Downhill
“For me? You sure it’s not for yourself?” Alfred sneered.
“You claim to do this for my benefit, but really, you’re just upset because you won nothing out of this pointless struggle.” He wasn’t an idiot.
Years of living with Mortimer Quincey had let him see the true ugliness the man possessed.
Even if Eustace really did die, the Quincey Group would never belong to Alfred.
Not until a century later when Mortimer died, at least.
Mortimer’s face immediately fell.
“What the hell do you mean?”
“Oh, nothing at all, just that I hope you don’t use me as an excuse for every power struggle you have in the future.”Alfred rolled his eyes. I’m not interested in the Quincey Group anymore.”
“Not interested?” Mortimer stared at him in disbelief.
“Yeah.I’d rather spend the time trying to steal it from Eustace on managing my own business. If Eustace Quincey can have his Quincey Group, why can’t I have mine?”
Alfred was sure he was just as capable as Eustace.
Mortimer gaped in shock, then, upon realizing Alfred wasn’t joking around, demanded, “Are you serious about this?”
Alfred nodded.
“You want to start a business empire like the Quincey Group from scratch, and with what, huh? What do you have in hand to even try? ” Mortimer wasn’t trying to burst his bubble. He just thought his son wasn’t being realistic.
Alfred was unperturbed by Mortimer’s questioning.
“That’s something you don’t need to worry about.”
“Wake up, Alfred Quincey! You could never accomplish this!”Mortimer yelled.
“I am wide awake. That’s why I’m not interested in stealing what belongs to someone else.”
Neither their company nor their women.
Mortimer raised his hand to smack his son when Alfred caught his wrist in a vice grip.
“You’re not fit to try and ‘educate’ me yet.”
“Not fit? I am your father! I raised you since you were a baby.I gave you more love than I ever gave Eustace!”
Mortimer roared, pissed.
Alfred remained unmoved.
“What love? When did you ever love me? You don’t think you were a good father just because you abandoned your family to come and be with my mother, do you? You were a terrible parent and husband, always blaming her for leaving your own family when you were the one who wasn’t responsible enough to deal with your own mistakes.”
Since Alfred could remember, Mortimer had never been a good father to him nor shown him much love.
All he remembered was that the man often got into fights with his mother.
Each time, her mother lost, growing speechless whenever Mortimer blamed his leaving his first marriage and his family inheritance on her.
Alfred’s mother had left her husband and children too, but she never raised that in their arguments.
Maybe she thought Mortimer was the greater victim between the two, but Alfred had never felt the same.
Heck, he could even see why Eustace despised Mortimer Quincey.
Still, that didn’t mean Alfred would ever side with Eustace.
Mortimer was left glaring speechlessly at his son’s words. He never expected his life to come to this.
Neither the son he abandoned nor the son he chose wanted him.
In fact, both despised him to the core.He huffed a weak laugh, feeling like he had played himself the fool.
“One mistake, and everything just goes downhill,” he sighed to himself, then left.

Danika made it back to Zellweger Castle just in time for dinner.
Graham had long reached home, sitting in the living room with Rowena and Jolene.
They were chatting and laughing when Danika went up to them.
“Hey, Dad.” Danika greeted Graham.
The man looked at her warmly.
“You’re back.Let’s have dinner then.”
He had Danika sit by his side, and just like that, Jolene was instantly out of the picture.
The young woman fumed silently.
How could her father be so biased? They were both equally his daughters.Still, she kept her unhappiness to herself.
‘ Looks like this trip was worth it, Dad.You seem like you’ve bonded nicely with Danika.”
After everything that had happened, Jolene knew all she could do now was to be patient.
Graham agreed. He did grow closer to Danika during the course of the trip.
Meanwhile, Danika shot Jolene a curious look. Her half-sister seemed to have learned her lesson.
The family sat at the dining table, their food swiftly served.Graham cleared his throat.
“Danika, what do you think about coming to work at the company? The training could do you some good.”
He had just come up with the idea.
After all, it was best Zellweger Inc got used to Danika before he passed the mantle on.
Graham could also make sure Danika was safe while under his care.
Danika frowned at the suggestion. She wasn’t even interested in managing her own company, so there was no way she’d be interested in Zellweger Inc.
“I know you have no inclination toward it, but the business will be in your name one day. It’s better to have you familiar with the world now, no?”
Graham continued, not bothering to hide the truth from Rowena or Jolene.Yes, the business would be given to Danika and only to her.
Danika was about to refuse when her father added, “I’m not asking you to stay at the office every weekday.Just stick around for the basics.Once you have the hang of things, I won’t stop you if you wanna explore other avenues.”
Graham would deal with whatever came next when it happened.
For now, he’d focus on letting Danika familiarize herself with the business. She just might grow an interest in the business over time.
“Alright.”
Danika relented in the end.It wouldn’t be right to reject her father after he had just helped her.
Plus, she’d never hear the end of it if she declined the offer. It wasn’t like she’d stay at Zellweger Inc for long anyway.
Graham beamed.
“Great! I’ll have them arrange something for you Nn “If I’m learning the ropes, I might as well start from the bottom,”
Danika cut him off.
“No one will respect me if you put me in a high position from the start.”
Graham stared at her in surprise.
“You…really want to start from the bottom?”
“Mhm.”
“Very well then!”‘ Graham grinned happily.
“Only my daughter would be so diligent!”
That was definitely the best step.
Having the company employees see her climb her way up through hard work and dedication would ensure their support when she took over one day.
Meanwhile, Danika didn’t have such plans.
To her, learning from the bottom up was best to hammer in the basics.
It would help her manage her own business too.She had to prepare for the worst somehow, even if Jeneration Group was running swimmingly with Alfred and Jade at the wheel.
