She simply gave up on calling and put her phone away. “Looks like it’s not just a family gathering. Let’s go.”
“Alright.” Eustace smiled and glanced mockingly at Evan, who was just getting out of his car. He knew it was strange that Gilbert suddenly interrupted Danika like that. Now that Evan had appeared, Eustace instantly guessed that it had to do with Evan.
When Evan saw that Eustace was around, he was bewildered. “Why are you here, Eustace?”
“Danika invited me over. Do you have a problem with that?” Eustace raised an eyebrow as if daring him.
Evan raised an eyebrow, looking at Danika, who was not far off. “Do you want him to tag along, Danika? This is a family gathering. Who is he to come?”
“He happened to help me solve a difficult problem today. I brought him here to show him my gratitude,” Danika said, her tone unpleasant.
She didn’t know if this was purely Gilbert’s idea or if Evan had something to do with it, but she disliked it.
She just wanted to eat with her two brothers, but they called Evan over. Did they want to upset her? She had confessed to him when she was younger, but that didn’t mean she had to continue liking him. Why did they stubbornly bring up the fact that she had confessed to him before?
Evan could sense that she was unhappy and pouted, saying nothing.
They walked into the villa, and Gilbert was surprised to see Eustace. He hadn’t invited him over.
“I brought him here,” Danika said. “I wanted to treat him to a meal, and you happened to call. So I brought him along.”
Gilbert forced out a smile. He’d grown up with her. He knew that she was throwing a tantrum.
A fool could guess why. It was his fault.
“It’s alright. We have other guests coming over.” When he said guests, he really meant outsiders. Danika frowned as if sensing the meaning in Gilbert’s words. “Are there more people?”
“You’ll know.” It wasn’t just other people. It was someone who would shock Danika very much.
Danika didn’t ask anymore. She had already decided that it was going to be a disappointing meal.
She volunteered to help in the kitchen. Eustace and Evan wanted to help, too, but Gilbert did not let them go. He put them in the living room because they were guests.
They sat far apart in the living room, wanting nothing to do with each other.
“Your men are dead,” Eustace said, sipping tea. He didn’t look at Evan, but Evan knew that those words were directed at him.
Evan did not give off much of a reaction, as if it was expected. “Okay.”
Death was an escape. The Quinceys would not let them go so easily if they continued living.
Eustace had used the opportunity to pin their deaths on the Watkins. Zeke wouldn’t suspect much.
“You’ve suffered great losses, haven’t you?” Eustace said. It sounded like he was mocking him, but it wasn’t his intention. It was a casual question.
Evan didn’t think so. He scoffed. “It is as you wish, isn’t it?”
锘?/p>
Eustace didn’t mind. It wasn’t so much his wishes as it was what they both deserved.
“Do you think Zeke will let you go just because you used the Watkins as a scapegoat?” Evan smiled. To him, it didn’t matter to Zeke who killed Xavier. It only mattered that Eustace could not live.
Zeke truly did not want to give the Quinceys to Eustace.
Eustace smiled lightly, not worried. “That’s none of my business. I only need to survive in his hands. You don’t have to worry about me.”
Evan scoffed. “Would I be worried if it didn’t concern Danika’s safety? You should understand the position that you’re in now. The closer you are to Danika, the more dangerous it is for her. You wouldn’t think the Quincey boy is any good, would you?”
He felt that if Eustace truly liked Danika, he would have to keep his distance from her. In fact, it was best if they cut off all forms of communication. It was all genuinely for Danika’s safety.
Eustace understood his reasoning. But he also knew that if he held himself back now, he would lose his chance with Danika and give Evan an opportunity to strike.
After a moment, he said, “I will protect her.”
He wouldn’t let Danika fall into danger. What if…
He gritted his teeth, not following that train of thought.
“That’s nice and all, but you’re relying on the Quinceys to survive right now. How are you going to protect her?” Evan felt that Eustace had no way to protect Danika, especially when faced with Zeke. He had no means of defense.
Eustace glared at him and said coldly, “I’m still slightly better than you. Can you protect her? You wouldn’t even dare to tell her who you are.” Although Eustace was in a precarious situation, it was only temporary. Once he inherited the Quinceys, the threats would be eliminated.
But Evan was a different story.
He had countless enemies. Not many knew of his true identity. If they did, he would have been overpowered by his enemies.
Evan gritted his teeth in hatred, but he had no way to defend himself. He knew how dangerous it was to be by his side.
However, he had already thought it out. If he could win Danika’s heart, he would wash his hands of his sins and stay in the country, building a new life for himself.
He felt no need to tell Eustace of this.
In the kitchen, Danika washed the ingredients while Gilbert chopped up the vegetables. He felt guilty when she said nothing. “I’m sorry, Danika. I wasn’t…”
“I know. You just want to matchmake Evan and me, don’t you?” Danika smiled, seeing through Gilbert’s heart.
He nodded. “Yes. I just think that he’s better suited for you.”
“Why? You’ve only contacted him for this short period. Why do you think he’s better for me?” Danika asked. She couldn’t understand why Gilbert would think this.
Gilbert was at a loss for words. He’d just rather it be anyone but Eustace. He would accept it if Danika fell in love with anyone else.
Danika quickly understood his silence. “You’re just biased against Eustace, aren’t you?”
“He’s not suitable for you. Have you forgotten how he treated you before?” Gilbert was agitated. He knew his words would upset her, but he wanted her to know how he felt.
Danika paused. She looked at him. “What if…I like him? What would you do?”
Zack’s Girlfriend
Everything went quiet.
Gilbert wasn’t expecting Danika to admit her feelings for Eustace.
After a while, he sighed.
“It’s your life.Although I don’t like Eustace, I won’t interfere.Supporting Evan is just my way of giving you another option.”
Hearing him say that, Danika felt that her reaction was over the top.
“I’m sorry, Gilbert.I wasn’t…”
“I’m not blaming you.Blame me for the shoddy planning that’s making you unhappy.”
He knew that Danika was not happy about Evan eating together with them.Danika said he was her brother, but they all knew that time had diluted their relationship.
Evan was no more than just a friend to her.She probably wouldn’t want him to join in on their family gathering. That was why she brought Eustace over. They didn’t continue the conversation.
A woman’s voice floated from the living room.Danika was bewildered, looking at Gilbert in disbelief.
“Why…why is there a woman in this house?”
“You’ll know when you see her.”
Gilbert didn’t explain much, merely sending her off to the living room.
Danika was curious to know, so she did not refuse. She went into the living room.
Soon, she saw the woman. She was dressed casually, and her long hair was let loose. She looked incredibly gentle.
However, Danika’s gaze landed on the person next to her.Zack stood next to her, and they were holding hands. They looked to be very much in love.
Something went off in Danika’s brain, making her unable to make sense of the situation. When he saw her, Zack waved.
“Danika, come over.I’ll introduce you.”
Danika walked over in a daze, and Zack introduced her.She was Janet Hale, his girlfriend. She looked like a Janet.
Demure, gentle, and quiet.Danika’s first impression of her wasn’t too bad.
“Nice to meet you,” Danika said, extending her arm.
Janet shook her hand.
“Hello.Zack talked about you, and I’m finally getting to see you for the first time. You’re prettier than he said you were.”
“Zack would never say I was pretty. In his eyes, you’re probably the prettiest person to him,” Danika teased.
They were polite.
After all, she was Zack’s girlfriend. If they married, they would be a family.
There was no reason they shouldn’t be friends.
Hence, Danika told Zack to help in the kitchen and leave Janet in the living room so that they could get to know each other.
Through their conversation, Danika learned that Janet was one of Zack’s employees.
