Chapter 377 – The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion

However, after listening to Rowena, she suddenly thought that James could have feelings for her. If she put in the effort, she might be able to make James fall in love with her.

Because of that, she chose to stay.

“So why aren’t you leaving?” James looked at her scornfully. She gritted her teeth. “Because I like you.”

James smiled coldly. He was no fool. If that were the case, Jolene would not have insisted on leaving before.

There had to be another reason. One that he did not know yet.

Victory Could Be Hers

“Can I stay?” Jolene looked at him anxiously.

James refused. ‘You chose to leave, so you should fuck off as far away as possible and never appear in my sight.”

“I…” Jolene stammered, at a loss for words.

If she could have figured out why he refused to let her go earlier, she wouldn’t have insisted on leaving.

What a pity it was that she had not analyzed anything before. She merely thought that her days, if spent there, would be dull and dreary.

Jolene bit her lip, deciding to try her luck. “Well, in that case, I’m going to leave now.”

She tugged on her suitcase, preparing to leave.

Seeing that she was actually going to leave him, James was stunned. He thought Jolene would beg him for another chance. He wasn’t expecting her to leave just like that.

Was this what she meant by liking him? It was very half-assed.

Jolene walked with her suitcase in tow, murmuring to herself. If James were near, he would have heard her counting to a hundred. She wanted to see how far along she’d get before James told her to stay.

“Seventy-seven, seventy-eight…”

“Stop right there!”

James’ voice sounded from behind. Jolene smirked. So, Rowena was right. She turned, pretending to be bewildered. “Is there something else?”

“Are you leaving just like that?” James asked.

“Of course. You’re not letting me stay. What else can I do?” she said.

James was incredibly frustrated. He felt that he was being manipulated, but he thought it was impossible. How could she manipulate him? He was clearly the one making all the decisions.

In the silence, Jolene’s heart thumped hard. However, her anxiety dissipated when she heard James say, “Get the fuck in the house!”

Jolene smiled. She said nothing, going into the villa with James.

She was back in this familiar place. But this time, she had a completely different outlook on things.

Perhaps this time, victory would be hers.

In the following days, Danika didn’t meet with Eustace even though he called every day. He would not stop calling even if she refused to pick up, as if to test the waters.

Danika didn’t know what to say. She hadn’t yet given the matter any careful consideration, which was why she neither picked up nor met him.

Eustace looked at his phone in Quincey Group. The familiar robotic voice was playing.

Danika had not picked up once more. He sighed, a little exasperated.

“Mr. Quincey, Luke has said that his new turf club will be launching soon. He has invited you to the launch.* Vincent walked in. He was transferred over to the company and was Eustace’s assistant once more.

Something in Eustace’s eyes flashed. “Have they finally come?’

He had waited for days. He thought that the people from that family would have moved ages ago. They were unexpectedly patient, waiting until now to strike.

“Mr. Quincey, they don’t bear good intentions. I’m afraid of the danger.” Vincent frowned. Ever since Eustace had come to Quincey Group, this was the first time Luke invited him to a gathering. It was unusual, no matter how one looked at it.

Eustace was not surprised. He smiled, saying, “It will always be dangerous. The question is for whom.’

The Quinceys had their plan to attack him. Likewise, Eustace had a plan to defeat them.

“Tell Evan to begin the plan. Tell him to consider the consequences if he fails,” Eustace said.

Sticking to the Plan

Vincent nodded. He had served Eustace for many years. He knew of his abilities well. If he dared to go to the launch, there wouldn’t be much to worry about.

After Vincent left the office, Eustace investigated the turf club that had just opened. He wanted to observe the geographical layout of the place so that he could figure out what they’d use to finish him off.

He figured it out very quickly, but he was speechless.

It was a cliff, again.

They wanted to make it look like he had lost his footing and fallen into the water.

They would be riding horses, after all, but horses had a rebellious streak. If they ran over the cliff, it would be pronounced an accident.

He could tell that they had done this very secretively. Eustace even suspected that this turf club was prepared specially for him. No one would choose a place like that for horses. A fool could tell that it was an accident-prone place.

If he didn’t prepare himself beforehand and figure out that they would hurt him, he might actually lose his life.

But now, it was hard to say who the victim would be.

Evan looked upset when he received Eustace’s message. “Does he honestly think that I’m his underling?”

He could be upset all he wanted, but Evan knew he had to do it.

At that thought, he called his henchmen and got them to keep an eye on Xavier so that they would find an opening to strike.

He hung up and left, using the excuse of meeting a client to meet with his henchmen.

It was the first time he launched an attack since returning to the country. He had to make sure that it was perfect. Even if the Quinceys could not trace it to him, Evan had decided to send his henchmen abroad and bring in a new group of men once this was over. That way, the Quinceys would never be able to trace it back to him.

After all, it was all within the country, and the Quinceys were not like regular people. He had to be extra cautious.

Xavier had no idea this would be the day of his death instead of Eustace’s as they had planned.

When Eustace reached the turf club, there were plenty of rich people coming to support Luke. When they saw Eustace, they formed a path for him to walk through. They chose to suck up to Luke, so they did not greet Eustace. No one liked people who sucked up to everyone.

“You’re here, Eustace. Choose a horse that you like. We’ll race each other.” Luke went forward and patted Eustace on the shoulder. Anyone might think that they were close.

Eustace looked at him and the doubtful glances around him. Realization dawned on him. Luke was pretending to be on friendly terms with him so that if something happened later on, it would seem like just an accident.

He found it all amusing. Humans were such pretentious creatures.

Luke clearly hated him, yet he refused to show it. What was the point of this?

“Alright.” Eustace nodded. Luke was targeting him. Of course he’d have to comply.

Luke sighed in relief when Eustace agreed. ‘Let’s go take a look.”

Afterward, he got someone to bring Eustace to the horses. He went to the restroom to call his father.

“He’s here, Dad,” Luke said.

“Good. Stick to the plan. Do not let him leave that turf club alive,” Xavier said.

Luke agreed. He had long hated Eustace. If it weren’t for his father’s inhibitions, Luke would have struck ages ago.

Now the time had finally come. He would not give Eustace the chance to escape.

I Thought You Were More Capable Than This

Eustace had already changed his clothes and selected his horse.

“Let’s go.” Luke trotted over on his ride, raising his eyebrows at Eustace.

Eustace smiled and got up the horse’s back. They went toward the racing track not far off.

The race began quickly. There were quite a number of people watching them, curious to know about their relationship with each other.

The media said that they were like fire and ice, but they didn’t seem too bad.

Eustace rode on his horse. Luke suddenly neared him and said in a not-so-soft voice, “Do you know what day it is, Eustace?”

Eustace said nothing. Luke continued, “It’s the day that you die.”

Luke then whipped his horse so that his horse would surpass Eustace’s. He rushed toward the mountains.

Eustace smiled lightly, not expressing too much emotion. He knew Luke was intentionally provoking him, but he went over anyway. How could they have the chance to kill him if he didn’t?

The people around them watched them disappear into the mountains.

They were surprised. “Why did they run to the mountains? Has something happened?”

“Everybody, relax. The mountains are also part of the race tracks. Although the conditions are worse, it’s very suitable for people who like to race,” the employees explained.

The people said nothing more. They dispersed, no longer paying attention. Luke didn’t go very fast, as if he were purposefully waiting for Eustace.
