His heart twinged.
Just how much had she been through before he found her?
“Let’s find shelter from the rain first.” Jeremy carried her on his back and continued walking.
Alyssa’s arms weakly wrapped around his neck as she mewled, “Will we get out of here alive, Jeremy?”
“Yes.”
“I nearly died… What if …”
“I heard they call you the Mountain Goddess here.” Jeremy walked on, his strength slowly dissipating.
“They sometimes call me the Mountain God, too.”
“Alyssa scoffed and closed her eyes.
“So we’re going to be just fine, Alyssa.” Jeremy took a deep breath, gently tugging on her hand. “I’ll keep you safe.”
All Alyssa could feel in the endless cold was how warm her hands were.
Jeremy heid onto her hands, making sure her fingers were kept safe from the harsh weather. It felt like the only thing keeping her near-dead nerves alive.
She leaned on his back, knowing he would keep her safe. Her fingers twitched just the slightest in
Jeremy’s grasp.
Jeremy swallowed nervously. Fearing she might pull away, he tightened his grip. “Stay still. Good girl.”
His back was hurting like mad where the boulder had hit his spine. Still, he was doing a good job of hiding his pain. He didn’t want her to worry.
Just this once, Jeremy wanted her to know she could rely on and be safe with him.
“Ugh… It’s cold. Hurry up then…” Alyssa grumbled.
“Hold on a bit longer. We should be able to find shelter soon.” Every breath Jeremy took evaporated into mist.
“What if we don’t?”
Before Jeremy could stop himself, he responded, “Then you can take shelter in my arms.”
H
“No!” Alyssa whined. “Don’t you dare try and take advantage of me!”
Jeremy smiled. Though she wasn’t staying very still, he still could support her weight. Even his heart felt warm and glad for this moment with her.
He should really focus on finding shelter for them, though. It was not like she could run away from him right now.
The two stayed close to one another, their breathing and heartbeats nearly in sync.
It was as if time had turned back to 13 years ago-the only change being that Alyssa was no longer the young girl he had met. She had even married him and been his wife for three years.
Meanwhile, Sean had rushed back to the base camp with only an umbrella for protection from the rain, having been worried about Alyssa.
Upon his arrival, he was soaked through with rainwater and had mud caked at the ends of his pants.
“Ms. Alyssal’ he cried right before opening the doors.
Elijah and Xavier just so happened to walk out.
“You!” Xavier exclaimed in shock, then quickly composed himself.
“What are you… is Jeremy Walsh here? Where’s Ms. Alyssa?” Sean had a nagging sense that something was very wrong right now,
“Quiet down, will you?” Xavier quickly shut him up. He was just as worried, but he trusted that Alyssa would be kept safe and protected by the forces above. He also had faith that his boss would be able to do the same.
“Mr. Jeremy and the rest of the rangers are up in the mountains looking for Madam. I’ve already dispatched three helicopters to search for them, too, and Mr. Jeremy has sworn not to come back down the mountain until he finds her!”
Sean couldn’t help but reel at Xavier’s words. He couldn’t believe someone as cruel as Jeremy would be so devoted to Alyssa.
“It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have let Allison go out on the search patrol!” Elijah wailed.
“Don’t say that, sir. Have some faith in Mr. Jeremy. He’s the ‘Mountain God’ for a reason, no?”
Elijah was rendered speechless.
Xavier was really good at making the atmosphere awkward.
“No, I don’t trust Jeremy Walsh! Mr. Jonah needs to hear about this!” Sean hurriedly pulled out his phone to give Jonah call.
When the line connected, Jonah instantly asked, “Did something happen to Alyssa?”
Maybe it was because of their sibling bond, but he had felt off all day. Now that Sean had called him, he was sure something terrible had happened to his sister.
“Sir!” Sean cried, “Ms. Alyssa is… You need to send someone to Crater Mountain Park to save her now!”
Jonah had been over 300 miles outside Solana City when he received the call from Sean. He was currently in Leichtown’s military department.
Since he’d stopped by, he naturally had to pay his brother Liam a visit. His mother had birthed the four of them, including Alyssa, so his love for all his three brothers and his sister went unrivaled.
However, Liam had to live apart from their family, given that he had become a colonel at the age of 28.
He had to be stationed in Leichtown, where he headed the local military force.
That was why Jonah would always take the opportunity to see his third brother.
“Something has happened to Lyse, Liam. I need to return to Solana City right away.” Worry colored
Jonah’s eyes.
“What did you say?” Liam leaped up from the couch he was sitting on, instantly becoming alert. His usually cool and calm demeanor had dissipated in seconds upon hearing that his sister was in trouble.
Jonah replied hoarsely, “Our beloved Lyse has gone to volunteer as a park ranger once again.”
Liam cursed aloud, marching back and forth worriedly. If any of his subordinates saw him right now, they would probably think they were dreaming.
“I’ve told her countless times to just donate money instead of going on those ranger patrols. All she does is put herself in harm’s way! But she never listens!” Jonah huffed.
“I don’t understand why she insists on going there. Are there any mineral mines, or does she visit some hermit to learn the arcane arts there?”
Liam scowled. All of a sudden, he appeared so much like their father, Winston.
Jonah shot him a long look. “Did you forget what happened to her when she was 11?”
“Of course not!” Liam’s eyes narrowed as he heaved a sigh. “That… bastard Jeremy kid!”
“The longer I live, the more I’m convinced Mom gave birth to the four of us so we could protect her.” Jonah also heaved a sigh. He turned to leave. “I need to go save her. We’ll talk again soon, Liam.”
“Wait up!” Liam cried, putting on his cap. “I’m coming with you!”
It was unclear how much time had passed before Jeremy eventually stumbled upon a small cave in the mountainside for their shelter.
Trembling violently, Alyssa sought refuge against the rock wall, her arms wrapped around her in an attempt to stay warm.
The sight of her looking so fragile tugged at Jeremy’s heartstrings. He went up and gently cupped her frigid cheeks.
His expression darkened. Alyssa was burning up.
“You’re having a fever!”
“I’m… I’m okay. I can handle it.” Alyssa allowed herself to feel the coolness of his touch on her skin, not shying away for once.
Jeremy hurriedly felt the temperature of her forehead. Feeling panicked, he took off his coat and shirt and wrapped them around Alyssa, giving her warmth.
Alyssa weakly opened her eyes and saw that he only had a black singlet inside. The tan lines of his muscle were right in her face, making him look extra rugged out here in the wild.
