Filed to story: The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion
“Evan, why do you have to do this? Do you know how difficult it is for me?” No matter what, they had grown up together. Even if they couldn’t be together in the future, they should still be the best of friends.
But now…
Danika couldn’t treat him as a friend anymore.
Evan sighed and decided not to keep justifying himself. “When did you find out?”
“The day you suggested I go abroad with you, Eustace found me and introduced me to someone. He was one of your former subordinates.” Since the truth was out, Danika didn’t see the need to hide anything further.
Evan understood and sighed bitterly. “Trey. So Eustace managed to pull off whatever he’d tried to do, after all.”
Trey didn’t die and ended up confessing to Eustace about him. Evan pondered the turn of events for a moment and realized that sending Howard to kill Trey was probably a mistake. If Howard hadn’t gone to kill him, Trey wouldn’t have confessed, and Danika might still be in the dark.
He’d been too afraid. As long as Trey was still alive and in Eustace’s hands, he couldn’t completely relax.
Sorry to Have Disappointed You
“I also planted a bug under your hospital bed.” Danika didn’t hide anything. She chose to be frank to let Evan know that she knew everything and that he shouldn’t lie to her anymore.
Evan was stunned. He wasn’t expecting that. Then, he laughed helplessly.” As expected, once you have suspicions, you can quickly find evidence on your own.”
When she trusted him, she really trusted him with all her heart; once the seed of doubt was planted, she would do everything to investigate.
“If you already knew, why did you agree to go abroad with me? And why did you come to the airport with me today?” Evan didn’t understand why Danika did that. She should have just confronted him directly, then they might not have come to the airport today.
Danika smiled bitterly in response. “I just thought that maybe you would feel guilty and tell me everything before leaving.”
In the end, she thought too highly of him.
“I’m sorry for disappointing you,” Evan said.
In fact, he never intended to tell Danika the truth from the beginning. He planned to find Julian and make up an excuse to justify his recovery. By that time, even if Danika felt it quite incredulous, she would still think it was some kind of a miracle. Moreover, they would’ve been living abroad for a long time by then. Eustace wouldn’t be able to come between them. They might have already become a couple when that happened.
He had great expectations for the future, but now everything was ruined. Danika choosing to speak out at this time meant that she had no intention of going abroad with him.
Danika stood up, looked at him, and couldn’t find the right words to express her complicated emotions. “Evan, I really thought of you as a brother.”
“But I don’t want to be your brother. I don’t want to be like Gilbert, who clearly loves you but has to suppress his feelings for fear of damaging your relationship as siblings.” Gilbert could do it, but he couldn’t.
Perhaps because he left early, the time he spent with Danika was not long, so his feelings for her were more of a romantic relationship than a sibling one.
Danika’s face dropped hearing him say that. “Do you know what love is? If you really love me, you should understand that love requires restraint.”
Danika looked at Evan, disappointment written all over her face. In turn, Evan’s face paled, and he remained silent.
“You should go back to where you belong,” Danika said. She didn’t intend to hold him accountable or responsible for anything. The only thing she wanted was to expose Evan and let him know that it was all over.
“What about you?” Evan asked.
“This is where I belong. Don’t you understand?” Danika looked at him. She found it ridiculous for him to still expect her to leave with him.
Evan smiled bitterly. Of course, he understood it was impossible for her to follow him; he just refused to accept reality.
“Are you really not willing to give me a chance? We can be happy together.” He promised that he would treat Danika well as long as she gave him a chance.
Unfortunately, it meant nothing to Danika. “Evan, please leave when I’m still willing to consider you my friend.”
“Danika-“
“We can board the plane now.” Howard walked over quickly. He could tell that something was wrong between the two upon approaching.
He thought, “Oh no, are they arguing at a time like this?” “Howard, you should help Evan board the plane.” Danika looked at Howard and then turned to leave.
She hadn’t packed anything. Her suitcases were all empty.
I’ll Be Back, Eustace
“Miss Zellweger, the boarding gate is over there!” Howard shouted when he saw Danika walking in the wrong direction.
Evan grabbed him and shook his head. “She won’t come with us.”
Howard was stunned, trying to process what was going on. Just as he was in a state of confusion, a gunshot rang out, and a bullet hit Evan in his left chest!
“Boss!”
“Evan!”
Danika heard the gunshot and turned to see Evan getting hit. She immediately rushed over to him. At that moment, more gunfire sounded, and quite a few people joined the gunfight.
“Damn it! They were waiting for this chance!” Howard cursed. After all this time, he thought the people who held a grudge against Evan had given up. It turned out they had been waiting to ambush him there.
Danika didn’t know what was going on; she only knew that Evan needed to be taken to the hospital immediately.
“Howard, cover me. I’ll take Evan and leave first.” Danika looked around at the chaos and thought it was unwise to stay there any longer.
Howard nodded, and Danika pushed Evan out of the VIP lounge. Howard provided cover, and soon a few more people joined them-they were Evan’s remaining subordinates. Most of the others had already gone abroad, and only a few stayed behind to protect him. They thought they would get to leave soon, but none of them expected something like this to happen.
Danika was about to exit via the corridor with Evan but was stopped by Howard. “Miss Zellweger, board the plane!”
Danika frowned, “I’m not going abroad with you. If you want to save Evan, let him come with me to Bardoff Hospital.”
Just as she thought Howard would compromise, he suddenly turned the gun toward her and threatened, “Miss Zellweger, the boss likes you, but I don’t. I would have killed you long ago if it hadn’t been for his sake. Now, listen to me and board the plane!”
Since their enemies had already taken action, they would not continue to stay in the country. With only so few of them here, staying behind meant death. As for Danika, she would have to come with them too. Otherwise, Evan would just go back to her right away after he woke up.
Danika gritted her teeth in fury. “Howard!”
“If you don’t go, we’ll all die here today!” Howard made it clear that if she didn’t board the plane, none of them would be leaving, which left Danika unsure of what to do.
Evan had already passed out, and the bullet wound was still bleeding. “He needs to be saved now. If you make him board the plane, you’re letting him die!”
“You don’t need to worry about that!” Howard retorted coldly. Since he dared to let Evan board the plane, he was confident that he wouldn’t have any problems.
At that moment, another person rushed in—it was Eustace. He wasn’t worried about Danika at first because he knew she wouldn’t leave with Evan.
However, he still felt uneasy and came to the airport. He just didn’t expect to witness such a scene.
“Danika!” Eustace saw Danika being held at gunpoint by Howard and became furious. “Let her go! I promise to let Evan leave safely.” His men were on their way, and as long as Howard released Danika, he could ensure the safe departure of Evan and his team.
Unfortunately, Howard didn’t care about what he said.
“Miss Zellweger, do you really want to watch him die? The longer you delay, the higher the chance of his death,” Howard said to her.
Danika looked at the unconscious Evan and couldn’t bear to leave him to die just like that. So, when Howard forcibly pushed her toward the boarding gate, she didn’t resist.
“Danika! Don’t go!” Eustace followed behind, but Howard’s men fired at him mercilessly. Since they were leaving anyway, they weren’t afraid to shoot at Eustace.
Danika smiled helplessly and shook her head at him, indicating that he shouldn’t take the risk.
‘Til be back, Eustace.”
Far From Over
Eustace didn’t know whether Danika would really come back. He only knew that when he saw Danika being forcefully taken onto the plane by Howard, he was completely devastated. He regretted not following them from the beginning. If he had, Howard wouldn’t have threatened Danika, and she wouldn’t have been taken away.
“Why the fuck didn’t I follow her here?!’ Eustace questioned himself in agony. He believed in Danika and thought she could handle it. Besides, Danika didn’t let him come with her, saying it wasn’t necessary.
When Vincent and his men rushed to the airport, Eustace was kneeling on the floor in despair. He was in such a miserable state that Vincent felt sorry for him. Gunshots could still be heard once in a while, but things seemed to have calmed down considerably. The people who had come for Evan must have left since their target had been Evan and not Eustace. They didn’t really want to step on Eustace’s toes within the country.
“Mr. Faust…” Vincent approached Eustace, whose face was obscured as he was holding it in his hands. At that moment, he didn’t know how to console his employer.
To his surprise, Eustace calmed down quickly and ordered, “Find out where Evan’s plane is heading.” Even if they had to go to outer space, he would find Evan and bring him back!
“Okay, I’ll go check it now!” Vincent nodded and breathed a sigh of relief. He was really afraid that the incident would crush Eustace.
The gunfight ended abruptly as if it had never happened, and everyone went about their own business without mentioning the matter. But they all knew it was far from over.
At this point, on the plane, Danika finally learned they were on a private plane with all kinds of facilities on board. Howard had specially arranged for a doctor to be on standby. That was why he insisted that Danika board the plane.
Although the equipment on the plane was limited, there was no problem stopping the bleeding and saving Evan’s life for the time being.
“I’m curious why you suddenly changed your mind, Miss Zellweger?” After making sure that Evan wasn’t in danger, Howard walked up to Danika and looked at her coldly.
Danika glanced at him and answered indifferently, “I know everything.”
Howard was stunned but quickly understood what she meant. “You know everything?”
“Obviously. Did you think your plan was perfect?” Danika asked sarcastically. After knowing everything, she couldn’t look at Howard the same way as before, especially since he’d pointed a gun at her and forced her onto the plane.
Upon hearing that, Howard relaxed instead. “Good to know. I was just worried about how to come up with excuses for Boss’ recovery after we arrived. Now I don’t have to put in that effort.”
Covering up a lie would require countless other lies. Howard was already tired of it, and now, he didn’t have to keep it up any longer. He felt much more at ease.
“Now that you know, you better behave yourself. The boss likes you so much, so he won’t hurt you. When you arrive at our territory, only good times await you.” After all these years, she was still the only person Evan liked. Howard wasn’t fond of her, but he wouldn’t harm her in any way for Evan’s sake.
Danika sneered. “Do you think I’ll just stay put when I know everything?”
“I’m not joking when I said you should behave. Do you think you can still escape from us?” Danika might have a chance if they were in Clusia because it wasn’t their territory. But now that they had left, no matter what Danika’s identity was back in her country, she had no power abroad.
