“We’re all adults here, Max.You probably wouldn’t want me to take responsibility for this, would you?”

She was truly regretful. She wouldn’t have drunk so much that night if she had known.

Then, she would not have acted so impulsively.

“What if I want you to?”

Max looked at her.He knew he could turn his back on her and leave, but he couldn’t.

If he hadn’t come looking for her, she would honestly have pretended that nothing had happened between them that night.

But he couldn’t do it.

Jade was stunned as if she was not expecting him to say something like that. She was dazed for a while before smiling dryly, asking, ” Are you joking? How am I going to take responsibility for this?”

“By being my girlfriend,” Max said with no hesitation.

Jade frowned and refused him outright.

“I’m sorry. I’m not thinking about those things for the time being.”

Max was a good person, but they weren’t suitable for each other.

Dead or Alive

Jade’s words made Max incensed. He looked at her as if wanting to catch a glimpse of something different in her eyes.

Unfortunately, he found nothing.

“Max, I’m honestly not suited for you.Your feelings for me are probably just a fleeting crush. As long as we see each other less, your feelings will vanish.”

Jade felt upset seeing him like that.

Max was good to her and helped her out many times, but she couldn’t get together with him for that reason alone. It was unfair to both of them. Her words didn’t comfort Max in the slightest.

On the contrary, it made him even angrier.

“We’ve never even tried. How would you know that we wouldn’t work? Do you think all guys are jerks just because you’ve met one?”

Jade’s face grew stiff.

“I’m sorry.”

Max was furious but couldn’t unleash his anger with Jade acting that way.

“I hope you’ll think about it.We can’t live in the past forever. It’s time you moved on.”

With that, Max left.

Jade’s eyebrows furrowed when she watched him leave.

“Am I really…living in the past?”

She had always thought that she had already moved past it.She thought the hurt that Hayden had caused her no longer affected her.But now that Max said it, she too felt that she hadn’t really moved on.

She sighed before leaving the break room.

She dismissed the matter and placed all of her focus on work.

That was the only way she’d felt better.

Meanwhile, Danika was a frequent visitor at the cliff where Eustace’s car crashed.

She was always trying to find clues proving he was still alive.

But no matter how hard she tried, whether it was downstream or at the cliff, she couldn’t find a trace of Eustace.

He was missing.

No one knew if he was dead or alive.

Her phone rang, and she picked it up.

Alfred’s voice came through the receiver.

“Mortimer is still lying on his hospital bed.Why did you make me see him?”

“No reason.I just wanted to make sure,” Danika replied.

The Glasses had motives to hurt Eustace, but so did Mortimer.

That was why she had to be sure of it.

On the other end, Alfred frowned.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

Danika didn’t plan on telling Alfred anything. She couldn’t guarantee that he would lay low once he knew.

As if afraid of him pushing the matter, she asked, “Is everything alright with the company?”

“Yes.Everything is fine.”

Alfred didn’t press the matter.

Based on how urgently Danika went back to Parrington and then asked him to check on Mortimer in the hospital, he could guess that something had happened to Eustace.

But what could it be? Alfred had no idea, and he found no interest in it.He thought that life was going pretty well.

Although it didn’t compare to being the head of Quincey Group, an ordinary life filled with honest work was pretty enjoyable.

“Help me keep an eye on the Glasses.See if there’s any suspicious activity on their end.”

Finally, Danika placed her focus on the Glasses.

They were the most suspicious of all.

“Alright.” The call ended, and Danika began considering her next moves.

Was she to stay and continue looking for him? But she still had to work in Zellweger Inc and take revenge on Eustace’s behalf.

There were many things to deal with in Jeneration Group, too.

She felt frustrated at the thought of all these things.

Of course, what troubled her the most was that Eustace was absolutely nowhere to be found.

Are You Giving up on Eustace Too?

“You should go back to Bardoff City.”

Paul’s voice sounded behind Danika, and she turned back to look at him, surprised.

“There’s no point staying here,” he said, making Danika frown.

She looked at him.

“This is my business.”

She didn’t think they were close enough for her to heed his suggestions.

“Idiot,” Paul said.

“Eustace’s been targeted for murder. It’s obvious that he’s wronged someone and that someone is not from Parrington.”

These past two days, he had gone over Parrington with a fine- toothed comb. It was definitely not someone from Parrington.

The only other possibility was someone from Bardoff City.

“I don’t know whose anger he invoked in Bardoff City. But you should know.I want you to investigate things clearly when you’re back,” Paul said.

Danika was about to speak, but he continued.

“There’s no sign of Eustace here. That means he might not be dead.He might have been taken away.If you find them, you might be able to rescue him.”

It was not impossible.

What if their motives all along were not to kill but to kidnap? It would explain why they could not find Eustace.Danika frowned.

After careful consideration, she thought that it was a likely possibility. She looked at Paul with a mixture of confusion. She was a little surprised.

“Why are you helping me?”

“Helping you?”

It was as if Paul had heard a joke.
