After all, it’s not like he hadn’t borne witness to how intelligent the man was when it came to these decisions.
“Go on then.”
Eustace waved him off.He knew Vincent only worried because of how big a threat the Quinceys were.
But to Eustace, they were nothing more than empty shells, long rotten within.
Best to burn out all the maggots inside before taking over as head of the family.
After Vincent left, Eustace went back to work, but not before texting Danika that he wouldn’t be back tonight.
He asked her to eat dinner and get to bed early, but he never received a response after.
Unbeknownst to him, Danika hadn’t eaten the dinner he had sent due to the large portion of food Evan had already made for her.
The man was currently washing the dishes in the sink while Danika awkwardly scratched her nose.
“Now I really don’t want to have you over anymore. What kind of guest cooks for their host and even washes the dishes after?”
Evan didn’t mind.
“No need to be so polite. We’re friends, no?”
Danika fidgeted at the side, wanting to help but finding no means to.
“You’d make a good husband and father, Evan.” Evan paused slightly.
He smiled.
“Really? That’s the first time someone’s said that to me.”
“Really.”
Danika nodded surely.
Based on her observation, it wasn’t Evan’s first time doing it.He likely cooked and cleaned by himself too.
To Danika, it was a sure sign of a man who’d never let his wife and children get the brunt of life.
“Why don’t you consider being with a man like me, hm?” Evan teased all of a sudden.
Danika’s face instantly fell.
“Evan—“
“Alright, I’m done with the dishes.I’ll visit you another time. You won’t shut me out then, right?”
Evan cut her off, not wanting to hear what might come out of her mouth next.
Danika swallowed what she’d wanted to say.
“Of course not.We’re family.”
Upon hearing that, an upset expression flared across Evan’s face before it quickly disappeared.
Dying Young
Only after seeing Evan off did Danika spot Eustace’s messages. She sent him some texts in response, but the next second, the man was already giving her a call.
“Had dinner yet?” Eustace asked, exhaustion evident in his tone. He was still busy with work, it seemed.
Danika hummed in assent.
“Mhrn. What about you? You’re not skipping meals again, are you?”
Eustace didn’t dare answer. He did skip dinner; he’d forgotten about it due to work.
Danika sighed.
“You need to take care of your health, Eustace.Aren’t you worried about dying young?”
She didn’t bother sugarcoating her words. She’d seen too many cases of people overworking themselves to the point of being hospitalized for passing out.
Seeing Eustace make the same mistake upset her.
“I wasn’t worried back then.Now I am.”
Eustace truly hadn’t been worried before he met Danika. He lived life alone then, after all.
But now, the thought of never being with Danika again only pained him.
Danika didn’t get what he was implying, however. Then regulate your work-life balance.Don’t overwork yourself, please.”
“I will. It’s mainly because there’s no one waiting for me at home, though.”
Danika fell silent.
“I’d love to come home to a hot meal too.Sadly, there’s no one to make dinner for me at home or spend the days with me.So, I might as well focus on work,” Eustace continued, sounding quite sad.
Danika pursed her lips.
“But no one would go to your lengths of overworking.”
All that came through the call was a sigh from Eustace.
“When are you coming home?” Danika asked.”
“I still have some —“
“What did I just tell you, Eustace Quincey? Were you paying attention at all?”
Danika huffed angrily.
Waste of her breath! “Alright, alright.I’ll pack my things up right now.”
Eustace assured her, not wanting to upset her further.
He did have work to finish, but he didn’t want to worry Danika further, either.
Nothing was more important than she was.
“Good.Come over for dinner,” Danika instructed.
“Okay.”
Eustace smiled, feeling warm to the core.He ended the call and swiftly finished reading the documents on his table, signing them before finally leaving his office.
The countless employees still at work were surprised to see their boss leaving so early.
He was known to be a workaholic, after all.
The moment Eustace left the office, Luke got word of his whereabouts and had his men track Eustace, wanting to see if they could find a weak spot.
But unfortunately for them, Eustace only returned to what seemed like his apartment.
They didn’t know Danika lived right across from him in the same building.
Wow.Polite.
Eustace went right up to Danika’s apartment the moment he came up to his floor.
“Come on in.Dinner’s ready.”
Danika stepped aside to let him in.
“Did you make these?” Eustace asked in surprise, seeing the food on the table.
“No, no. These are the foods you ordered.”
Danika didn’t intend to lie. She had merely heated up the food Eustace sent over.
Eustace frowned.
“You haven’t eaten?”
“I have.” Danika met his gaze, then looked away.
Evan came to visit after hearing I have my own place outside. We had dinner.”
Eustace’s expression instantly turned ugly.So that was why Danika didn’t reply to his texts.
“It was just dinner, nothing special.Don’t overthink it,” Danika explained.
Unfortunately, Eustace was already on the jealousy train.
“Really? What I’m concerned about is if you’re the one underestimating things.”
He was sure Danika knew the kind of expectations Evan held for her.
