Filed to story: The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion
“Could you buy me a bottle of water?” Danika asked Evan. “I’m a little thirsty. Evan nodded and got up, understanding that she wanted to talk to Gilbert alone.
After Evan left, Danika turned to Gilbert and asked, “Why did you bring him back, Gilbert?”
Gilbert sat down beside her bed and asked, “What’s wrong? Are you upset to see him back?”
Without much emotion, Danika replied, “I have no reason to be happy or upset about it.”
Confused, Gilbert wondered if his good intentions were doing more harm than good. He asked, “I remember you used to like him when you were young. Dont you still like him?”
Danika answered, “That was a long time ago. How could you take that seriously?”
Aside from Zack and Gilbert, Danika had grown up with Evan. Since he was the only person who wasn’t her sibling, who else could she have liked? It certainly didn’t help that Evan was handsome and kind. However, she had matured since then, and her feelings for Evan had disappeared.
Gilbert felt a little frustrated as he thought Danika still had feelings for Evan.
“I brought him back to manage my company. He’s been doing really well abroad.”
“That better be the case,” Danika replied. “If it’s for any other reason, you better put a stop to it.”
She gave him a side-eye. Having grown up with him, she knew what he was up to.
Gilbert was a little flustered as she didn’t hold back from calling him out. He quickly answered, “Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”
When Danika remained silent, Gilbert couldn’t help putting in a good word for Evan.
“Evan told me that he regrets rejecting your confession back then. I guess that kid definitely likes you.” When she didn’t answer, Gilbert said, “Alright, I won’t say more.” He knew Danika didn’t want to hear about it.
Waving at her, he said, “I’ll head back to work. I just returned, and there’s still much to do.”
Although he stopped pestering Danika about Evan, he was still creating an opportunity for Evan to get closer to her.
Danika nodded and said, “Be careful. Who knows what those mercenaries will do before they leave.”
She didn’t know what the Glasses would do next. Since they had spent a large sum hiring the mercenaries, they were unlikely to stop attacking her.
“Okay, I have arranged for people to watch over you, but you still need to be careful,” Gilbert said before leaving the ward.
I’m Trying to Avoid That
After Gilbert left, Danika leaned against the bed and took out her phone, scrolling through the latest news. She checked her call log and saw that she had made an emergency call to Eustace, but he hadn’t answered and had only called her back about an hour later.
She continued thinking about what would have happened had Eustace answered her call.
At that time, she had just entered the mountains, so if someone had come to her rescue, she might not have had to suffer the two gunshots later on. But then again, he had no obligation to come to her aid. She blamed herself for setting him as her emergency contact, which almost cost her life.
She decided to change her emergency contact to Gilbert. She felt confident that he would come to her rescue no matter what. As for Eustace, she decided to keep him on the list of blocked contacts and have no further contact with him. Although he had no obligation to save her, Danika’s heart still hurt and felt uncomfortable.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door of the ward. Danika thought it was Evan returning and said, “Come in.”
It was Derrick who entered instead. Danika was hospitalized in Bardoff Hospital, and all the well- informed people in the hospital knew she was there. Derrick was one of them.
“Danika, are you okay? I heard about your accident this morning and rushed over immediately.” Derrick approached her and asked how she was doing.
Danika forced a smile and said, ‘I’m fine.”
Derrick pointed to the bandaged wound on her body and asked curiously,” How did you get hurt?”
“I fell,” Danika said.
Derrick thought to himself, “Even if you take me for a fool, at least come up with a better reason.” However, he didn’t say that out loud and instead said, “Oh, okay. Be more careful in the future.”
Danika didn’t have much to say to Derrick, and she felt she had already made things clear to him. She didn’t know why he was still here. The atmosphere became awkward, and Derrick could tell that Danika didn’t want to talk to him much. But he didn’t want to leave either, feeling he should do something.
Just then, Evan knocked on the door and came in. Seeing someone else in the room, he asked, “Who’s this?”
“A colleague,” Danika said.
“A friend,” Derrick said.
They both answered, but with entirely different answers. Evan smiled and didn’t pay it any mind, saying, “Why don’t you take a seat, Danika’s colleague? Thank you for coming to see Danika.”
Derrick didn’t like how Evan acted as if Derrick was a guest in Evan’s home.
“Danika, who is he?” Derrick asked.
“My brother,” Danika answered.
“You are not related by blood, right?”
“No,” Danika confirmed.
Derrick felt uneasy, wondering if Evan was her “boyfriend” instead. Although he didn’t know Evan, he could tell from his behavior and appearance that he was probably wealthy. Although it pained Derrick to admit it, Evan was even more handsome than him.
“Is there anything else? If there isn’t, why don’t you run along and do your own thing,” Danika said to him, not wanting to talk to him any longer.
Derrick nodded with a smile. “Okay, then I’ll go busy myself. Take care of your injury, and I’ll treat you to a meal when you recover.”
Danika smiled but didn’t agree. She didn’t want to have a meal with Derrick.
Soon, Derrick left, and Danika turned to Evan. “Do you still want to be my brother?”
“No, I’m trying to avoid that,” Evan said, a broad smile on his face.
I Have No Right to Blame You
The atmosphere in the room turned awkward again. Danika forced a laugh and pretended not to hear him.
“Didn’t I ask you to buy me water? Where is it?”
“Uh, don’t you have some water by your bed?’ Evan pointed to a flask of water on the bedside table. He was all but telling her that he knew she deliberately tried to get rid of him.
It made Danika more embarrassed. Gritting her teeth, Danika forced herself to say, “I wanted some bottled water.”
“Oh, is that so? I’m sorry I didn’t buy you any.” Evan apologized to her without exposing her lie.
Danika decided to move on from that topic. “I’m fine here. If you have something else to do, please go ahead and do it.”
“I just returned to my home country. What is there to do?” He didn’t have anything else planned, and he was also worried about Danika.
“Didn’t Gilbert bring you back to help him with work? Why don’t you help him out?” Danika knew there was no way Evan could weasel himself out of that.
With a helpless smile, Evan replied, “Sure, I’ll take a look later.”
Despite continuing with some small talk, Evan didn’t reveal his intentions. He had just returned to the country, and he and Danika were a little distant. Hence, he decided that there was no need to rush things.
After he left, Danika relaxed a bit. Perhaps it had been too long since they last met.
She wasn’t as relaxed in front of Evan as she was in front of Gilbert.
Putting him out of her mind, she began browsing the news on her phone to kill the boredom of recuperation. Suddenly, her eyes spotted an article that had garnered widespread attention and discussion.
It was about Eustace and Blake. The two had attended an event together, where Blake held Eustace’s arm. When a reporter asked what their status was, Blake said they were in a relationship. Eustace stood aside and did not refute, tacitly agreeing.
Although there had been rumors about the two being together before, the article confirmed them. Danika looked at the news, lost in thought.
Just then, Eustace knocked on the door to Danika’s hospital room. When he walked in, Danika hadn’t turned off her phone yet, and he spotted the news she was reading.
For some reason, he felt a little flustered.
“Anything I can help you with, Mr. Quincey?” Danika turned off her phone and looked at him coldly.
Eustace walked over and sat beside Danika’s bed, “Your injury.Js it alright?”
“What do you think, Mr. Quincey? If I had shot Miss Watkins three times instead, would you still think it’s no big deal?” Danika knew she had to be rational. She knew it was
Eustace’s choice of who he wanted to be with, but seeing them together still upset her. Hence, the way she spoke to him wasn’t very nice.
Perhaps Eustace felt guilty as he didn’t retort to her ridicule.
“I’m sorry I didn’t answer your call right away.”
“It’s fine, Mr. Quincey. We’re not that close anyway. It’s normal for you not to answer my call.” Danika was cold and distant, all but telling him that she was upset.
Hearing that, Eustace’s heart suddenly felt heavy. ‘I’m sorry.” His sudden apology surprised Danika. “Mr. Quincey, you don’t have to apologize. I meant what I said. You didn’t have to answer my call. Besides, I have no right to blame you,”
Danika said, feeling a sharp pang in her heart.
She couldn’t even understand how she and Eustace could come to where they were after they were so close to getting back together.
Perhaps they were really not meant to be. They divorced after they married and broke up after they got together. Just when they were about to reconcile, something like this happened.
It was fate.
No Thanks
Eustace didn’t know what exactly was going through Danika’s head. However, her words didn’t make him feel good.
