She immediately got changed and headed to the hospital. She had to see Larry in person to gauge his condition and ease her worries.
After a thorough check-up, Danika confirmed that Larry wasn’t in immediate danger.
After informing the Cruzes about his optimistic condition, they all expressed their gratitude toward her.
“Dr.Zellweger, my parents would like to treat you to lunch. They are very grateful to you,”
Natalia told Danika as they left the hospital room.
Danika glanced at her and politely declined, ”There’s no need. This is what I should do.”
“But…”
Natalia was still somewhat unwilling to relent. She felt that Danika had helped them a lot, but they had nothing to repay her with.
As if knowing what she was thinking, Danika smiled and said, “Don’t feel like you owe this to me.You guys have paid for the surgery, after all.”
Her surgery fee was expensive, especially since she came from Parrington to Bardoff City to do it.
“I know you don’t care about money, Dr.Zellweger.”
Although Natalia didn’t spend much time with Danika, she was sure of it.
If Danika really liked money that much, she could have just married Eustace instead of going through all this trouble.
Danika smiled but didn’t nod at that comment.
No one could say they didn’t care about money; it was just that everyone had a different perspective on how important money was to them.
After rejecting the hospitality of Natalia’s family once more, Danika was ready to leave the hospital.
Since she’d already instructed Natalia’s family on what to do, she didn’t have to worry about Larry’s recovery anymore.
The doctors in Bardoff City were experts in that aspect.
Derrick seemed to have been waiting for her as she walked out of the hospital doors.
He went over to her as soon as she appeared.
“Danika, do you have any plans for today? Let me treat you to a meal.”
At this point, Derrick had changed out of his white coat and was wearing a black suit, looking quite sharp.
Danika, however, was truly uninterested in him.
“I’m sorry, I’m busy today too.I appreciate your offer, Derrick, but we don’t need to have a meal together.”
Take the Hint
She thought she had made herself very clear the previous day.
Derrick was smart, so there was no way he couldn’t take the hint.
To Danika’s surprise, he was totally oblivious and approached her again.
“Danika, we graduated from the same university. There’s no need to push me away like this, right?”
Derrick desperately tried to establish a closer connection with her. However, it was obviously not very successful, as Danika was repulsed by his words.
“Although we are fellow alumni, that doesn’t mean we’re close.I thought my attitude toward you had made things very clear, but now it seems you didn’t understand what I meant.Well then, let me make it crystal clear now.”
Danika looked at him with a cold expression.
“I’m not interested in you, Derrick, whether as friends or in any other kind of relationship. So, can you please step aside?”
She didn’t want to say such harsh words, but Derrick just didn’t get it.If she didn’t make it clear, he might keep bothering her.
Derrick’s face was a kaleidoscope of colors upon hearing Danika’s merciless rebuke.
“Danika! Aren’t you being too harsh? As a fellow university alum, I invited you for a meal out of kindness. Not only did you not appreciate my good intentions, but you also did it with such a repulsive attitude.I really don’t understand how someone like you can graduate from Parrington Medical University!”
His voice was quite loud, so the people passing by stopped to look at them.Danika looked at Derrick and felt that he was wearisome.
“Is that all? If you’re done, I’ll be on my way.”
She wasn’t interested in him, nor did she mean to teach him a lesson.
Danika didn’t mind the things he said during his outburst; she wasn’t so petty.
With that, she left the hospital, leaving Derrick standing awkwardly at the door.
At that moment, he felt like everyone’s eyes were on him, sneering at him.
Yesterday, he boasted to his colleagues that Danika was interested in him, but today he was proven wrong publicly. He could guess what those people thought of him right then. He’d been given lots of recognition and praise since he was young; he couldn’t swallow such a humiliating rejection. He snorted coldly and left the hospital, determined to find a way to teach Danika a lesson.
“So what if you have a renowned professor as your mentor? What does that matter? He’s too far away to be able to help you in any way.You don’t hold a candle to me in Clusia!”
Derrick thought furiously. He had a lot of thoughts in his mind and was determined to not let the matter slide until he got revenge for his humiliation.
Danika didn’t even think about Derrick anymore as soon as she left.
Instead, she took a taxi to a shopping mall near Zellweger Inc.
She sat in a caf茅 on the eighteenth floor of the mall with a perfect view of the Zellweger Inc building outside the window. She gazed at the building, lost in thought.
“Jo, why did your dad freeze your card? Did you have a fight with him?”
Came the voice of a young woman nearby.
Jolene was angry when she heard that and complained, “It’s all because of that cheap woman named Danika Zellweger. My dad said I can’t compare to her, so we argued a bit, and then he froze my card.If it weren’t for her mom giving her some pocket money, Jolene really didn’t know how to get by.
“Danika?”
The others weren’t very familiar with the name.
“Is she the one Christopher brought back from the small town before?”
“That’s her.” Jolene nodded.
“I heard that because of her, Mr.Spade was hospitalized. It must be because he wouldn’t acknowledge her, so Christopher argued with him, which led to the old man’s hospitalization.”
“I don’t know what Christopher was thinking. How could he argue with his grandfather over a woman from a small town like that?”
I’ll Remember This
Jolene continued to sip on her coffee while criticizing Danika, speaking contemptuously of her.
Little did she know that Danika was in the caf茅 and could hear her conversation with her friend.
Danika didn’t know the woman and didn’t understand why she had such animosity toward her. However, she was no pushover, and if someone spoke about her so degradingly, she felt like she had to step in and do something. She couldn’t just lay low and allow others to trample all over her.She got up, walked over to the girl named Jo, and patted her on the shoulder.
Jolene turned around and saw Danika, who was smiling at her.She thought Danika looked familiar but couldn’t quite place where she’d seen her before.
“Who are you? Why are you touching me? Are you crazy?” Jolene fired away with annoyance.
Danika remained smiling and wasn’t angry at her audacity.
“It’s me.I’m Danika, the cheap woman you happily criticized a moment ago.”
The air seemed to freeze when Danika announced who she was, and Jolene couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She remembered seeing a photo of Danika before, and although she was attractive, she wasn’t exactly stunning. But the Danika in front of her was something else entirely. She was unable to react for some time.
After a while, Jolene’s friend was the first to say something.
“You’re Danika? You made Jo’s father scold her.I thought you were innocent, but now that I see you…you look like a cheap gold digger.Jo’s criticisms were justified, then.”
Danika laughed at how ridiculously shameless they were. She sneered, “What a joke! Your father scolded you because of me? I’m not the real reason; it’s all because you’re incompetent.I was just a scapegoat.”
Parents tended to be like that. They liked to praise others to belittle their own children.
“How dare you say I’m incompetent! Do you even know who I am? ” Jolene was angry.
Even her father had never criticized her as such.
How could this cheap woman say such things about her? Danika shrugged indifferently and sneered, “I have no idea who you are, but does that have anything to do with your incompetence and lack of education as well as manners?”
“You!”
Jolene was so angry that she didn’t know how to refute Danika and could only glare at her as if she wanted to hit her.
“Jo is the heiress of the Zellweger family. How dare you offend her? Your days are numbered!”
Jolene’s friend said angrily as she stood beside Jolene, comforting her.Danika was stunned to hear that. She didn’t expect the woman who was badmouthing her to be the Zellwegers’ daughter.
It was quite a coincidence, but a bad one.
Seeing that Danika didn’t respond, Jolene thought she was scared and immediately became even more smug.
“So you’re scared now, huh? Let me tell you, my dad is the CEO of Zellweger Inc, which owns this building you’re standing on.Everything here belongs to my family.Don’t think we’re alike just because we have the same surname.Let me tell you, we’re worlds apart.”
