Alyssa’s phone was buzzing. She checked her screen and saw a text from Sean. He wrote, “Everything’s in order. Waiting for your approval.”
The luxurious stage in the ballroom was decorated with fresh flowers. The lights beyond the stage dimmed as the stage basked in a brilliant spotlight.
Jeremy and Landon arrived late at the ballroom. Despite their low-profile entrance, they immediately became the center of attraction.
All eyes were on the two men as the guests gossiped.
“I’m surprised that the haughty and self-important Mr. Walsh showed up at Ms. Gardner’s birthday party. She must have some solid connections.”
“You are na ive to believe that this is just abirthday party. Did you notice that her parents and Jeremy Walsh’s parents are here? They’re using the birthday party as a platform for an important announcement.”

Liana was on cloud nine upon hearing the compliments and applause from the audience. The only thing missing was Jeremy¡ªhe should have been standing by her side. Still, that did not take away the glamour of the event.

The audience hushed. Javier’s smile was hard to decipher. Meanwhile, Liana’s parents stared at the stage with eager eyes.
“Our Lia will soon be officially engaged toJeremy!”
“Wow!” There was a collective gasp fromthe audience, followed by an even more thunderous applause.
Landon was taken ab ack by the announcement and shot Jeremy a worrisome gaze. Jeremy stood frozen with a cold expression, as though he’d turn anyone to ice upon touch.
Worse, a spotlight traveled across the audience and hit Jeremy like a ruthless mockery. It further highlighted his lifeless face.

Sophia grasped Liana’s hand tightly. Her face was flushed from excitement, and her tone was animated as if she were at a wedding.

Jeremy felt his ears buzzing. His body and fingers stiffened. Like a pulled bow, he was close to a breakdown.
All of a sudden, the screen that was filled with falling pink petals switched to total darkness.
“Huh? What’s wrong?”
“Is there a power cut? Or is the screenbroken?”
Amid the confusion, the screen lit up again, this time with a photo of a young girl. The girl was petite and all bones. Her hair was messy, and her outfit was ragged. Her face was stained with tears and snot. One couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.

Liana and Sophia realized that something had gone wrong when they sensed the commotion in the audience. They spun around to look at the screen.
