“Okay.Have a good rest.We’ll leave now.”

Then, she dragged Gilbert out of the room without asking for his opinion, offering the young couple some privacy.

Gilbert was annoyed.

“Why did you drag me out here? I have more to talk to Zack about.”

“Gilbert, were you planning to make him break up with Janet? “

She laid out the truth—she knew his thoughts well. His silence was an admission.

Feeling troubled, she reminded him, “Look how Zack is protecting Janet. You should know he doesn’t mind taking on the trouble for her.I think he’d only feel bad for not protecting her better. He won’t listen to what you say to him. It’s useless.”

She deliberately persuaded Gilbert to give up on talking Zack out of the relationship and allowing him to pick his path.

Plus, she didn’t want the brothers to be upset at each other.

Gilbert knew her intention and let out a long sigh.He stared at her and then at Eustace.

With a shake of his head, he said, “Whatever.I’ll let it be.You never listened to me in the past, and he won’t listen to me now.”

All of a sudden, he felt like a wicked stepparent in novels, one who was vocally against the protagonists.

It was unnecessary to upset everyone.

How Could He Say It’s Worth It?

Danika could tell that Gilbert was upset.

She quickly added, “Gilbert, I know you’re doing this in Zack’s best interest. But he’s an adult now.We can’t make decisions for him.”

He merely waved his hand.

“That’s enough.You should leave.”

Then, he trudged ahead and disappeared from her sight.

Perhaps, it was time to have a life of his own instead of focusing all his attention on Danika and Zack.

As the eldest, he always acted like a father, worrying they’d date partners who were unsuitable for them.

She was woeful at the sight of Gilbert leaving.

“Was I too harsh to him just now?”

Eustace gave her a back hug and said affirmatively, “No.You were right. It’s Gilbert who needs to think about it.He puts himself in the role of a father by disciplining you.But in truth, he’s not that much older than both of you, and he never had the experience of being a father. He doesn’t have more life experience compared to you. You’re not at fault. He’s the one who has confused his role.”

Despite that, Danika didn’t feel better at all and wallowed ina low mood.

Seeing that, Eustace hurriedly changed the topic.

” Danika, don’t you have any pity for me? I haven’t had dinner, and I’m starving.”

His stomach cooperatively rumbled at the same time.It struck her that they had not had dinner before arriving at the hospital.

In fact, they haven’t ate any food since alighting the plane.

“Sorry for making you starve with me.” She looked sheepish.

“Let’s go and have a nice meal.I’ll buy you dinner.”

“Sure.I’ll eat you out of house and home, my wife-to-be!”

He chuckled and held her hand as they left the hospital.

Meanwhile, things weren’t as harmonious between Zack and Janet in his room.

“Janet, what’s wrong? Why haven’t you said a word?”

He noticed that she had been silent ever since he woke up.She refused to speak, and he grew concerned.

“Are you in shock? Don’t worry.I promise I won’t let this happen again.”

She finally lifted her head and stared at him.

“How could you promise that? You weren’t even the cause behind this incident.”

“Janet…”

“You had nothing to do with it and didn’t have to risk yourself to save me.You almost lost your life.Got it?”

Fuming, she glared at him with misty eyes.

That caught him off guard, but he quickly collected himself.

“That won’t happen.I’m going to be with you forever.I’m not losing my life.”

All the words she wanted to say to him were stuck in her throat.

Tears streamed down her face, sending Zack into a panic.

He wanted to wipe her tears, only to realize that he was physically unable to do so.

“Janet, don’t cry. You’re making me feel bad.”

He had no idea why she cried, but he was upset at the sight of it.She wiped the corner of her eyes to stop her tears from falling.

“I think you’re foolish. Is it even worth it to risk yourself to save me?”

“Of course it is,” he said without hesitation.

He was willing to sacrifice himself for her safety, but she thought he was a fool.

How could he say that it was worth it? She felt that she wasn’t worth his sacrifice.

At that thought, she cried even louder.

Zack grew more nervous.

“Janet, stop crying! Did someone bully you? Tell me, and I’ll teach them a lesson.”

Join Me, Then?

Janet shook her head while crying.

“No one bullied me.”

No one dared to bully her with Zack by her side.

He badly wanted to hug his inconsolable lover, but he was unable to move and was forced to watch on helplessly.

“Janet, don’t cry.I can’t even give you a hug right now.”

She cried even louder at his remark.

“Why are you…so foolish?”

“I’m not foolish. If I were a fool, I wouldn’t have come across a lovely girl like you,” he answered with a chuckle, feeling like the happiest man on earth at that moment.

She felt his love, but the love had become such a suffocating burden for her.She loved him too, but she believed she wasn’t a good match for him.It took her a while to calm down. She patted her eyes dry.

* Zack, I’m sorry. You got hurt because of me.” She thought an apology was warranted.

“Janet, we are one.We don’t owe each other anything. If I were the one in trouble, I believe you would have rushed over to save me.”

He didn’t need her apology because she wasn’t at fault.

Still, she felt bad for him.

“My parents…”

“Don’t overthink now. When I’m discharged, let’s pay them a visit. We might figure out a way to deal with them.”

Growing up without parents, Zack had no idea about the family dynamics between Janet and her parents.

It was said that a parent’s love for the child was universal, but he didn’t feel that Janet’s parents had any love for her.

Maybe there were indeed parents who had no affection for their children, and Janet’s parents were an example.

Well, his parents too…

Had they loved him, they wouldn’t have abandoned him and made him an orphan.

Janet shook her head in horror when she heard the suggestion to visit her parents.

“No! You shouldn’t go!”

She could picture the words that her parents would say to him.
