“I take it you choose him, then.”
“I’m afraid I don’t understand you, Mr.Luke.I did plan to have dinner with Eustace after the trip to the station.I just never imagined him to come over so early.”
Danika acted innocent, neither wanting to have dinner with Luke nor piss him off.
Yet to Luke, that was a clear rejection, sufficient for him to note it in his black book.
With a smile, he nodded.
“Very well.Goodbye.”
Eustace then left with Danika in his car, leaving Luke to stare silently at the vehicle fading into the city streets.
He had seriously considered courting Danika and one day marrying her, so one day he’d not just gain more recognition with Zeke but also own everything the Zellwegers had. It looked like that dream just went up in smoke.
Well, if he couldn’t have it, no one else could.
His father had taken action against Eustace.
Might as well let him take care of Danika too.
Eustace and Danika were oblivious to the plan.
Even if they weren’t, they couldn’t do anything to prevent it.
All they could do was grit their teeth and persevere through whatever difficulties came their way.
I Don’t Mind
Silence enveloped the car for a moment before Danika said, “Thank you.You can drop me off now.”
“Aren’t you headed for the police station? I’ll drive you.” Eustace replied, not slowing down.
Danika shook her head.
“I can call a cab.”
She didn’t want to be involved with Luke, nor did she want Eustace to overthink just because she chose to leave with him.
Eustace still wasn’t slowing down.
“I know you don’t feel the same way I do right now.In fact, you might even hate me.But you don’t need to worry about me doing anything to you. All I’m doing is driving you to the station.”
“You misunderstand.I just don’t want to trouble you, that’s all.”
Danika didn’t hate Eustace; she just didn’t think him doing this for her right now was appropriate for their current relationship.
“I don’t mind.”
Now Danika didn’t know what to say.
She pursed her lips and left it at, “Alright then.”
If Eustace insisted, there was no point insisting otherwise.
It’d be silly to get into an argument over something so trivial.
Her phone suddenly rang.
“Hey Evan,” she greeted after picking up.
“Where are you? I’m at the hospital.”
He had obviously gone all the way just to see her.
Unfortunately, Danika had long left.
“Oh, I’ve already left.I’m on the way to the police station.They need me to make a statement.”
“I’ll come pick you up.”
Danika eyed Eustace in the driver’s seat and said, “No need.We’ll meet for dinner.You can put in the orders first.I’ll be right there.”
“Alright.Be careful, Danika.”
After hanging up, Eustace asked, “Are you close with Evan Clarke?”
“Decent, I guess,” Danika said simply.
They’d grown up together, after all, so there was still that childhood bond between them.
Decent? Eustace scrunched up his nose.
“You know, there are rumors he’s working in Zellweger Inc to get you to be his girlfriend-turn-wife.What do you think?”
He wanted to see how Danika would react, wanted to know what she thought about him.
If Danika didn’t like Evan, no way would that man succeed.
Still, Danika immediately picked up on it.
“I think he’s pretty brave.”
She couldn’t let Eustace get all the points now, could she? Eustace’s face instantly fell.
“So you’re interested in him?”
Danika shot him a look before saying, “That concerns you how? Evan is a fine, handsome man.Don’t I have the right to be interested?”
She used to like Evan.She even confessed to him, too.
Danika looked upon that memory with only amusement at herself.
Still, Evan must be different from every other man based on what she’d done.
“Is he more capable than me? I doubt he’s more good-looking.” Eustace huffed, feeling jealous.
“Can you stop that, Eustace? You’re not the only ‘capable’ man in the world, you know.”
Danika rolled her eyes.
This man was just as narcissistic as he was when they first met.
Eustace wasn’t embarrassed about it at all.
“I don’t care what anyone else thinks.What you think is all that matters to me.So do you think Evan is better than me?”

“Here we are, thank you for driving me here,” Danika said, ignoring Eustace’s question.
She wasn’t going to answer something so childish.
Eustace could only shake her head.
“Go ahead then.”
Danika got off the car and hurriedly entered the station as if worried Eustace might snatch her back.
The sight made Eustace scowl.
Was he that terrifying? Danika left the station half an hour later.She was about to hail a cab to go to the dinner date she had with Evan when she noticed Eustace was still by the street.
“what are you still doing here?”
Did he plan to have dinner with them? That…would only spell trouble.
“Don’t you have dinner plans with Evan Clarke? I’ll drive you.”
Eustace’s flat expression wasn’t helping Danika guess what he was thinking.She stared at him for a while to make sure he wasn’t bluffing before laughing.You’d willingly drive me over?”
“Yeah.” Eustace nodded.
“Don’t worry.I won’t be a bother.I’ll leave once I drop you off.”
“Why?”
Didn’t Eustace despise Evan? Why help her get to dinner with him, then? “No reason.I want you to be my girlfriend, and I’m not going to let you go there via cab.”
The safest thing to do was to drive Danika herself to keep her safe.Hearing Eustace say that threw Danika off.
“Eustace—“
“Get on.You don’t want to keep him waiting.”
God knows how painful it felt to say that, but he had no one to blame for it but himself.
Danika got into his car, knowing it was pointless to try and convince Eustace to change his mind once he set his mind to something.Their car ride remained silent until they reached the restaurant.
