“Why don’t you cook later? It’s still early.” Danika asked.

She’d actually just had lunch. Her original plan was to nap, though she’d long lost her sleepiness due to Janet Hale’s situation and partially because of Evan’s presence.

“You’re right. It isn’t even the afternoon yet.”

Evan set down the washed vegetables and went to the living room. He scanned his surroundings, asking, ‘What made you want to move out from Zellweger Castle?”

“It’s too far from the hospital.Plus, I don’t like being the only one there. It’s such a big space.”

Her apartment was far more cozy than Zellweger Castle, though the latter was constantly filled with housework.Evan nodded in understanding.

“What about Mr.Zellweger? Any news of when he’ll be back?”

“He says he’s found some leads, though I dunno if he’s telling the truth.” It’d beer. a couple days since she’d spoken with her father.

She wasn’t sure what he was up to either.

Evan sighed worriedly.

“It’s been so long. There’s bound to be difficulty relocating your mother.”

“Yeah.Sadly Dad doesn’t plan on giving up, so I’m not going to stop him either He’s better off doing this than moping about at home.”

Even if Graham’s efforts ended with nothing, he’d still find closure in the fact that he tried.

“That’s true.Sometimes hope is what keeps people alive.”

A person in despair could soon find himself in the deepest of abysses.

Evan himself made it through most of his years of living with the little bit of hope he had, too Danika got him a glass of water.

“I hope you don’t mind.I don’t have much stock in the pantry save for water.”

“Ah, no need to other.I don’t mind.”

At least, not with Danika. He hoped she felt the same, of course.

Danika sat back down, suddenly at a loss for what to say to Evan.

“…how have you been all these years overseas, Evan? I hadn’t heard a single peep from.you whatsoever.”

If it weren’t for Gilbert, Danika would’ve forgotten he existed.

“Not much, really. It was my college studies at first, and then I got a job.I only decided to come back when Gilbert found me.”

If Danika had paid attention, she’d noticed that Evan wasn’t meeting her gaze when he said all this. But no, she didn’t.

Keep Watching Them

“Sounds fruitful.” Danika smiled.

Evan beamed.

“What about you? What’ve you been up to all these years?”

“Me?” Danika pointed at herself.

“I’m sure Gilbert filled you in with everything. I didn’t get up to much either.”

Evan disagreed, though.

Danika’s life was much more colorful than his, what with her marriage, divorce, then relationship with Eustace Quincey, in that exact order.

But he didn’t mention it.He wouldn’t pry if Danika didn’t want to talk about it.

Their conversation continued until twilight, then Evan went to the kitchen to make dinner.

Danika’s offer of help was swiftly turned down—she was even asked to make herself at home as if she was the guest.

Evan finished preparing dinner in half an hour, with two mains and two sides immediately placed on the table.

Danika gave him a thumbs up, in awe of his cooking skills.

The two were just about to eat when the doorbell rang.

Danika’s heart sank briefly.

It wasn’t Eustace, was it?

“I’ll get it.”

Evan went to open the door before Danika could stand up.To their surprise, it was a delivery guy.

“Ms.Danika Zellweger? Here’s your food delivery, miss.”

The man gave Evan the container of food, then turned to leave without questioning much.

Evan placed the food on the table and gazed at Danika inquisitively. She glanced at the restaurant from where the food was from, already guessing who might’ve ordered food delivery for her.

“Were you worried that my cooking wouldn’t be up to your standards or that I wouldn’t make enough?”

Evan huffed a laugh, surprised Danika would order more food.

Danika smiled, telling a white lie.

“I forgot to tell you, actually.I ordered this earlier today for dinner.”

“Really?” Evan cocked his head, not buying it one bit.

Danika nodded, avoiding his eyes.

“Why don’t you sit down first? I’ll put this in the fridge for breakfast tomorrow.”

She set the delivery in the fridge and then returned to the table.

Neither brought it up again as if it’d never happened.

In the meantime, a text message showed up on Eustace’s phone, informing him of his successful food delivery order. He wrote a thanks before turning back to the man beside him.

“Any word from the Quinceys?”

“No, sir,” Vincent answered.

“Keep watching them.We can’t have them try anything with Danika.Vincent nodded, knowing just how important she was to his boss.

“Just Zeke Quincey, sir? What about Yakov Quincey?”

Eustace hadn’t seemed to be bothered about the brothers one bit, though Vincent didn’t approve. It was all the more important right now to keep an eye out on all sides.

“He’s not gonna do anything for the time being.” Yakov was a smart man.

If he had no reason to take action, he wouldn’t, especially when watching Eustace struggle with Zeke was the wise move.

I Shouldn’t Have Assumed

Not seeing the need to worry further now that Vincent knew his boss had a plan in mind, he changed the topic.

“Well, sir. This is the info on the shares you wanted me to look up.Unfortunately, most of them are reluctant to sell.”

Quincey Group was still churning out dividends annually, so the shareholders wouldn’t sell their rights off that easily, even if Eustace were to offer a great price.

“As expected.” He didn’t mind.

Those shareholders would be scrambling to sell their shares once something happened to Quincey Group later.

“What about those projects?”

Quincey Group was a large company handled by an equally large family.

Eustace doubted all their projects were acquired by clean hands.

All he needed to do was do some digging for dirt to come up.

Vincent nodded and handed Eustace another sheaf of documents.

“Many issues turned up for two projects in particular.I’ve listed them out for you here, sir.”

“Thank you.You can leave it here.”

“Do you plan to use these to take down the other Quinceys, sir? Wasn’t your plan to take over as heir instead?”

Would there be a need to inherit the family if his boss planned to defeat them now? Eustace huffed a quiet laugh, eyeing his assistant.

“Do you think I’d be that careless?” Vincent blinked in surprise, then shook his head.

“No, sir. Apologies, I shouldn’t have assumed.”

He should’ve trusted Eustace’s judgment from the start.
