“Mr. Quincey, I am not interested in your relationship with Miss Watkins.” She didn’t want to know, afraid that she would feel worse. “Do you have anything else to say? If not, kindly leave. I’m tired.”
Eustace originally wanted to explain that he and Blake were only in a business relationship. However, Danika’s response forced him to retract his words.
“I came here for a reason,” Eustace said.
Danika looked up at him, waves of emotions hitting her. Was he only visiting her because he needed something from her?
“You know about my amnesia. I’ve seen doctors, and they said a blood clot in my brain is pressing on my nerves, causing me to lose my memory.” Eustace looked at Danika before he continued, “No doctor in Bardoff City is willing to perform this surgery, so I contacted a world-renowned neurosurgeon, and he recommended you to me.”
The neurosurgeon in question was actually Danika’s mentor. When he learned that Danika was also in Bardoff City, he referred Eustace to her for the surgery as he trusted his student’s abilities.
Having an inkling that the world-renowned neurosurgeon Eustace had contacted was her mentor, she wasn’t surprised.
“So, you’re here to ask me to perform the surgery for you?”
“Yes.” Eustace nodded.
“Hm, I guess you’ll only come looking for me when you need something,” she thought to herself. She had thought that Eustace felt guilty and had come with the sole purpose of apologizing to her. She knew she shouldn’t have kept her hopes up!
As if he knew she had misunderstood him, Eustace quickly explained, “The main reason I came was to see you. My surgery is just a side topic.”
Danika chuckled. Although she didn’t say anything, Eustace could tell she didn’t believe him.
“I have no issues performing surgery for you, Mr. Quincey, but are you really comfortable with that? Aren’t you afraid that I might do something during the surgery?”
Neurosurgery was extremely risky, especially for someone like Eustace, who required a craniotomy. Anything could easily go wrong.
Eustace wasn’t worried about this at all. “I trust you.”
Danika kept the smile on herself, thinking that while he trusted her, she did not trust him. However, since her mentor had referred his case to her, Danika couldn’t refuse him. “I can do it, but not right now.”
“No rush. Let’s wait until you recover.” The truth was that he had come to check on Danika. However, he knew she wouldn’t believe him, so he didn’t say more. Danika nodded in agreement. “You can go now. Come find me when I’m discharged from the hospital.”
“Okay.” Eustace nodded, and before he left, he took out a file of information from his bag and handed it to her. “These are the profiles of those mercenaries. They’re well-known internationally and are ruthless. They’ve never failed before. Their attempt on you failed this time, but I don’t think they’ll give up so easily.”
He didn’t care why the Glasses brought them over; he was certain it was shady.
However, he was worried about Danika, afraid she couldn’t handle it.
“I know some very capable men here if you need them-“
“No thanks,” Danika cut him off.
It wasn’t as if she was completely alone, with no one around. Why would she ask for Eustace’s help?
If word about it spread, people would even think that she was interested in Eustace. In the past, it didn’t matter. Things were different as he was in a relationship. The last thing she needed was to be labeled as a homewrecker.
The End of the Glass Family
With that, Eustace left. Since Danika had refused his help, he wouldn’t insist. Perhaps because his memories hadn’t recovered, his feelings for Danika weren’t particularly strong.
Danika spent the next few days recuperating and didn’t pay much attention to whatever was happening outside the hospital. She believed that Graham and James would be able to resolve everything. However, before the Glasses were dealt with, she ran into another problem.
When the doctor came to change the dressing of her bandage that day, Danika noticed that the person was not her attending physician, and she was surprised. “Where’s Dr. Forbes?”
“Dr. Forbes is performing surgery today. I’m his intern,” the person answered and began to change Danika’s dressing.
Although Danika was puzzled, she didn’t think too much about it. However, when the person took out the medicine and was about to apply it, she detected a strange scent.
Without hesitation, Danika immediately pushed the person away and asked, ‘Who are you? What do you want?”
He feigned puzzlement and stared at Danika in confusion. “What are you doing? Lie down, and I’ll change your dressing.”
“You’ll change my dressing? What kind of medicine is that?” Danika asked.
“It’s just some antiseptic medication. You’re overreacting now.” He laughed and was about to grab Danika.
At this point, Danika had already sensed that something was amiss. She would not allow the man to do as he pleased. Immediately, she called the security guards at the door.
“Get him,” Danika pointed at the doctor. No matter what, she couldn’t let him escape.
The doctor began to panic. Although he wanted to run, he knew he couldn’t under the current circumstances and could only hope that Danika hadn’t discovered anything.
Unfortunately for him, Danika wouldn’t let him get away with it. After the guards caught hold of the doctor, she walked over to the medicine and carefully studied it. Then, her face turned pale.
“Potassium cyanide? You tried to kill me,” she said.
Upon hearing that, the security guards were terrified. They were sent to protect Danika and weren’t allowed to let her get hurt. They guarded the door and prevented anyone from entering, but they never expected the attacker to be a doctor.
“Potassium cyanide? Don’t make baseless accusations,” the doctor refused to admit it.
Danika sneered and walked up to the doctor with the “medicine” in her hand. “Since you won’t admit it, let’s try it on you. After all, you said it was just an antiseptic medication. If that’s the case, you’ll be fine, right?”
With that, she flung the medicine at the doctor’s face. With a loud sound, he kneeled in front of Danika before the “medicine” came into contact with him.
“It’s my fault! I was wrong,” he begged for mercy, knowing better than anyone what the medicine was.
Danika sneered. “Take him to the police station and find out who’s behind him.”
In fact, there was no need to investigate. Danika knew that the person who would do such a thing was either the Glasses or Rowena. In any case, they were all the same.
The Glasses were in a bad situation now and probably desperate. However, their desperate attempts only provided Danika with more evidence to expose them. With the new evidence from the doctor who tried to poison her, Danika would be able to bring the culprits to justice.
However, Danika was still worried. The mercenaries still hadn’t been found, and she didn’t know what they were up to. Danika was worried that they might cause trouble as they had guns.
While she was worrying about that, Graham learned that someone had plotted against Danika. Although he had been informed that she was fine, he was still worried.
“We can’t delay this any longer. We must bring down the Glass family,” he said.
Why Can’t You Just Die?
Danika stayed in the hospital for about a week, during which the Glasses went bankrupt. It didn’t surprise her. After all, Graham and James had been preparing for so long. If they couldn’t handle the Glasses, they would have wasted all their time.
On the day she was supposed to leave the hospital, a patient was admitted and specifically asked for Danika. Although she was on leave, she still went to take a look.
“Alicia?” Danika was a little surprised when she saw the person lying on the hospital bed. She never thought she would see her again.
Although Alicia had sworn she would seek revenge the last time they met, Danika didn’t care since she didn’t think Alicia couldn’t do anything to her.
“I heard that you almost got killed?” Alicia asked. Perhaps because of her illness, her face was a little pale. Although it had been cured through surgery, her former health was still not restored, and she needed to take medicine all the time and avoid rigorous activities.
Danika frowned, ‘What do you want to say?”
“You are so lucky. Why can’t you just die?” Alicia looked at her with unabashed hatred. Danika chuckled. Before she could reply, Alicia continued, “You killed my brother, but you have no remorse. I guess the lives of ordinary people like us are as insignificant as ants in your eyes.”
“That was his own fault, and it has nothing to do with me.” Danika didn’t think she had done anything wrong. Although she didn’t expect Jonathan to commit suicide in prison, even if he did, it wouldn’t change the fact that he had assaulted her. She would have been killed if he hadn’t been caught. There was no way Danika would sacrifice her life for his sake.
Her response only made Alicia hate her more.
“In the end, my brother sacrificed his life for others. Why didn’t you go after the mastermind instead of my brother?”
“I wanted to find the mastermind, but your brother refused to tell me who it was. What could I do?”
If Jonathan had been willing to tell Danika who the mastermind was, Danika might have even pleaded for mercy for him, as she still admired him. However, Alicia didn’t know about it. Sneering at her, Danika continued,” Your brother didn’t reveal the mastermind because he hoped that the mastermind would look after you even in his death. But he was still too naive. After he died, no one in the hospital cared about you.”
Alicia was shocked when she heard that. “Impossible!” If no one cared about her, how were her hospital bills paid?
What’s the Point?
With that, Danika left. She didn’t care whether Alicia believed her or if she appreciated her. Alicia could easily find out the truth if she spent some time asking around at the hospital where she had her surgery done.
However, Danika couldn’t be bothered. It was the day of her discharge, and she didn’t want her mood to be affected because of Alicia.
When Evan came to pick her up, Danika didn’t know how to feel about it.
“Where is Gilbert? Why isn’t he here to pick me up?”
“Gilbert? You know he’s a workaholic,” Evan said with a chuckle as he led Danika out of the hospital.
If Gilbert had heard what Evan said, he would have been furious. A workaholic? It was Evan who didn’t want him to come. Evan had told him he would be a third wheel if he went.
Nonetheless, he didn’t really insist on going either, as he knew that he really had to create an opportunity for Evan. Otherwise, the man might not be able to win Danika over.
Meanwhile, Danika was oblivious to whatever arrangement they had agreed upon.
While Evan went to get the car, she waited at the hospital entrance.
Suddenly there was a cry from inside the hospital.
“Someone is about to jump!’
Danika instinctively turned and followed everyone’s gaze to see someone sitting on the hospital’s rooftop. Although it was quite far and Danika couldn’t see the person’s face, she could vaguely see their hairstyle, which looked familiar.
Suddenly, she thought of Alicia, who she had just met, as she had the same hairstyle.
Disregarding whether the person was Alicia or not, Danika quickly ran and took the elevator to the top floor. When Danika reached the rooftop, she saw Alicia sitting on the edge.
Her heart raced as she cried, “Alicia! What are you doing?”
