River asked, “Could it be contaminated? He doesn’t strike me as a careless person!”

Axel and Tyler exchanged glances after hearing their argument.

They soon sighed and chose not to get involved.

Noah still wanted to argue, but Neil stopped him. “Alright, it’s just an amulet. I know Benjamin. He’s a good person,” Neil reassured them.

Neil realized that things could have escalated if he hadn’t intervened.

Noah and River sulked all the way back to Bayview Villa.

As soon as Noah got out of the car, he left with Reuben.

Neil carried Liora and, with Axel and Tyler, joined River in entering the house.

After setting down Liora, Neil said, “Don’t be upset anymore, River, I have to return to Xander Residence.”

River nodded and said, “Okay.”

As Neil left, River checked on Liora, who was sitting on the sofa with a pale face.

She approached, placed Liora on her lap, and asked, “Lia, can you tell me what’s bothering you today?”

Liora stared blankly ahead, seemingly unable to hear River.

Tyler thought for a moment and said, “Mommy, is it related to what the old man said?”

River couldn’t recall. “What did he say?”

“He mentioned that Lia’s health is delicate,” Axel explained.

River frowned as she wasn’t an expert in this area. She then remembered Eira.

“Ty, please go get Eira,” she requested.

Tyler got up and walked to the kitchen, returning with Eira shortly.

Noticing Liora’s unusual behavior, Eira sat down and asked, “What’s wrong with Lia, River?”

River explained Benjamin’s comments from their visit to the graveyard earlier in the day.

Eira responded with a serious expression. I’m not sure if you believe in mysticism, River. I used to be curious about it, but I’m not particularly skilled in that field. However, I do know a bit. Children shouldn’t visit graveyards. Liora is a girl, which might make her more sensitive. Graveyards have many unknown types of energy, and Lia might be scared.”

Eira gently touched Liora’s forehead and waved her hand in front of her. “Lia?”

Liora remained unresponsive, lost in her own thoughts.

Eira sighed. “Let her rest, and well check on her later.”

River nodded and placed Liora on the sofa, gently patting her back until she fell into a deep sleep.

When it was time for dinner, River tried to wake Liora. “Lia, it’s dinner time.”

Liora turned over and shouted in alarm.

River was taken aback and stared at her in surprise. “Lia, why are you shouting?”

Liora continued to mumble in an unknown language, not responding to her.

Eira rushed out of the kitchen, worried by the commotion.

Feeling Liora’s forehead, Eira furrowed her brow. “Lia has a fever!”

“She has a fever?!” River exclaimed, She gently touched Liora’s face and asked Tyler to fetch the infrared thermometer for a more accurate reading.

Liora’s temperature registered at 39°C.

River lifted Liora and urgently instructed. “Eira, get the car. We need to go to the hospital.”

“The hospital?” Kenny’s voice interrupted. “On Mardi Gras? Who’s unwell?”

River glanced at Kenny with concern. “Liora has a fever, and I’m taking her to the hospital.”

“Oh, no!” Kenny rushed downstairs and slipped on the stairs but quickly recovered. Ignoring the pain, he picked up Liora. “Pass me the child, quickly, Eira, get the car!”

Eira nodded. “Of course!”

Upon arriving at the hospital, Liora continued to speak incoherently in her sleep, leaving River baffled.

She consulted the doctor, who recommended a blood test after examining Liora.

Half an hour later, River handed the test results to the doctor.

After a brief glance, the doctor frowned. ‘Everything appears normal, and there’s no sign of infection.”

River was bewildered, “So, what’s the issue?”

The doctor explained, “This is an extremely rare condition. I recommend administering an injection to reduce her fever and closely monitoring her.”

River agreed and took Liora to receive an intravenous infusion.

In the emergency room.

River anxiously watched over Liora as she received treatment.

Kenny handed her a bottle of water. “Take a break, G. I believe her fever will subside soon.”

Gratefully, River accepted the water. “Thank you for being here with me tonight.”

Kenny took a sip of water and sat beside her. “Don’t mention it. I’m here for the child.”

River remained silent but kept a worried eye on Liora. She periodically checked Liora’s temperature during the fluid transfusion, but it remained at 38°C.

After the intravenous fluid was administered, River consulted the doctor again.

The doctor advised, “Monitor her for the rest of the night and return tomorrow afternoon for another infusion if the fever persists. Do you have medication at home?”

“Yes. Every four hours, right?” River clarified.

The doctor nodded. “Yes, go home and monitor for now.”

Once back home, River used a damp cloth to sponge Liora’s forehead. She stayed up through the night, administering the medication every four hours.

The following morning. Eira and Kenny came to check on Liora.

Kenny touched her forehead and frowned. “The fever hasn’t subsided yet…”

Eira sighed and said, “River, I’ll make breakfast for everyone.

River massaged her temples and agreed. “Sure. Thank you.”

“No problem,” Eira replied before leaving.

Kenny looked at River and said, “G, go freshen up and grab a bite. I’ll stay with Lia.”

River nodded. “Alright. Let me know if anything happens.”

“Don’t worry.”

While washing up, River mulled over the doctor’s words, ‘Everything looks normal, and there is no infection. If that’s the case, what’s causing this?”

After washing up, River went downstairs for breakfast and roused Tyler and Axel along the way.

Seeing his tired mother, Axel asked at the dining table, “Is Lia still unwell, Mommy?”

River said, “Yes. Axel, remember to take your medicine. Il take care of Lia, alright?”

Axel nodded. “Okay, Mommy. Liora is the priority now.”

Tyler took a sip of milk. “Mommy, will you take her to the hospital again if she doesn’t get better?”

River nodded. “I’ll take Lia to the hospital again if her fever doesn’t go down by this afternoon.”

River grew anxious and asked Kenny to take Liora to the hospital. It was 1:00 p.m., and Liora’s fever was still high, reaching 40°C.

Eira suggested, “I’ll go with you, River. It’s better to have more help.”

River looked at the kids. “I can’t leave Ty and Axel alone at home.”

Eira said, “Neil is on his way.”

“Did you tell him?” River asked.

Eira confirmed, “Yes, I told him about Lia’s condition.”

“Alright. Kenny, you drive.” River handed Kenny the car key.

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the hospital. The doctor prescribed medicine and intravenous fluids for Liora. River requested a room for her.

After Liora was settled, the three of them waited quietly.

Eira said, “River, take a nap on the sofa. You don’t look well.”

River shook her head. She was about to speak when Liora suddenly opened her eyes.

River was surprised and approached her, “Lia?”

Liora blinked and looked at River. “Mommy, someone’s talking…”

“Talking? Is it Eira?” River frowned and glanced at Kenny and Eira.

Liora shook her head. “No, it’s an old woman…”

“Old woman? Where is she? Kenny felt uneasy.

Liora pointed to the door behind Kenny.

River, Kenny, and Eira turned to look, but there was nothing there. River was worried that Liora’s fever might be causing delirium.

“Lia, don’t scare me. There’s no old woman there,” River reassured Liora while gently caressing her head.

Liora insisted, “The old woman has her hair in a low ponytail, and she’s talking to me.”

River felt a chill run down her spine and was at a loss for words.

Eira suggested, “River, why don’t we consult a seer? In my hometown, they do it when a child has an unexplained fever.”

River hesitated. “Fever is a physical issue, Eira. I don’t know any seer.”
