“Evan, please don’t say that.I moved here to take care of you in the first place,”

Danika comforted him.

As for Eustace…well, someone else would take care of him.

Evan’s heart was bursting with joy, but his emotion wasn’t reflected on his face.

“I was asking Howard if I made the wrong decision in letting you move in.You have a life, and it’s unfair for you to waste your time on a useless man like me.”

She seemed to disagree with him on that.

“Evan, you should never refer to yourself in that way. You’re not useless! Yes, I moved in with you, but I still go to work every day.My life hasn’t changed. And Howard is the one who’s taking care of you mostly.”

Although she wasn’t close to Howard, she could tell he was extremely loyal to Evan.

“Even so, moving in must have affected you in some way. That makes me feel bad.”

He hung his head, looking contrite.

The more he blamed himself, the more upset she felt.

“Evan, I would have been dead if it were not for you.Helping you is nothing much.”

“How about…you and Eustace?” he finally blurted out.

He muttered with a painful smile when she sank into silence, “You would have been with him if it were not for me.”

Of course, Danika couldn’t date Eustace because she had chosen to move in and take care of Evan.

No man would be fine with his girlfriend being a live-in caregiver for another man.

Even if Eustace didn’t mind, Danika would never allow that to happen.

She smiled, looking unbothered.

“I’m not concerned about that for now.I only want you to get better soon.”

“Danika…”

“Evan, that’s enough. You need rest,” she cut him off, but more so because she struggled to answer his hypothetical questions.

Without the kidnapping, Evan wouldn’t have been bound to a wheelchair, and she would have dated Eustace.

However, facing the unalterable reality, she would rather plan for the future instead of wasting time on the “what-ifs”.

Unbeknownst to her, he was satisfied with her answer.

One thing was for sure—she wouldn’t date Eustace before Evan recovered.

That was good enough for Evan.

He had been losing sleep over his worries that Danika would date Eustace.

If that happened, persuading her to go abroad with him would be more difficult.

Danika requested that he wait in the living room while she prepared the soup in the kitchen.

Staring at the soup in the pot, she was suddenly reminded of Eustace.

What would he be doing at the moment? She assumed he would be working on his recovery and taking his meals regularly.

Her worry was not without reason because she remembered him as a workaholic.

He’d be fine if someone was keeping an eye on him, but without supervision, he’d be skipping meals.

She decided to call him later and remind him to take care of himself.

At that time, she had no idea Vincent was forced to help Eustace out of the hospital.

When she was preparing the soup for Evan, Eustace had moved back to the villa next door, but he didn’t inform her because he knew she’d protest and be upset.

To avoid upsetting her, he moved back quietly in order to not alert her.

Vincent was also at the end of his wits—he had no authority to stop his boss from doing so, and he had no choice but to take his orders.

Call Me a Busybody

Eustace thought he could hide the truth from Danika if he didn’t use his study at home.

Little did he know that Danika could see the light from his bedroom even though she didn’t have a direct view from her bedroom.

Without hesitation, she called him.

“Danika, what’s wrong?”

He jumped a little when he saw the incoming call but calmed down before picking up.

“Eustace, where are you now?” she seethed.

He silently gulped, thinking, “Is she back at the hospital?”

That was unlikely to happen because Evan wouldn’t let her leave after getting her to return.

With that in mind, he tried his best to keep himself together.

“Why? Are you in the hospital?”

“No.I’m home,” she replied.

He felt relieved knowing she probably didn’t learn about his discharge. He said, “I’m at the hospital. Why? Do you want to keep me company?”

He told a bare-faced lie without fear since they were talking over the phone.

She smirked.

“Really? Did you not sneak out of the hospital?”

“Of course I didn’t.Since I’d promise you to take care of my health, I will never do anything irresponsible,”

Eustace bluffed confidently.

Danika would have fallen for the lie if she hadn’t seen the light from his bedroom. She clutched her phone as she tethered on the brink of rage.

“Eustace, do you take me as a fool? Who turned on the lights in your bedroom if you’re not home?”

He fell silent, wondering if it’d work if he rushed to turn off the lights.

It was clearly too late to do so.

She chastised him, “Eustace! You’re such a hypocrite. Why are you kicking up all these troubles?”

She huffed as she choked on anger.

He didn’t need to see her face to picture her being angry.

“Danika, I didn’t like staying at the hospital because you weren’t with me.”

“Huh.”

She did not believe in a word he uttered.

“Are you telling me you had never been to the hospital before meeting me?”

“Yeah.” He nodded.

“Eustace Quincey!” she bellowed.

“That was true, though.I had a family doctor at home.”

Since he never caught any serious illness, he never needed to go to the hospital, and a family doctor would suffice. She finally understood his words and said sarcastically, Oh, shall I hire a family doctor for you?”

“No, that’s fine.I’ll only need you to check on me.”

He believed that he’d recover in no time with Danika around.Dumbfounded by his answers, she said sternly, “Eustace, I’m not joking with you.If you can’t be bothered about your health, I can’t help you either.”

“Danika…”

“Call me a busybody.Whatever.”

She knew that no amount of persuasion would make him go to the hospital.

He started panicking when he sensed that she was truly angry at him.

“Sorry, Danika.

I didn’t mean to lie to you.”

“Whatever.”
