“Mr. Javier had hired a classical opera singer for sir, as something special for his birthday, but her student came to me just now reporting that the singer suddenly caught a terrible bug. She’s still in the bathroom, unable to perform,” Ben said worriedly.

He continued, “What can be done? The singer was hired just to perform for Mr. Walsh Senior. He’s going to be disappointed. The guests will make a fool of us.”

“Not on my watch.” Alyssa assumed a confident stance. “Don’t worry, Mr. Gorham. By the time the night is over, the guests will be leaving in awe.”

Jeremy’s heart skipped a beat at that.

They weren’t technically husband and wife anymore, yet she was still standing up for his family in their times of need to ensure his grandfather had a memorable birthday.

“Do you have a plan, Ms. Burton?” Ben smiled.

“Could you show me the way to the stage, Mr. Gorham?” Alyssa said, then left with Ben while Jeremy stood there, still in awe.

He blinked slowly, clenching his hands into fists. The memory of tears welling up in her eyes made it hard for him to breathe.

…

The stage was an elaborate display set in the gardens behind the mansion. The guests surrounded the front of the platform, akin to a scene straight out of The Great Gatsby.

Newton loved being surrounded by members of his family. He even invited Jonah and Landon to his table, along with many others except Becky. His table was soon filled.

On the other hand, Liana was alone at a distant table. It was as if it was an implicit sign that she would never become family. It infuriated her, but she could only sit there by herself, grinding her teeth in frustration.

Just then, her phone rang with a notification. It was from Sophia.

“There is no such thing as luck. You have to create your own opportunities. That, or sit around looking like an idiot.”

Liana refused to be treated as an idiot. She clenched her hands into fists, deciding to take action. She was going to make Alyssa pay for humiliating her tonight.

“Where’s Jeremy? And Allison?” Newton asked curiously, looking around the garden.

Just then, Jeremy walked over to their table, his face dark. He sat beside Landon, who shivered at how cold and prickly the man was.

“Jeremy, where’s Allison?” Newton asked curiously.

Jeremy scowled. “How should I know?”

His mind was too flooded with thoughts right now to think straight.

“Mr. Walsh Senior, I think Allison might have lost her way around here. I’ll go look for her,” Jonah offered, about to stand up when Jeremy spoke up.

“I don’t think that will be necessary. Since this is both of your first time in this place, you might also find yourself getting lost. Also, I know where she is. She’s safe. Don’t worry.”

Landon was taken aback upon hearing this. His grip on his wine glass nearly slipped. Did his cousin just say he knew the whereabouts of the two?

Jonah and Jeremy shot one another a look, their gazes icy.

Jonah’s eyes narrowed just the slightest, but before anything else could happen, music blared out from hidden speakers around the stage.

Large, red curtains were drawn to the sides of the stage, which attracted the guests’ attention very quickly.

Someone was on stage, wearing a turquoise blue gown and a beautiful jeweled headdress.

Jeremy found the performer surprisingly familiar.

Just then, Ben sneaked back beside Newton, looking as if he had never left.

“Oh, dear. The performance is about to start. Where is Allison?” Newton asked, not wanting Alyssa to miss out. He wanted to enjoy the performance with her.

“Sir, Ms. Allison is right here with us.” Ben grinned, then pointed at the stage. “See? There she is.”

Newton was surprised to hear that.

Jeremy stood in utter shock from his seat, eyes wide open. His chest rose and fell unevenly as sheer awe hit him like a ton of bricks.

was enough to bruise Alyssa’s back. “What the hell is wrong with you, Jeremy?”

Jeremy was fuming with rage. His grip tightened around her wrists. It was as if he was scared she might run from him. Their eyes met.

‘You’ve led again and again to me, Allison Burton, Who wouldn’t be upset?” he roared, volce raspy.

“When have I ever lied to you?” Alyssa demanded, struggling against the man’s grip. “The only reason you know nothing about me is because you never cared!

Three years, Jeremy Deckelt. I would have told you everything you wanted to know if only you had asked. But have you ever cared to ask me? Did you ever care about me?”

Jeremy’s heart skipped several beats, pounding hard in his chest.

“Do you know what i like having for breakfast? What do I enjoy doing on the weekends? What kind of music do I like? I was your wife, and I gave you my all. I paid attention to everything you did, what you loved and hated. But what about you?

“Isn’t it hilarious how you’re accusing me of lying right now when you were the cause of your own ignorance? Your own despair?” Alyssa yelled at him, eyes shoving daggers down his throat.

Shame flooded Jeremy’s being.

“Three years, and you treated me like some old toy to be put in a corner and gather dust. Every day every single day, I prayed you would come and talk to me, to care about me even a little bit, I would have bared my soul to you.

“But where did that get me, hm? All I got in the end was was you abandoning me for someone else.”

Abandon?

Jeremy trembled slightly as he watched Alyssa’s face turn sad and pale. His heart clenched terribly at the sight.

He recalled he was the one who had abandoned her back then. He remembered how sad and in despair Alyssa was when he forced her to sign their divorce papers.

She had been so heartbroken then. How could she be so carefree now?

“Thanks to your cruelty, the disappointment I felt has grown into despair, and any shred of hope I had left had permanently died out. I no longer want anything to do with you. All I want is you out of my life,” Alyssa growled out, her eyes nearly bloodshot. The look she had on her lace made Jeremy shiver.

Lies!

Jeremy flinched as If someone had stabbed him in the chest. “Have you really given up on me, Allison? You must be lying.”

“Lying? Hah!” Allison snorted. “Why would I waste my time trying to lie to you?”

Jeremy couldn’t help it anymore. “Do you really like Jonah Taylor?”

“Yes,” came the firm answer.

“No, I don’t believe you. You’re only with him so that you can get back at me. You’re angry at me. You’re angry at me because of the divorce!” Jeremy yelled, then leaned in close to Alyssa, their noses brushing against one another’s.

Alyssa jerked away. “Are you out of your mind? Go see a therapist or something, and leave me alone!”

Jeremy then gripped her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Do you Do you hate me so much, Allison? So much so that you’re willing to give yourself to someone you don’t love, all to make me upset?”

“Upset? Oh, I am the furthest thing away from upset.” Alyssa grinned. “He treats me like a goddess, unlike you. Every single day of being with you fell like a prison.

“You really think I’d waste my time getting back at you? Bah! Do you have any idea how much I’d degrade myself doing that? You’re goddamn proud and one hell of a Jealous peacock! I should have seen through you!” Alyssa gritted her teeth.

Pain shot through Jeremys near. Marrying you was the worst mistake of my life!

Right then and there, Alyssa felt like something vital inside her had snapped into two.

Those six words. “the worst mistake of my life,” echoed in her mind.

She had given him everything, her love, her heart, her soul for three whole years. What was the result? Nothing but another stain to his family’s name.

Why did you do this to yourself, Alyssa? Why?

Jeremy watched as her eyes slowly welled up with tears, and her complexion turned pale. He quickly let go of her hands, realizing he had misspoken terribly.

He hadn’t meant to. Why couldn’t he stop himself?

If it was what he genuinely felt, then whatever, but-

“Mr. Walsh? Ms. Burton? Just then, Newton’s secretary, Ben Gorham, spotted them.

Alyssa quickly moved away from Jeremy, forcing a smile on her face. “What are you doing all the way here. Mr. Gorham? I thought you were with Grandpa?”
