that he was in jail right now.

With nowhere to vent his anger, Jeffrey could only hope Sophia continued giving them the hell out in the world. If she could, her wanted both Alyssa and Jeremy to die!

Jeffrey’s days in prison weren’t the most comfortable, but he was still relatively safe.

In recent days, however, he felt like he was being watched. It often made chills run down his spine. Even his meals tasted blandder than usual.

Jeffrey lay in his dingy little cot at night, fearful chills still running through his body as he tossed and turned.

When exhaustion finally swept across Jeffrey, a sudden rustling noise rang out. It was only a short distance away from him.

It was an incredibly soft noise. Jeffrey wouldn’t have heard it if it

Just as Jeffrey was about to get out of bed, a sharp breeze aimed right at his back struck. He tried to dodge it, but it was still too late.

Jeffrey let out a grunt as an intense and terrifying pain immediately spread through Jeffrey’s entire being in the dark cell.

Jeffrey saw that the male prisoner he shared the cell with had. stabbed a toothbrush right into his neck. It had been sharpened to a deadly point. Jeffrey’s eyes were wide with shock. He could even hear the sound of his own blood oozing out his neck.

“Go to hell,” the prisoner growled out, digging the toothbrush harder. into Jeffrey’s neck.

Jeffrey was stunned. He gripped the man’s arms and croaked out, Who … who are … you…”

“You and I don’t know one another. I was paid to take care of someone else’s dirty business. That’s all.”

Paid to take care of dirty business?

A person’s name instantly appeared in Jeffrey’s mind-Sophia!

Jeremy didn’t rush back to tend to Walsh Group after his return from. Tsulu. Instead, he stayed at Alyssa’s house to recover further.

But when Alyssa was fast asleep late at night, Jeremy would go to the study to take care of urgent company matters. He only snuck back. into bed near dawn and kissed Alyssa all over before settling to sleep.

Alyssa brought Jeremy to the Taylor family’s hospital that afternoon, where Abel personally did a checkup for him.

When Alyssa heard that Jeremy’s shoulder and spinal injuries were recovering speedily, she was overjoyed. She clung to him tightly,

“Wonderful. This is wonderful!” she cried.

Alyssa was oblivious to how tempting her actions were to Jeremy. She focused on being happy for Jeremy and was eager to express said happiness.

Alyssa didn’t notice how Jeremy’s eyes were burning with desire.

He swallowed his saliva, gazing at Alyssa’s sparkling eyes, and said, ” Yes, it truly is, Lyse…”

He then whispered in her ear, “I’ve been waiting for this day for so long I fear I might go mad.”

“You…” Alyssa could sense the desire in Jeremy’s tone. Her heart. skipped a beat as she blushed.

“Ahem… Congratulations on your recovery, Mr. Walsh. I’ll be leaving first. You two can rest here in my office in the meantime. Goodbye!” Abel said.

Abel had three kids of his own. He knew what the youth these days had on their minds. He’d truly be dumb if he didn’t leave Alyssa and Jeremy alone now.

“Don’t, Dr. Liverton. I-I still have something I want to ask you about. I’ll come with you!” Alyssa quickly tried to run away from Jeremy, face still flushed.

The moment she did, however, Jeremy’s hands clasped her tightly against his waist, making her unable to pull away.

“Oh, no. You’re Dr. Burton, after all. I’m the one who has a lot t from you. Please don’t put this stress on me!” Abel said as he out the door. He was right about to close it.

“Wait for me! We can learn from one another!” Alyssa cried, shoving Jeremy away with a firm push like a prey running away from its predator.
