Stephanie struggled to lift Danika from the bed and put her in the wheelchair before pushing her toward the ICU.

When they reached there, Danika saw Vincent standing guard at the door.

“Miss Zellweger,” Vincent greeted, surprised to see her.

His gaze fell on her wheelchair, and he quickly understood what was going on. “Mr. Quincey’s condition is currently stable, and he should be fine. You should get some rest.”

“I know. I just wanted to come and take a look.” Everyone told her to rest well, but knowing that Eustace got hurt so severely because he shielded her from the impact, how could she rest?

Stephanie pushed her to the door of the ICU. Because the window on the door was at a standing eye level, Danika couldn’t see anything while sitting in a wheelchair.

“Steph, can you help me up?” She still wanted to stand up and take a look.

Stephanie was helpless, but she had to help Danika stand up so that she could see Eustace.

Right then, Eustace was still wearing an oxygen mask, but from the monitoring machine, Danika could see that all his vital signs were stable. Breathing a sigh of relief, she sat back in her wheelchair.

“Vincent, can you tell me what happened after the collision? Who brought us to the hospital?” She wasn’t in a mood to ask about all these. But after she saw that Eustace was fine, she could direct her energy toward figuring out who could be responsible.

Vincent didn’t hide anything from her and told her the truth. “A passerby brought you and Mr. Quincey to the hospital. The driver who caused the accident died on the spot and was suspected of drunk driving, so this collision is temporarily classified as an accident.’

“Drunk driving? As if!” Danika sneered.

“Don’t worry. I’ve already sent someone to look into this. I’ll make sure to investigate that driver thoroughly.” Vincent held the same opinion; he didn’t think it was an accident. Although Eustace hadn’t woken up yet, he’d taken the initiative to arrange for someone to investigate the matter.

Give Him Some Time

Stephanie pushed Danika back to her ward, and with great effort, she managed to get Danika back in bed.

“Ah, I’m so tired/ she complained.

“You’ve worked hard, Steph. Thank you/ Danika said, feeling a bit embarrassed.

“Now you know how hard it was for me. When you asked for my help before, why didn’t it cross your mind how tiresome it was?” Stephanie questioned irritably, feeling a little annoyed.

Danika chuckled, knowing that Stephanie wasn’t really angry. “How’s your relationship with Leonard going? You haven’t contacted me in a long time.”

On the day Max and Jade got married, Stephanie and Leonard got together as well. After that day, the two of them hadn’t seen each other. It had been several months since then, and now it was summer.

“It’s going okay. I didn’t know how busy work at the police station could get. But after becoming his girlfriend, I know that better than anyone else now.” Stephanie couldn’t help but complain whenever she talked about Leonard.

“You know, they don’t really have normal vacations. Even if they take a break, their phones are never off, and they might get called back in the middle of a date/ she said. She had experienced it several times before and was understandably slightly salty about it.

Danika could understand, as it was similar to a doctor’s job. “I know. You have to understand that this is the nature of his job.”

“I know. If I didn’t understand, I would’ve said goodbye to him long ago,” Stephanie replied. She was just slightly displeased, as she’d always wanted a normal relationship. It was difficult to have that with Leonard, just as it had been with Paul.

Danika could see Stephanie’s frustration and advised, “Give him some time. I believe he can balance his work and his time with you better. Besides, Leonard is so capable. When he rises up in rank, he won’t have to work so hard, and he’ll have more time to spend with you.”

Stephanie sighed. She knew all this; she was merely a little discontented and wanted to vent a little. It wasn’t like she really wanted to break up with Leonard.

“He’s not in Bardoff City these days. He said he’s arresting someone in another city. If he were here, he could help you with this matter/ Stephanie said.

Danika held Stephanie’s hand and said, ‘Don’t be upset. You have me, don’t you?”

“You?” Stephanie sneered. “I know how busy you’ve been with Eustace these days. Do you have time to care about me?”

“Just contact me, and I’ll come whenever you need me,” Danika promised.

Stephanie was skeptical, but she didn’t say anything. Despite that, she felt a lot better inside. That night, Stephanie and Danika talked a lot until they slowly fell asleep in the early hours of the morning.

The next day, Danika learned that Eustace’s condition had stabilized, and he’d been transferred to a regular hospital room. Almost instantly, she asked Stephanie to push her over there.

After a night of rest, Danika was able to get off the bed herself, albeit with difficulty. It greatly reduced Stephanie’s burden, so she had no reason to refuse.

Inside Eustace’s hospital room, Vincent was taking care of him. When he saw Danika arrive, he stepped aside and went to wait outside. Stephanie pushed Danika to his bedside and tactfully left the hospital room as well, giving them space.

After such a major event, Danika had a lot to say to Eustace. However, he was still unconscious, so no matter what she said, he couldn’t hear her. Even so, Danika didn’t care. Her gaze fell on Eustace’s face, and her eyes instantly turned red.

“Eustace, you bastard! Who asked you to shield me? I’m not a delicate flower in a greenhouse. What makes you think I need your protection?”

Compared to Eustace being in a coma, she would rather be the one lying in bed right now. She hoped in vain that Eustace hadn’t chosen to shield her and end up in this state.

You’re Really Awake!

Danika spent a long time in the hospital room, talking a lot, but it was always the same thing-she hoped he would wake up soon. As long as he woke up, she was willing to promise him anything.

After leaving Eustace’s hospital room, Danika looked at Vincent and asked,” Vincent, can you help me put an extra bed in his room?”

“Miss Zellweger…”

“He’s my boyfriend, so I should take care of him.’ On top of that, Eustace was injured so grievously because he protected her from the worst.

When he was in the ICU, Danika couldn’t take care of him. But now that he was in a normal hospital room, she wouldn’t miss the opportunity to do so.

Vincent could see Danika’s determination, so he could only agree. “Okay.”

Then, Vincent went to make arrangements. Stephanie was still there, feeling somewhat speechless. “Eustace will be fine. You don’t need to take care of him personally.”

“I know. I just want to put my mind at ease.” If they weren’t in the same room and something happened to Eustace, she wouldn’t know.

Stephanie knew she couldn’t persuade Danika to do otherwise. ‘Do as you wish, Danika. I can see that you’ve completely fallen for him.’

Danika was startled, then she broke into a smile. In fact, what Stephanie had said wasn’t wrong. Perhaps she’d fallen in love with Eustace a long time ago, but she had refused to admit it.

Soon, there was an extra bed in Eustace’s hospital room. Danika moved from her ward to be with him in his room. There, she could see him at all times.

“Steph, you’ve worked hard taking care of me these past few days. I’m almost recovered now, so you can go back,” Danika said.

Stephanie frowned, unwilling to leave. “You’re not fully recovered. It’s obvious that you still have trouble standing up and walking.”

“It’s okay. There are nurses in the hospital; besides. I’ve moved here. How can you take care of me?” Previously, Stephanie had shared a bed with her at night, but now that she’d moved into Eustace’s room, it wasn’t appropriate.

Hearing her words, Stephanie didn’t insist any further. “Okay, I won’t disturb your alone time with him.’

“Go back. I’ll treat you to a scrumptious meal when I get discharged.” Danika smiled at her, grateful for Stephanie’s care these past few days.

Soon, Stephanie left, and Vincent didn’t come in to disturb them. Danika lay in her bed and could see Eustace beside her.

“Eustace, you have to wake up soon,” she whispered.

As if he’d heard Danika’s words, Eustace woke up that evening.

His injury was much more severe than Danika’s, so when he woke up, he couldn’t do anything except blink his eyes. He couldn’t even control his hands.

“Vincent…” he called out softly. Although he didn’t see anyone, he believed Vincent was probably watching over him in the hospital.

Danika was half asleep, but because she was close by, she heard Eustace’s voice and immediately woke up.

“Eustace? Are you awake?” Danika wasn’t sure if he’d opened his eyes from her position.

When Eustace heard Danika’s voice, he was stunned and unsure. He turned his head with great effort and saw that there was another bed in the room, and Danika was lying on that bed at the moment.

“You’re really awake!” Danika was very happy and immediately wanted to get out of bed, but the pain in her leg prevented her from going over to Eustace.

Eustace noticed this and quickly said, “Don’t move. I’ll ask Vincent to come in.” With that, Eustace pressed the call button on the bed.

Not a Fool

Vincent quickly came in with a doctor, and after a brief check, it was determined that Eustace’s injuries had improved; at least, he was no longer in critical condition. However, he needed to lie in bed for a while.

After the doctors finished their examination, they quickly left. Vincent poured Eustace a glass of water to let him moisten his lips. “Mr. Quincey, you can’t eat yet. You have to bear with it for now.”

“Understood. You’re dismissed for now,’ Eustace said, voice slightly hoarse.

Vincent got up and left, leaving only Danika and Eustace in the ward. At this point, they could finally take a good look at each other.

Both of them were sitting halfway up against the headboard of the bed. They wanted to get closer to each other but couldn’t. They could only smile wryly.

“Why did you come to my room?” Eustace was the first to speak, with a hint of teasing in his voice, trying to ease the somewhat oppressive atmosphere between them.

Danika didn’t answer but asked him, “Why did you protect me then? Weren’t you afraid of getting hurt yourself?*

“It’s better for me to get hurt instead of you.” That was Eustace’s first thought at the time. As long as Danika was okay, that was all he cared about.

Danika pursed her lips and remained silent.

Eustace’s answer was so straightforward and affirmative, with almost no hesitation. Danika could tell that, to him, her life was more important than his own.

But…

Danika couldn’t help but ask herself, could she do what Eustace did if she was the one driving the car? She wasn’t sure.

She wasn’t someone who was driven by love to do all sorts of unimaginable things. She was very rational and always thought that no one was more important than herself.

Now…she felt a little guilty.

She looked at Eustace and said, “Eustace, what if I can’t love you as much as you love me?”
