To the side, Randy was getting agitated. Kill another target? Was that how they were gonna placate them for their mistake? All he wanted to do was make sure Danika died right now!

What If I Don’t Want to?

“All we need to do now is send someone over to pull the plug,” Wayne suggested.

Danika wouldn’t have her guard up now that she was unconscious. The only issue was how to get close enough to her to land the killing blow.

Randy nodded. “I’m on it.”

The Glasses were not the only ones having a hard time sleeping for the night. Jolene had been equally disturbed upon hearing the news that Danika was still alive.

She had heard of Danika’s accident only after she was hospitalized and prayed to everything in existence that she’d just die. Such was the hatred Jolene had for her

“sister.”

It went without saying then that she wasn’t in any good mood now that Danika was out of the danger zone. Especially when James had rushed to the hospital first thing after hearing Danika was in there. Even a blind person could tell how much he cared for her.

Though Jolene should’ve known by now that James had no feelings for her, she still felt hurt that the man cared so much for Danika.

Just as tears were streaming down her face, the sound of footsteps came from the door. James was back.

“My.Js my sister alright?” Jolene asked, fearful of showing the hate she had for Danika.

James said nothing, only sitting down on the couch. His face was dark and gloomy.

Jolene’s heart skipped a beat. Why was James so upset? Did Danika die?

After some brief overthinking, she asked tentatively once again, “Is my sister alright, Mr. Windsor?”

The moment she asked the question, James glared at her and stormed over to her side. In a flash, he wrapped a hand around her neck, tightening his grip.

“You just can’t wait for something to happen to her, can you?” He hissed, eyes bloodshot. Jolene quivered frightfully in his grasp.

“I-I.no-” Jolene wheezed out, clawing at her neck as her air supply was slowly cut off.

Unfortunately for her, James didn’t care that she was about to pass out. He snarled,

“No? The Glasses were the ones behind this attack. You must’ve happily participated, too, no?”

Jolene was deeply offended. Neither her mother nor their family had informed her of their decision to do this. In fact, they barely got in touch with her these days.

What pained Jolene the most was that he addressed her as part of the Glasses.

Had he already grouped her in his mind with those bunch of people? But she…she was still a Zellweger.

Tears fell down her eyes and landed on James’ hand. As if regaining his senses, he let go of his grip around Jolene’s neck.

Jolene gasped for air as she crumpled onto the floor, traumatized from her close brush to death

Long Forgotten

While Jolene gave Rowena a call, Danika woke up in the hospital. She just had a dream in which she was running on an endless path. At the peak of her despair, a person fell from the sky—Eustace.

Seeing him, she was elated, thinking that Eustace still liked her. She believed that his memory loss and disinterest were fake. However, amid her joy, she opened her eyes to the sight of Evan, not Eustace. She was momentarily stunned but quickly remembered what had happened.

“What did you dream about? I saw you smiling earlier, but now you’re not. Are you disappointed to see me?” Evan joked.

Coming to her senses, Danika let out an awkward laugh. ‘Evan, stop teasing me.’

“Alright, fine. Are you hungry?” Evan asked.

Danika nodded. Since she hadn’t eaten for almost a day, she was hungry.

“You have to stay hungry a little longer. The doctor said you can’t eat yet and can only drink a little water.” He handed her the warm water in his hand.

Danika rolled her eyes at him. “If I’m not allowed to eat, why did you ask me? Are you trying to pull my leg?”

“I’m just trying to lighten your mood,” Evan said with a grin before helping her lean against the headboard.

Sitting up, Danika finally had the opportunity to ask, “Evan, why did you suddenly come back? You haven’t answered my question.”

They hadn’t seen each other for many years, and they hadn’t had much contact during those years. Danika had almost forgotten that he existed. “If I said you’re the reason I returned, would you believe me?” Evan looked at her, his eyes filled with emotions.

He believed that Danika could see the emotions in his eyes.

Danika did see it, but it only made her confused. ‘Evan, would you stop joking around?’

Evan let out a laugh to ease the tension. “I met Gilbert while I was abroad, and he invited me back to do work with him.”

Danika nodded, believing that this was the real reason.

“Where’s Gilbert?” Danika asked.

“I told him to go and rest. Since he worked hard to find you, I guessed you wouldn’t want him to stay here and wait for you to wake up.”

Danika didn’t deny that. Looking at Evan, she asked, ‘You must have come with him to find me, right? Aren’t you tired?”

“I’m alright,” Evan said. There was no way he could tell her that he had intentionally remained there just so that he could be the first person Danika saw when she woke up.

“I’m fine now. You can go and rest.” Danika felt bad for making him stay. Even though they used to be close, many years had passed, and many things had changed.

However, Evan didn’t leave. Looking at her, he recalled something from the past.

“Danika, do you remember what you said when you confessed to me all those years ago?”

Danika blushed slightly when she heard that. “Evan, that was years ago. I’ve long forgotten.”

Disappointed, Evan said, “But I haven’t. After all these years, I still remember it clearly.”

It put Danika in an awkward position, and she didn’t know what to say.

Grinning, Evan said, “Don’t think too much about it. I’m just trying to tell you that you were really cute back then. You’ve changed a bit now, and we’ve grown distant. Go to sleep. I’ll stay here with you.”

With that, Evan walked over to the nearby sofa and lay there, showing no intention of leaving.

Can’t You Feed Her?

The next day, Danika woke up, and when Evan saw her awake, he approached her and said, “The doctor said you can drink some chicken soup today.”

He then brought the chicken soup over and prepared to feed her with a spoon, saying,

“Come, have some. It’s not hot anymore.”

“I’ll do it myself,” Danika responded. Although he had always been kind to her, she felt a little uneasy and uncomfortable. Perhaps it was because they hadn’t seen each other in so many years that Danika wasn’t used to it.

“Can you move it?” Evan asked, referring to the wound on Danika’s shoulder, which was still bandaged. She probably shouldn’t move it.

Embarrassed, Danika replied, “I still have my other hand.”

Her right shoulder was injured, which rendered her right hand useless, but her left hand was fine, so she had no issue eating. Since she was so insistent, Evan didn’t say more. With a nod, he put the chicken soup on the table in front of her, and she used her left hand to eat.

Halfway through her meal, Gilbert knocked on the door and walked in.

“Gilbert!” Danika was happy to see him. After he went abroad, they were apart for the longest time ever.

Gilbert nodded at her. He was displeased when he noticed Danika eating the chicken soup with her left hand. Turning to Evan, he asked, “Can’t you feed Danika? Must you make her use her left hand?”

He thought Evan would care for Danika meticulously and was unhappy with his performance. Before Evan could explain, Gilbert picked up the spoon and began feeding Danika.

Danika smiled apologetically at Evan but didn’t refuse Gilbert’s assistance, leaving Evan feeling helpless.

“Danika, aren’t you biased?” Evan grumbled to himself.

After she had finished the chicken soup, Danika felt much better. She asked Gilbert,

‘Did you fight those mercenaries yesterday?’

“No, they probably saw us coming and left quietly,” Gilbert replied. He had decided not to chase after them as Danika’s safety was more important.

Danika wasn’t surprised to hear that. “Those mercenaries were hired by the Glasses.”

“I heard everything from Mr. Zellweger. You took too much of a risk this time. I’m going to send some people to protect you, and you’re not allowed to refuse,” Gilbert said, knowing Danika’s character and how she always relied on herself. She never took those who meant her harm seriously. However, there were always powerful people in the world, and nobody could defend themselves all the time, which was what happened to Danika this time.

Danika accepted his help as she had suffered the consequences. She understood why Gilbert was concerned about her.

“The Glasses spent a lot of money hiring mercenaries from abroad. I’m concerned that they have other motives. You should ask my father to be careful,” Danika said, fearing that their next target was Graham.

Gilbert nodded and then said, “Rest well and tend to your injuries. Mr.”

Don’t You Still Like Him?

Danika laughed when she heard that.

“Let’s just leave him blocked. We have no need to contact each other anyway.”

With that, she put away her phone, not intending to remove Eustace from the list of blocked contacts.

Danika was resentful because if Eustace had answered her call, she might have been rescued earlier, and she wouldn’t have been shot twice nor forced to jump off a cliff. Although she knew a river was below the cliff, she hadn’t known if she would survive. She wondered if Eustace would feel guilty if she had died there. She had no way of knowing the answer and didn’t care to know.
