“I believe they’re working together, sir.They should be launching their plans soon.Can’t really let Eustace become head of the family, can they?” the butler replied.
“Let’s give them a boost then.Better to eradicate the outsider soon.”
Now that Zeke had accomplished his plan, there was no reason to keep Eustace around anymore.
Things would only spiral out of his control if he did.
The butler nodded.
“Very well, sir.”
Danika went to work as usual at Bardoff Hospital, though this time, most of her colleagues had now changed their perception toward her.She was surprised to see McKenna walking hand in hand with Derrick, however. She hadn’t imagined those two would get together, especially now that McKenna knew just what kind of jackass Derrick was.
The couple was surprised to see Danika, though they shared different thoughts.
Derrick still regretted not winning Danika over, of course.His future would’ve been guaranteed otherwise.He didn’t let McKenna know of this, however, lest she made another scene.
McKenna on the other hand, was beaming like a lighthouse on a misty morning.
“Derrick and I are officially dating now, Dr.Zellweger.You’ll give us your blessing, won’t you?”
Do Me the Honors
As unbothered as Danika was, she still remained polite.
“Of course.You two suit each other very well.”
At least they wouldn’t break other people’s hearts now that they could break one another’s.
Danika couldn’t guess who would be the loser in this relationship, though.
Right now, Derrick seemed the most likely, yet Danika knew he wasn’t the kind to bear losses.
Who knows what he was planning already? “Let’s just forget about what happened before, Dr.Zellweger. We’ll remain as colleagues from now on.I hope you don’t mind,”
McKenna continued.
Danika nearly rolled her eyes.
“Rest assured, there has never been anything between Mr.Clearwater and me, nor will there ever be.”
It had all been in McKenna’s head from the start.
Derrick felt embarrassed though McKenna scrunched her eyebrows up, upset.
“I should hope so.I wouldn’t want my boyfriend to cheat on me with another woman.”
Danika smiled but said nothing, thinking, “One man’s trash, another man’s…gold-plated trash, I guess.”
After she left, McKenna spotted Derrick gazing longingly in her direction.She instantly cried, “What? Still miss her? Pity she doesn’t have eyes for you!”
“What are you talking about? I don’t miss her.”
Since he’d chosen to be with McKenna, he’d no longer try to win Danika over.
In truth, he knew Danika wasn’t fond of him anyway.
“You better not.I’m warning you: if you cheat on me in any way, I’ll make sure you never step foot in this hospital ever again.”
McKenna warned, still feeling suspicious about Derrick’s sincerity.
Derrick nodded, swearing he’d never cheat on her.
Only then did she let it go.
On the other hand, Danika did not give a single damn about those two.
Derrick was never important to her, so she didn’t need to pay him any mind.
She completed a couple more surgeries that day before receiving a phone call from the police station right after she clocked out of work.
The moment she stepped out of the hospital, ready to call a cab, a car came to a stop before her.She was surprised to see who it was.
“Mr.Luke.”
Luke Quincey went up to Danika, greeting her.
“I was wondering if you’d do me the honor of joining me for dinner, Miss Zellweger.”
He had deliberately dressed up properly to come out that night.
Right now, even Danika couldn’t deny how hot of a man he was.
All the Quinceys had good genes, after all.
“Apologies, but I have some errands that cannot be delayed.Let’s have dinner another time.”
When exactly that other time would be was left a mystery.
Danika didn’t have a good feeling about Luke Quincey, unlike Julian Quincey.
The kid was proud and obnoxious, sure, but Danika could tell he wasn’t mean, just young and still immature.
Luke was different.
He was smart and intelligent, oozing an intimidating aura that made it hard for most to get close to him.
When Danika’s words reached his ears, he frowned just the slightest.That was his first time asking a woman out for dinner, and thus his first time being rejected.
“I’m sincerely asking you this, Miss Zellweger.At least give me a chance?”
Luke asked with a smile still on his face.
The more Danika stared at his smile, the more unsettling it seemed.
What Does That Have to Do With You?
Danika would’ve agreed to dinner with Luke if it weren’t for her needing to go to the police station.She had just inherited the title of the family’s head, after all.
There was no reason not to keep the peace with the Quinceys.
“You misunderstand, Mr.Luke.I really do have an errand to run.The police need me to make a statement at the station about what happened last night.”
Sometimes it didn’t seem like there were any upsides to inheriting the title.

Now Danika was at a loss for what to do.She really, really didn’t want anything to do with Luke.
Just then, Eustace came by.
“Hey, Danika.Off work already? C’mon, let’s grab dinner.”
Danika was surprised to hear that, then quickly recovered upon realizing what Eustace was doing.
“Yeah.Okay.”
“Let’s go.”
Eustace ignored Luke entirely.He’d usually show him decent respect in front of Zeke, but they were nowhere near the man right now, so.
Danika was about to leave with Eustace when Luke grabbed her by the wrist.
“Didn’t you say you had to go to the station? You turned down my offer for dinner, but here you are accepting Eustace’s?”
“Of course she is.What are you to her?”
Eustace forcefully pried Luke’s grip off of Danika, then stood in front of her protectively.
Luke sneered, eyeing the two.
“How bold of you, Eustace Quincey.Less than a day after breaking up with that Watkins girl and you’re already trying to climb into Danika’s bed. Is she better for your cause now?”
“What does that have to do with you?” Eustace scoffed.
No use wasting his breath on someone from such a low level compared to him.
The only thing they shared was a last name.
